New dinner set - what would you buy?

We bought our last set of plates and bowls in a Debenhams sale and a couple are broken and thrown out / chipped now. Can't find replacements anywhere.

Dp fancies some patterned stuff we spotted in Tesco but I'm guessing we couldn't replace if we break any as theyrealways updating

Don't need cups - we have LOADS

We do need side plates, dinner plates, cereal bowls and pasta bowls

Denby is lovely but eye wateringly expensive

Any ideas?!

@TerribleCustomerCervix

Ooh I like those. Although I instantly looked for orange and they don't do pasta bowls in those. Dp is a NUFC fan so the red is definitely out!

I like portmeirion and have been using one of their sets for 18 years. It is very hard wearing and we haven't had many breakages. I also buy spares from ebay.

We got Denby Regency Green as wedding presents 25 years ago and it's still going strong. We also have Denby Jet for everyday use. I'm slightly bemused by comments that it doesn't fit in cupboards, dishwashers or microwaves. We've never had an issue with our bog standard cupboards etc. We've broken a couple of bits but they've been easy to replace so far.

I had this recently and went for Fox and Ivy (I think) from Tesco.

Nice than the cheap sets, but t not too pricey that it would break my heart to use them/chip them.

DinosApple · 15/02/2021 10:08

I found some nice ones on M&S for £30.

Is Denby stoneware? I'm not hugely keen on that tbh. I do like Belleek though.

We have two mismatched chipped sets that are both Argos, plus a full 1920s set that I got 'for best' from auction. It was maybe £50 and has at least 12 of each item (dinner plates, side plates, dessert plates), plus tureens, serving dishes and platters, with an art deco pattern.

On fox and ivy be careful - I bought some lovely mugs, but they aren’t dishwasher or microwave safe.

I didn’t think to look🙄

bellocchild · 26/02/2021 18:46

If you really like the Tesco, why not buy two sets and use one for spares? You would be fed up with it by the time you'd worked through that many...

Cony95 · 26/02/2021 18:50

Corelle. Yes they are eye watering expensive but lasts. My sister received a full set as wedding gift and only one is chipped. She said used them every day since married, nearly 20 years ago and she have 9 kids. I am buying 2 sets of model Lia as I have small kids and they don't want to eat in kids plastic bowls and plates.

Theoldwrinkley · 26/02/2021 18:56

Why does everything have to match exactly? Either go for a ‘theme’, eg all flowery, or as I have which is plain white. Can look classy (expensive) if fine china, but for everyday it is just various shades of white. Means you can get sizes etc which maybe suit your lifestyle, but maybe aren’t made by the ‘one’ particular company. I can get stuff from Morrison’s or Harrods.

I am longing for the Olmo turquoise set from Habitat but they’ve discontinued it Sad
Is it this set?
HollowTalk · 26/02/2021 19:00

Sorry, I meant this one - it seems to be on sale in Argos.

Poppys · 26/02/2021 19:07

I have longed for Denby for years. Couldn’t justify it so bought a Habitat set last year and have been very disappointed. Badly chipped already despite being careful.
So I’ve bitten the bullet and bought side plates, dinner plates and bowls in Denby azure seconds and when I got to the online checkout I saw I could use Clubcard vouchers x 3 the value so I paid £50 rather than over £200! Waiting for delivery but I will update when it arrives.

grownuplefthome · 26/02/2021 19:09

Buy Denny plates dishes etc at auction , most have boxes of the stuff for sale and usually go for little money.

hil1910 · 26/02/2021 21:29

Luckily we have a Denby factory outlet shop nearby so I bought all my stuff from there. Use it everyday and easily replaceable.

JellyBeanz77 · 27/02/2021 17:08

ProCook is good. Their sets tend to have pasta bowls rather than mugs and, with some, they do a double set discount. This one is quite like Denby shape www.procook.co.uk/product/procook-oslo-stoneware-dinner-set-16-piece-4-settings

Niftymum · 27/02/2021 19:52

I have had Denby for many years, it’s robust and stands the test of time, it is available quite often in sales, at many McArthur Glen outlets plus Tesco points could be redeemed for Denby online. Odd pieces can be replaced and they also do many other pieces to grow your set if needed. You can register with them so they inform you if it is to be discontinued and sign up to emails to receive notifications of sales etc.

Ken1976 · 27/02/2021 20:27

Do you live near an outlet village? We got Sophie Conrad dinner sets from the Denbigh shop at Cheshire oaks . They always seem to have my set in stock so I'm not worried about replacements . Good luck x

justanotherneighinparadise · 27/02/2021 20:41

@FuckingHateRats

We bought the Le Creuset plates/bowls/pasta bowls. The rainbow effect means if we ever do break one and the colour has been discontinued, we'll be able to add a different colour without any bother.

I LOVE them. They make me smile every day.

Gorgeous!

It is @HollowTalk but they are teasing bastards - they have it listed on the site but it’s not available for delivery or in stock anywhere.
