New dinner set - what would you buy?

We bought our last set of plates and bowls in a Debenhams sale and a couple are broken and thrown out / chipped now. Can't find replacements anywhere.

Dp fancies some patterned stuff we spotted in Tesco but I'm guessing we couldn't replace if we break any as theyrealways updating

Don't need cups - we have LOADS

We do need side plates, dinner plates, cereal bowls and pasta bowls

Denby is lovely but eye wateringly expensive

Any ideas?!

We have Denby Greenwich, it's no problem in the dishwasher. The advantage of a brand that stays around is that you can replace the odd breakage but we've had very few.
Otherwise I'd look at Habitat or IKEA 365+.

RandomMess · 13/02/2021 20:22

We had Denby white it chipped easily. Hated it by the time we decided to get rid.

MsFogi · 13/02/2021 20:22

We used to put up with Ikea ones because it was heartbreaking when the expensive stuff got chipped broken. However it looked horrible pretty rapidly (black marks from cutlery on the white). So I now buy sets from Wayfair - you get really nice sets for not much money so it is not the end of the world when things inevitably get broken.

I am also on the lookout and will probably go with Denby possibly second hand from eBay. My late mother's dinner service was Denby, from her wedding gifts, and despite being used every single day and put in the dishwasher, was pristine.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 13/02/2021 20:32

Does Denby squeak? I can't stand plates that squeak Sad

theemmadilemma · 13/02/2021 20:34

I'm building a mix of navy and white, mixed patterns.

Ffsnosexallowed · 13/02/2021 20:35

I just bought a denby set in their sale with tesco vouchers. Cost me the grand total of £7.95

Candleabra · 13/02/2021 20:39

I got Denby white nearly 20 years ago. Hardly any breakages, still looks perfect. White, classic, so not dated either. (I think some of the chunky earth coloured ones do look dated now, though I didn't like them new either!).
It's probably a once or twice in a lifetime purchase. Get something you love.

RaininSummer · 13/02/2021 20:45

I buy plain white for everyday China. Easy to match. I do love my fancy set though even though I collected Safeway tokens for it. Only use it Easter and Christmas for family dinners

Gurufloof · 13/02/2021 20:45

A few years ago I noticed I had several different sets/parts of sets . Got rid, bought some Asda set that looked pretty. Less than 20 quid and currently still all in one piece.
When I break enough I will do the same. I have thought about denby and others but fashions change and what looks good now, will look shit in 30 years.

TreacleHart · 13/02/2021 20:48

Definitely Denby. Yes it can be expensive ( check their website , they often have good sales ) They last years so all things considered works out cheaper in the long run.
Got ours back during first Lockdown @ 60% off.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/02/2021 20:48

@addicted2spaniels

We've just bought Denby, and I'm heartbroken with it. The dinner plates are small and too thick to sit in the dishwasher, and for whatever reason, our dishwasher just isn't washing it properly so I end up having to do it by hand.

If I'd have known, I wouldn't have bothered. I gave our eldest DD all of our Gorden Ramsey Maze set that we had in 3 different colours, and I miss it Sad

Same here. I bought some Denby in a black friday offer a couple of years ago and feel a bit cheated. It's really nothing special and even at half price, it was very expensive.

We have some other 20+ year old cheap Ikea and Wilko stuff and while a few pieces have got smashed, I don't see a problem in having a mish mash of different stuff. Plus I don't understand what extra value you get from more expensive crockery. I've now got a load of crockery that's basically got to outlast me for it not to be a rip off.

I think if you've seen something you like in Tesco, buy that, and get a few extra to cover breakages. It'll still be cheaper than the Denby and you'll probably enjoy it as much.

Cookerhood · 13/02/2021 20:50

We have Denby. I'm fed up.with the damn stuff, it's so robust I have no excuse to replace it! It can be awkward in the narrow bits of the dishwasher.

DorisDay88 · 13/02/2021 20:52

Been married 38 years and do you know it doesn't really matter
We use plates we had before we got married, plates we had as wedding presents, plates we had in a property we bought to rent out and then reclaimed
Proper mix match stuff
Use whatever makes you happy

KatharinaRosalie · 13/02/2021 20:54

I love the Dinera from IKEA, got a mix of grey and pink www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/dinera-18-piece-service-grey-blue-80152546/

Chattercino · 13/02/2021 20:56

We've got Sophie Conran and I love it! www.johnlewis.com/sophie-conran-for-portmeirion-dinnerware-set-white-12-piece/p231699734
I don't know how this compares price-wise to Denby, but I think it's cheaper. We use this set everyday,

howdidigettobe50something · 13/02/2021 20:57

I love Denby but discovered that the Original Factory Store do a very similar range for a fraction of the cost. They repeatedly have it in stock and we were able to replace some cereal bowls that got broken recently. Worth a look if you have a store near you.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 13/02/2021 20:59

I wanted Denby but not the weight and thickness, so searched and found Aynsley china set I really like in Debenhams. I ended up with two set of 12 of This one Surprisingly hard wearing and it's in daily use, goes in the microwave and the dishwasher. In 5 years I broke one bowl, dropped on a tile floor.

MrsClatterbuck · 13/02/2021 20:59

I have a lovely Denby set bought at least 25 years ago. We bought some salad plates as well. Then Dh bought 2 place settings from a local antique/junk shop. They had actually 8 place setting in total and I so wish we had bought the lot as they were a really good price. I was already missing a sidebpkate Avenue had got broken. We only had the extra settings a couple of days when DH chipped one of the dinner plates was not amused
I bought a set from M&S a couple of years ago as I was scared to use the Denby every day. The dinner plates do not fit in the dishwasher and now I if I was to do it again I would buy a completely white set. M&S sent me 2 white dinner plates in error in one of my orders and they are now used all the time while my new lime green and white plates sit in the cupboard.
My denby is no longer available and the prices on those sites that sell odd China are extortionate.

I’ve just splashed out on Denby Intro Stone White in the sales (Dunelm sells this). Very plain so shouldn’t date too much. I did it precisely because I am sick of having odd numbers and not a set of anything or every plate with a chip in it that can’t be replaced. I bought a lovely own brand set from John Lewis then after owning it for about 18 months my DD had a disaster and dropped a big pile of plates and smashed 60% of it. Went back to JL and discovered they’d stopped making it after two years. At least with Denby or similar there is a lot knocking around on eBay or in plenty of different retailers and they will email you with a years warning if they’re going to stop making the pattern you register as owning.

I guess the other way round it is to choose totally plain white stuff that easy to match in.

YouokHun · 13/02/2021 21:09

Very good point people are making about Denby coupe style plates not fitting in the dishwasher. I bought one single plate as a sample because the shops are closed and when I put it in the dishwasher I noticed it was a tight fit but OK. A disaster to order it and then have to revert to hand washing up!

dementedpixie · 13/02/2021 21:16

I had to send back a dinner set we bought from The Range as it was too big for our dishwasher. Had to get smaller sized dishes from IKEA. They seem sturdy enough

BarbaraofSeville · 13/02/2021 21:17

I just shove my Denby blue coupe plates in the dishwasher any old how because why have a dog and bark yourself?

They take up far too much room though, entitled fuckers.

Mosaic123 · 13/02/2021 21:38

Corelle White. Virtually unbreakable and oven, microwave, dishwasher and freezer proof. Also lightweight and stack in a small amount of space. They do lots of colours but I have plain white ones. They've been the same design for 40+ years. American company.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 13/02/2021 21:44

I am longing for the Olmo turquoise set from Habitat but they’ve discontinued it Sad
