miss High viz men with matching ladders, what a day!

DD has just finished her 3rd semester at the HU (I was FU) . In Germany you apply to uni with the actual grades you got (think grades in May - application time ends September).

Spudlet · 12/03/2021 17:05

@Champagneforeveryone Well done to your DS!

We have had an exciting afternoon here. I decided that our lockdown tradition of doing a cake run to the local deli needed to be continued in some way, so after school DS and I set off to head over there. However, there had been a burst water main on the way so we were sent off on a diversion (thankfully short, but it was narrow country lanes which are normally very quiet, apart from when there’s a flipping diversion!). Once we had cake I just couldn’t face doing the same route in reverse so we walked the bike up to the barriers and the nice workmen (in full body hi-vis no less!) let us through - this was the first high point for DS as they had a mini digger and a pump. Then we got around the corner and hit the main flood, but there was no way I was turning back at that point so, much to DS’s delight, we put it into a low gear and kept going! The water was up to the pedals and we got wet feet but we made it through 💪 We then nearly got knocked backwards by the wind which is very strong here and in our faces all the way home 🥵 I am shattered!

@MissConductUS I think I would possibly enjoy the free time more if DH wasn’t working from home - not that he resents me not working, far from it. But I can hear him working away upstairs and being productive and it makes me feel I should be doing the same. I’m excited by the thought of doing some museum volunteering though so 🤞 for that.

I bought fresh fruit to put in the blender for smoothies, but didn’t think it through properly so now I am sitting in bed trying to poke the stones out of cherries...

MissConductUS · 12/03/2021 18:18

I buy frozen cherries to put in my yogurt. They come with the pits stones removed.

I'm in a zoom meeting, which is preventing me from eating lunch.

I forgot to say congratulations to your DS @Champagneforeveryone.

DH and I have cleared some more of the loft ready for my booked slot at the tip tomorow. It's now all stacked up in my living room ready to be loaded into the car in the morning.

I have used the recipe book recommended by @HelenaJustina again tonight. I am cooking a sweet potato and parsnip tagine with dates and coriander. Except I don't have any dates so have excluded them. It suggests serving it with couscous. I had couscous for lunch so am debating just doubling up on my couscous intake for the day (albeit in a completely different dish) or cooking some rice.

I will say I liked the instructions for this recipe which were essentially 'chop it up, chuck it in the tagine, put it in the oven for an hour'.
That's my kind of cooking.

Spudlet · 12/03/2021 19:37

I have scrolled back through the thread to find the cookbook and have ordered a copy because all of these recipes people are mentioning sound yummy.

@Sunbird24 My garlic press has a little thingy on it that you can use for stoning olives and I guess cherries too, although I can’t remember ever using it. It was only a cheapy one from the supermarket.

MissConductUS · 12/03/2021 19:44

I have a cherry depitting gadget at home that I use when I can get fresh cherries in season. It's just a bit of work to do them one by one. Last summer when both of the DC were home we went to a farm about an hour north of us that let you come in and pick cherries then pay by the pint. That was great fun and I still have some in the freezer.

My zoom meeting is over and I've had some leftover takeaway boneless chicken wings for lunch. DS is making pizza tonight, which is always cause for celebration.

I went wth the couscous as there is minimal effort involved in making it. It was the right choice. I have just finished my tea and it was lovely. And happily, there is loads left over.

soddingkitten · 12/03/2021 19:56

There is a bucket of dirty water in the "wet room". I forgot to pour it out on the 3rd. What do you think - how long until anybody notices and does something about it?

3rd April

Thanks for good wishes about the boiler part. The circumstances are too specific and outing to post in full, but we have now entered the “Godot phase”. The part is out there somewhere, it will arrive eventually but no-one knows when and no, we can’t just order up another one because the part is discontinued and it was the last one! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

I got rained AND hailed on earlier too and I have no idea when my warm boots will dry out.

This is my plan for the weekend > 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍰🍰🍰😴🍰🍰🍰🍰🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 12/03/2021 20:06

My horse had his worm count results back - he doesn't have worms 😃 it was well worth stalking him for 4 hours on my day off, waiting for him to shit...

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 12/03/2021 21:00

wouldn't the boiler part be an ideal candidate for 3D printing?

Great news about your horse!

