In his head @Champagneforeveryone? Then there’s nothing for it. He’ll have to have it removed.

It’s a Hug Rug, @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER. They’re pretty much the same as Turtle Mats though. I’m not sure how the sizes compare but the new one is small to hopefully fit the little bit of space left by the original one and the almost-new one.

Champagneforeveryone · 16/02/2021 14:01

Don't tempt me squirrel

We have HugRugs, they're excellent (once you get over the price) Smaller ones at the front and back doors, and a larger one that I think was supposed to be a runner, but doubles excellently as a hearth rug. Initially useful because DDog1 had started to slip getting up, now useful to get rid of the mud and dog hair which just wouldn't be possible with a normal mat, you know, the ones proper adults have Grin

MissConductUS · 16/02/2021 14:18

Good day, lovely people of the thread. We've had an ice storm here overnight. The same storm has affected about half of the US population, including Math yesterday. So I'm working from home today.

@Champagneforeveryone, I'm sorry your DH is poorly. Tell him it might be Marburg fever, see if that gets him up and about. Grin

By the way, you all conducted yourselves as proper Brits yesterday when I carelessly let the last thread almost fill up completely. No one panicked, no one pushed in to take over. It was very civilized, really. Then as soon as the new thread opened the pent-up demand was unleashed.

That keep calm and carry on meme has something to it. If you add a brew (cup of tea) to the mix, you’re 90% there in British crisis management terms.

DS2 had a sight test earlier. His prescription has worsened, so there followed the palaver of socially distanced choosing of new frames. Thankfully he had a clear idea of what he wanted and settled on the 5th pair he tried. [Tick, tick]

We had homemade sausage rolls for lunch, using up the short-dated sausagemeat from the fridge [tick].

I tell you, its all go here.

Champagneforeveryone · 16/02/2021 16:11

Excellent news good people of this thread- DH is feeling much better.

All I needed to do was remind him how he would be unable to have his Covid jab tomorrow if he was that unwell and, as if by a miracle, the clouds parted. His voice is still trembly and he's still schlepping his feet in a manner that makes me want to club him to death with his own slippers, but you can all have faith that miracles do happen.

In other news, in a blatant attempt at an early April Fools joke I received an email to advise me that my annual travel insurance policy is about to expire, and offering me 10% off a renewal

soddingkitten · 16/02/2021 16:25

😂

Yeah, our annual travel policy has been an expensive expression of hope this year. It is up for renewal in June. 🤔 There is a booked holiday that we rolled into this year, but renewal would exceed the deposit we might want to claim against it so it would be pointless.

Spudlet · 16/02/2021 16:41

It’s a miracle! Hallelujah, etc etc Grin

DS has been playing with my exercise ball today. It is an extra large one because I’m quite tall, and we have a small living room, and he is rolling and bouncing it around in a way that’s giving me a real insight into that Indiana Jones scene Confused Spuddog has gone into hiding, although he did display nerves of pure tungsten earlier when DS was rolling it at the sofa where ddog was reclining. Nary a flinch from the old dog. He’s seen it all before by now.

I also saw the barn owl on my run just now. We see it out of the window quite often as it hunts along the verge but it’s still cool to see.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/02/2021 17:10

An ice storm sounds horrendous, Missconduct! Hope you’re keeping nice and warm indoors.

Must ring my dSis in Cape Cod to see how she’s faring.

I’ve made some pancakes and sort-of crepes Suzette sauce for tonight. Hardly any Cointreau left - we must have had that bottle for 20 years though.

Sunbird24 · 16/02/2021 19:04

I got unexpected pancakes for pudding, with caramelised apples and maple syrup

Squirrel26 · 16/02/2021 19:47

My friend shared a meme on Instagram earlier that was a photo of a barn owl with 'Barn owls when humans invented barns: 'Excellent. It's all coming together.' ' over it.

Is that a meme? I am too old to really understand what they are. Anyway, it made me laugh.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 16/02/2021 20:45

They let me out of the office at 19:55 today - to a warm (well +1°C) and drippy outside. The met people tell me now that instead of going down to -16 it will be going up +16 °C.

DH managed to be at the bakery at the right time and got 5 pieces of cake for the price of one (2 apple, 2 cherry crumble (Streusel?), Bienenstich (no idea?)). Which was nice!

