New dinner set - what would you buy?

We bought our last set of plates and bowls in a Debenhams sale and a couple are broken and thrown out / chipped now. Can't find replacements anywhere.

Dp fancies some patterned stuff we spotted in Tesco but I'm guessing we couldn't replace if we break any as theyrealways updating

Don't need cups - we have LOADS

We do need side plates, dinner plates, cereal bowls and pasta bowls

Denby is lovely but eye wateringly expensive

Any ideas?!

Corelle White. Virtually unbreakable and oven, microwave, dishwasher and freezer proof. Also lightweight and stack in a small amount of space. They do lots of colours but I have plain white ones. They've been the same design for 40+ years. American company.
I loved my corelle set I got in Costco in the US in the 80's, I got rid of it when we moved to the UK and then regreted it ever since. On the move back Costco didn't have it again, so we bought Pfaltsgraff set from the outlet mall, last 20 years, only replaced a couple of plates and bowls. Soneware sort of like Denby but not as nice.

20 years of denby here. My colourway is discontinued but as I have 12 place settings it isn't really an issue!

Never had an issue with the dishwasher - have had a neff/bosch and miele ones.

I also have a lovely fancy set of china that I inherited from my parents. It's fairly delicate so I don't use it for everyday but it is beautiful - it's from the 70s but is plain white porcelain with a platinum band. John Lewis were selling it until very recently and it is still sold in Germany so if I need spares they are fairly easy to get.

We've got an ikea set that's lasted quite a few years but they've discontinued it so eventually we'll have to change which is annoying. I'm really pleased with the quality though. I've got some pasta bowls from Tesco that I love, they're big and solid but I'm not keen on the colour.

Sophie Conran Portmeirion.

The hotel and cottages have them and they ate beautiful. But way out of my price range.

As a pp says, you can get denby with clubcard vouchers {3x face value). I don't ike their tableware, but have been using clubcard vouchers to gradually buy new pans, baking tons etc. If you time it right and buy when they have a sale on, you get even better value - last summer I got pans that retail at £240 for £49 worth of clubcard vouchers plus postage. They were reduced to £120 in the sale and as you get 3 x face value, they were an amazing bargain. Definitely have a look at their website.

Getoutofbed25 · 13/02/2021 23:05

I just bought the Denby elements light grey set, it’s very similar to our wedding Denby that’s been discontinued, and I mix and match them. No issues fitting in dishwasher, love the set. Used Tesco Clubcard vouchers. I wanted some medium plates and they only had seconds so I ordered them but I’d say they are noticeably seconds and wouldn’t do that again. Really pleased with them.

passtheorange · 13/02/2021 23:11

I've got a dinner set that I bought from Woolworths over 25 years ago, and it is pretty much on its last legs. I still love it.

But... for about the last 3 or 4 years I've been searching and searching for another set to replace it and do you know what? I haven't been able to find anything I like at all. I don't want those u-shaped cereal bowls, and most sets these days come with them rather than the shallower ones.

So I can't give you any advice at all, because there's nothing I like out there, sorry!

LarsErickssong · 13/02/2021 23:12

We've had a Denby set that I got in Debenhams with 70% off about 4 years ago, so far only 1 mug broken but I was eyeing up a lovely set in Tesco last week! The Denby dinner plates are too big though but not worth changing on that basis alone.

mootymoo · 13/02/2021 23:19

If you have Tesco clubCard points you can get Denby half price, worth every penny

Covidcorvid · 13/02/2021 23:19

I got a really nice Habitat set from sainsburys a few weeks ago.

SingingWaffleDoggy · 13/02/2021 23:20

We’ve got IKEA ones that look good but aren’t sealed/ fired (I’m not sure of the right terminology) correctly so leave black rings on our wooden worktops if left for any length of time. We are looking at using Clubcard points to get Denby so it’s good to read people’s thoughts here.

APurpleSquirrel · 13/02/2021 23:23

We got the Gordon Ramsey Maze sets from Dunelm several years ago & love it. Bought some more last year in the sale so now have three colours. No breakages so far.

Covidcorvid · 13/02/2021 23:24

@CoffeeWithMyOxygen

I am longing for the Olmo turquoise set from Habitat but they’ve discontinued it Sad
Argos have them.
TheSpottedZebra · 13/02/2021 23:28

Yes, look! www.argos.co.uk/product/9394061

TheSpottedZebra · 13/02/2021 23:30

Oh, actually scratch that. The bastards still have it listed but it's out of stock.
And it's lovely.

Gooseysgirl · 13/02/2021 23:31

I've had my Denby set ten years and I'm really disappointed with it. It hasn't stood up to daily use at all! And worst of all - the set I have had been discontinued so I can't even replace the the chipped and broken stuff. Would not buy from them again - just not worth the price at all

SquirrelFan · 13/02/2021 23:37

@DareIask and @Jigglyjugs when I look at the Sainsbury's website, I can only see a set of four sintra plates - no bowls, etc. Is there an option for a complete set? Maybe it's regional?

autumnboys · 13/02/2021 23:38

We have Denby - wedding gift in 1999. Mum has the same colour way and she’s had hers for over 25 years. I’m interested by the comments about it not fitting in a dishwasher - between us she and I have used it in 5 different houses and probably 7 different dishwashers without problem. But perhaps we’ve just got used to it? Anyway, it’s robust, looks nice and compared to what some friends had for their wedding, was a reasonable cost - we’ve been able to replace it/add to it.

idontlikealdi · 13/02/2021 23:42

I've just replaced all mine at Dunelm, plain white, click and collect. Can't fault it.

I wouldn't get a pattern, Tesco denby or otherwise.

fitflopqueen · 13/02/2021 23:45

We needed new everyday crockery about 6 months ago, bought 2 x 4 place settings of M&S Maxim - so dinner plates, bowls and side plates, (£100), have spode pasta bowls and some older sets of soup bowls/ dinner plates and some of the blue patterned eastern european serving bowls. Nice to be able to mix with the white basics.
Wedding dinner service is 32 years old and all as new, is used infrequently....

Quornflakegirl · 13/02/2021 23:50

I have had a Emma Bridgewater set for almost 10 years, they are robust and look like new. I like that you can mix and match patterns.

pipppasqueak · 13/02/2021 23:50

Are you anywhere near a Boundary Mill outlet? They do fantastic end of ranges, often left over from hotel orders, for about £1 per item. Often made in Britain too. Also they sell Denby and various brands.

germainegrainne · 13/02/2021 23:50

We have recently started collecting a Denby set - for free - using our Tesco Clubcard vouchers. You can change £5 of vouchers for £15 to spend at Denby online. We also buy the 'seconds' version of the collection we like for further discount.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 13/02/2021 23:52

I have a 20+ year old set of denby I still love. Theres only been a few casualties in that time but its mostly intact.

Early last year, after baulking at the cost of replacing a pasta bowl and adding a extra set of 4, I decided to get some ikea pasta bowls instead.

Big mistake! Dont get me wrong I love ikea, most my house is filled with the stuff and usually it lasts. But the china 😖😖😖 we'd smashed all 4 bowls within six months!!

September I cashed in my tesco points and bought the Denby

Bloodylovecheese · 13/02/2021 23:57

Another vote for Sophie Corran Portmerion in plain white. I bought my set from an outlet village and about half price. The good thing with a well known brand is they sell separates for when you break bits.
