Just head that Prince Charles has been to visit him in hospital due to ‘exceptional circumstances’. He’s never visited him in hospital before and apparently left looking emotional. It doesn’t look good does it? I wonder how this will play out given the pandemic?

So he’s no longer there as a precaution unfortunately. It could be a urine infection, but again that can be easily managed at home usually just with oral antibiotics. It won’t be flu as there isn’t any this year. It’s hard to tell how serious this is really. At least he won’t have to worry about picking anything up while he’s there. I hope the press give the Family some privacy if it is serious.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/02/2021 15:46

Well, I doubt it's Covid or they may well have said so in a "we're all in this together" sort of way

Either way it's a sad fact that the condition of the very aged can change rapidly, so how things will turn out is anyone's guess

ImAncient · 23/02/2021 15:47

I have a family member in his 50s who gets repeated infections of prostatisis (?) & is usually in hospital for a few days for intravenous antibiotics. Could be something similar. Hope he isn’t too uncomfortable or in too much pain.

on the non covid areas I should add

PretendSpeedGun · 23/02/2021 15:59

I would guess it is a UTI they were struggling to get under control with oral antibiotics at home and so they are using IV antibiotics in hospital.

GoLightlyontheEarth · 23/02/2021 16:07

@PretendSpeedGun

William look very uneasy when asked that question - he immediately touched his face and adjusted his mask when he was asked the question and as he answered. Increased hand-face touching is a sign of deception. I am not suggesting he was lying but was caught off guard and could not give an honest response and had to be very careful about what he could say.

I imagine the staff at the hospital were briefed not to ask about Philip but this question came from a photographer who is not going to be as compliant.

He was relaxed during the rest of the visit but during that one moment he was clearly uneasy.

I thought his gesture in pulling up his mask was very revealing. It was an unconscious desire to hide. He was also blinking rapidly. Very uncomfortable and reminded me of him fiddling with his scarf on the steps of the church one Xmas. Self soothing gestures .
the80sweregreat · 23/02/2021 16:09

William is very wary of the press anyway.
I thought he looked much thinner too.
I suppose they don't want to say the wrong things.

wewillmeetagain · 23/02/2021 16:32

An infection can mean literally anything, in was as a precaution last week.

Thanks for the explanation - everyday's a school day. Hope the old fella I isn't too uncomfortable Smile

SilverBirchWithout · 23/02/2021 17:37

It’s probably a UTI associated with the bladder issues he seems to have regularly - I guess as a result of the previous prostate (?removal) concerns. It’s not uncommon to require either a long term catheter or an active manual urination device after prostate removal - and these activities obviously often lead to UTIs.

An infection could also be pneumonia - not uncommon in the very elderly - also known as ‘the old man’s friend’.

Personally I think it’s more likely to be the former given his medical history, and the reluctance to provide more information about his medical conditions. Obviously UTIs can be a cause of concern for someone so elderly, and being prone in bed for an extended period of time could lead to pneumonia developing as well.

Although he has had his Covid vaccine it only provides a certain level of security in someone of his age, there is also a very slim chance he has been infected whilst in hospital. This obviously would be a major news story and would be suppressed because of the serious ramifications in public trust of the vaccine - although no one has promised 100% immunity with the vaccine, a high-profile case would be a nightmare in terms of public health.

BBC news: doesn't say too much, but first commentary in the press for a couple of days:

I think Edward is relatively wise for the younger royals and keeping one's fingers crossed indicates to me that it's potentially serious and could go either way. My interpretation of William's OK is the same.

I do hope he pulls through but suspect it's potentially rather serious.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/02/2021 20:31

Any infection at that age is potentially serious though?

addicted2spaniels · 23/02/2021 20:41

I used to work in a care home, and it wasn't unusual for residents to need IV antibiotics in hospital to treat infection. Most were in for at least 2 to 3 weeks before returning, if not longer.

I'm not really sure why they announced it, tbh. Poor bugger deserves a bit of privacy and dignity at his age.

SleepingStandingUp · 24/02/2021 00:08

I'm not really sure why they announced it, tbh. Poor bugger deserves a bit of privacy and dignity at his age because some way or other is likely to get out, and then the assumption will be it's EOL because they didn't report it

PickAChew · 24/02/2021 00:45

Younger royals? Edward is older than me.

Lockdownbear · 24/02/2021 01:30

Is Edward not about 60? His mums 94 he can't be that young.

He's just been moved to St Bart's.

RickiTarr · 01/03/2021 13:07

He should be afforded more privacy than this. I suppose it’s not realistic but there is something very distasteful about the glee with which updates (and non updates) are being shared.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/03/2021 13:13

Sadly that was never going to be possible, RickiTarr. St Barts is a major hospital and sooner or later someone would have blabbed, so they probably thought it better to release a calm one liner before some idiot made a much bigger thing out of it

It's on the BBC website - do you really think I shouldn't have added what's widely available?

Daft.