@Squirrel26 - She's right - how DID barn owls realize that barns were invented form them? Did they try to nudge farmes in the right direction for centuries, living in trees? Thinking - he managed to build a house, he'll soon figure out barns?

Nydj · 16/02/2021 21:22

It’s all happening on this thread - I am very impressed with your haircut champagne. I don’t really understand what an ice storm is but it sounds nasty - I hope everyone affected is toasty indoors.
spud, didn’t your son choose new frames very recently or am I confusing him with someone else’s son?
We have gone mad and booked a few days break in the UK in May - it is possible that it may be allowed. They allow cancellations until the night before so we thought it was worth booking just to pretend that we had something to look forward to.
Also, we tried raspberry Fanta - it’s quite nice in a very fake plasticky sort of way.

HelenaJustina · 16/02/2021 21:22

Another day another walk with the DC! And I cleaned the bathrooms. As I wasn’t doing it at 9pm at night, I did the shower tile grout and used glass cleaner on the door and cubicle (after the Flash to get the grub off). No one is allowed to use it now...

chocolateisavegetable · 16/02/2021 21:29

The family voted to delay pancake day. This means I have more time to try and find strawberries

Champagneforeveryone · 16/02/2021 21:30

Excellent news nydj, forgive me but I forget where you're actually based?

And in regards to booking holidays, this has played to the latent gambler in me. Parting with a lump of cash with uncertain prospects of getting a return. I'm also a prolific planner, so the (six so far) cancelled holidays have allowed me to indulge this particular fetish Grin

Taswama · 16/02/2021 22:13

My Ikea bag clips arrived today. They don't all fit in the utensils drawer so I've put some in a top cupboard for when they need restocking.

MissConductUS · 16/02/2021 22:18

@Nydj - an Ice storm is a freezing rain event that deposits a coating of ice on the cold surfaces at ground level. It most often occurs when there is a warmer layer of air above a colder layer at ground level. They're fairly common on the US east coast states. There is really a massive storm in the US now, with lots of Texas experiencing record cold temperatures, snow, and power cuts.

@chocolateisavegetable I did buy some nice strawberries last weekend but not from any supermarket near you. I think ours come from Mexico this time of year.

We had a delivery of bag clips last week. They usually live on the worktop in an ancient mortar I inherited from my Mum. Said mortar is overflowing and Sodding thinks they are his new toy. They are turning up all over the house.
soddingkitten · 16/02/2021 22:35

There was an ice storm one winter where DH and I lived in the mid 90s (UK). We slithered across town on foot from the coach station, as we arrived home from a trip mid way through the storm. It was terrifying. Even reaching out to grab the handrail along one stretch of pavement was impossible because that too was coated in ice. While we were waiting at a crossing we could see the rain falling on to surfaces and freezing immediately. We lived near enough to A&E that we used the same corner shop as the staff in A&E. i heard from the guy in the shop later that one of the A&E nurses had slipped on the pavement outside and broken her hip. His shop was about 300m from A&E. 😮 I’ve never seen anything like it. It was way worse than heavy snow.

MissConductUS · 16/02/2021 23:25

It was way worse than heavy snow.

It's much worse than heavy snow. If enough ice accumulates it can bring down power lines and large tree branches. Travel also becomes essentially impossible, as you discovered. Things warmed up this afternoon and the ice melted off, so we dodge the bullet on this one.

There are another four to eight inches of snow in the forecast for Thursday into Friday afternoon.

Taswama · 17/02/2021 08:25

Thanks soddingkitten . I think it may have been your purchase that inspired me. We never have enough of the things and recently half a bag of chips ended up on the floor of the garage (where we have a proper freezer) as they had been put away without anything to keep the bag closed.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 17/02/2021 08:38

The snow on my terasse is gone, everything is dripping and wet and it is raining.

I took a day off bc. I have to collect DH from his OP and I do not know when. The won't let him out otherwise.

OrdinaryLife · 17/02/2021 09:33

Thank you for this thread of loveliness - I've lurked for a while and been enthralled by your calm news. Hope this is not too exciting - our small road outside is being resurfaced.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 17/02/2021 09:57

Ordinary
With tar? I love the smell - especially on a hot day after a rain.

It’s half term so the house is peaceful as one teenager is asleep and the other is on the Xbox. I am procrastinating when I should be wfh. So I will make some coffee and knuckle down.
I have also fed the birds and squirrels in the garden this morning.