HelenaJustina · 12/03/2021 21:01

@EggyPegg haven’t tried that one but will endeavour to do so in the next fortnight.
Our power just went out... I had a text from UK Power Networks warning me this might happen about 30 minutes ago, still took me by surprise!

MissConductUS · 12/03/2021 21:25

Welcome, @Apocalyptichorsewoman, and thanks for sharing your equestrian excrement and parasitic status news.

Sodding, if you can't get parts it's time for a new boiler. Other parts will fail.

I'm heading home for a well-deserved weekend. The site of my implant removal is no longer sore enough to torment me with some ibuprofen.

soddingkitten · 12/03/2021 21:29

It is only about 5 years old! The last one was in its 20s when we retired it!

MissConductUS · 12/03/2021 22:39

I'm shocked that they discontinued the part. In the US manufacturers have to supply parts for a minimum of ten years after the sale for something like a boiler, and most do so for longer as they can charge what they want for the parts.

I'm home have a rest while the men organize dinner. 😁

Tell me about it!

It’s windy and raining heavily here again. The wind is rattling down the chimney and the trees outside are thrashing around. I hope it doesn’t keep me awake.

We had a dishwasher tablet fail here today. It was amazed at how quickly our dishes backed up in the kitchen and the cutlery ran out. DH made a special trip out at lunchtime to buy more and restore order in the kitchen. I briefly toyed with idea of thinning out our cupboards, then remembered what a drag holiday cottages are because there’s never enough stuff.

Champagneforeveryone · 13/03/2021 04:10

Good Lord miss, that thread is mind boggling in terms of cost Shock

We had not travelled outside Europe when DS went (aged 15) on a 4 week scout expedition to Kenya. This was run by our local expeditionary society and was most definitely not a "Camps International" type affair. He worked closely with the charities they support and met the young lad of similar age to him who we sponsor. The first thing he said when he got off the coach (filthy, sunburnt, exhausted and several lbs lighter) was "I want to travel". Sadly however Covid has put paid to any plans we had over the past couple of years.

He's adamant that he wants to travel but not in a random, bum around Australia, Thailand, work in a bar for a bit etc way. He's very keen on visiting Asia, possibly to teach English and I don't think had considered actually studying abroad. Given the prices quoted I don't think I'll mention it Grin

EggyPegg · 13/03/2021 07:21

@Champagneforeveryone, his 4 week trip sounds amazing and exactly the sort of thing my SIL and I discussed doing with the DC once they are teens.

Sounds like uni first might be the right step for him then.

HelenaJustina · 13/03/2021 08:27

I woke up to power restored, exciting for me but hopefully dull enough for the rest of you to pass muster. I am going for a run in the wind, I am, I am, I am...

When our first dog had kidney disease, he needed regular wee tests. Ever followed a dog in the dark with a small saucepan? Luckily he was lead-walked, so we didn't have to run after him; but every time we stuck the pan under him he stopped weeing!
soddingkitten · 13/03/2021 08:35

That sounds challenging sue.

I saw a brilliant tip in The Litter Tray for collecting urine samples from a kitten or cat: replace the litter (temporarily) with clean polystyrene beanbag filling/balls in a scrupulously clean litter tray, then drain off the fresh wee post-pee. I’m posting because it was so inspired.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/03/2021 10:45

I am slightly excited to tell you that our local DIY shop has re-opened for private customers via prebooked timeslots. So I booked a slot for DH to buy wheels for his office chair and sealing rings for the leaking inlet for the washing machine. Yay!
We are living centrally so even this shop is in walking distance.

It is still windy and raining.

Spudlet · 13/03/2021 11:27

The little green guilt machine has been so neglected that it sent me a passive-aggressive email saying it would stop emailing me 😬 So I have finally gone back to it and placated the little bugger.

Altogether now - Ich trinke Wasser! Although I have a feeling I may have still managed to get that wrong 😳

Squirrel26 · 13/03/2021 11:31

I keep getting emails from Duo telling me ‘languages need practice!’ Alright you smug little green git. Why don’t you come round here and do the hoovering while I practice my ‘plurals’.

Royal Mail have sent me an email to tell me they’ve delivered my parcel. If they have they did it very stealthily, because neither I nor the dog noticed them. (And also I didn’t order and invisible parcel.)

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 13/03/2021 11:33

@spudlet
No, it's fine. You can replace Wasser with Wein, Gin, Kaffee, Tee Zwetschgenlikör, ....

I give you: Ben su içerim.
