New dinner set - what would you buy?

We bought our last set of plates and bowls in a Debenhams sale and a couple are broken and thrown out / chipped now. Can't find replacements anywhere.

Dp fancies some patterned stuff we spotted in Tesco but I'm guessing we couldn't replace if we break any as theyrealways updating

Don't need cups - we have LOADS

We do need side plates, dinner plates, cereal bowls and pasta bowls

Denby is lovely but eye wateringly expensive

Any ideas?!

@TheSpottedZebra

Oh, actually scratch that. The bastards still have it listed but it's out of stock. And it's lovely.
It's showing as available at all branches in my area.

I have Denby. Also have Denby cookware, saucepans and frying pans. I love it. The outlet shops are good value.

China is much harder wearing than pottery. We’ve had our set for 27 years, and we’re a bit bored with it! The design is wearing off too, but no chips! It was from M&S, we got two sets, so didn’t need any more after occasional droppings.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 14/02/2021 10:35

I’m sloooowly replacing our cheap ikea stuff with Cornishware. Quite expensive, but I’ve got some stuff from their seasonal seconds sales and the “flaws” are unnoticeable.

They’re hand painted by a passionate and slightly mad woman who took over the pottery, and the stuff is absolutely gorgeous.

We had the same issue with the ikea set that a pp did, where the cutlery created black scratches on the plates.

FuckingHateRats · 14/02/2021 10:38

Oh no! We've had the Le Creuset a year (mugs longer) and none of it shows any signs of wear at all - that's a shame.

ImAncient · 14/02/2021 10:40

Apologies if someone has already posted this but have you looked on here

www.chinasearch.co.uk/

You may be able to get replacements.

Thewindsofchange · 14/02/2021 10:50

When dh and I moved in together in 2001 we bought a cheap cream dinner set from Argos. We broke two plates (one of which we were able to replace from Big W, shows how long ago it was!) and dh broke a mug just before we replaced them.
We've only replaced them as I wanted something new for our new kitchen. They lasted well for the price.
Got a new set from Tesco. Gone with 8 place settings so I can be lazy about washing up!!
They don't stack quite so well in the dishwasher (the sides are quite steep) but I love them so don't care.

gassylady · 14/02/2021 10:50

Another with Denby still going strong at 20years plus. Couple of breakages after dropped onto stone floor and two chipped edges. Does take up lots of room in the dishwasher. But we only use the very big plates for a roast for everyday we use the medium plates. My pattern still available but some changed shapes so couldn’t replace a bowl like for like new.

But I’m now rather sick of the sight of it! Will check out the neutral ranges and spend some clubcard points I think Grin

RosesAndHellebores · 14/02/2021 10:51

I have Wedgwood White. Replaced Denby Memories with it about 12 years ago, mostly because the Denby was worn and very very dated. It's still boxed up in the gge.

We had Wedgwood Bianca as a wedding present but use it rarely as it has to be hand washed.

I put my hand on my heart and promise you all that good quality China and a stone kitchen floor is not a match made in heaven. nor for mobile phones

dottiedodah · 14/02/2021 10:51

Sainsburys have some lovely Habitat Sets ,can buy singly or in a box (full Dinner set) about £40 .00 or a fiver each for bowls /plates .Really good value IMO

Oldraver · 14/02/2021 11:04

Have you looked on EBay ?

I am still buying bits of a set I first got in the late 90's. Just bog standard BHS stud

DuesToTheDirt · 14/02/2021 11:09

We have Denby - 30 years old now but you can still get replacements. However, many pieces are chipped now and although I hate using chipped stuff I can't really justify the cost of replacing them, it's not cheap.

mrsbyers · 14/02/2021 11:14

We’ve got le creuset for day time and Denby for evening meals - the Denby don’t fit the plate racks in my dish washer but I just line them up the other way on towards the back of the machine and clean great - super sturdy too

RobBeckettsTeeth · 14/02/2021 11:19

Years ago I got a gorgeous Derby set with club card points. It fit in the dishwasher but not the wall cupboards or the microwave. I put up with it for a while then got Gordon Ramsey Maze.
The original colour is discontinued so we have white bowls as well as the original colour
We keep ours in a deep wide drawer so it was important that it stacked

clopper · 14/02/2021 11:21

I'm on my second set of Denby because I fancied a change after years with the same pattern but have passed the original set to DS. They are hard to break and chip so I think are worth the money. Also I wanted to support British manufacturing, so that was another reason to choose them. I have bought them through JL and the Denby seconds shop.

Pipandmum · 14/02/2021 11:27

Problem with pattern supermarket dinnerware is once they stop production then it's gone - they change with the seasons. I got some really nice blue and white from Sainsbury's about three years ago and a few have broken - can't get any now, and unlike Denby, they are not exactly high price items that people would keep. By the way there are 'lost pattern' websites and I'd be surprised if you can't find your Denby somewhere.
So, for every day, I've bought four boxes (so everything for 12 people) in a white with ribbed edges from Sainsbury's. I usually only have 6-8 people if entertaining, but with the extra sets it should last a while.
I did splurge on gorgeous Sophie Conran Mistletoe set for Christmas- a real extravagance but it was an Xmas present to myself after lusting after it for years!

billy1966 · 14/02/2021 11:52

30 years ago I bought a a huge selection of plain white ware china that was being sold in a closing down sale.

Still going strong after all these years.
Plain white like towels and sheets is so easy to add to.

I love the simplicity of white.

Petrarkanian · 14/02/2021 11:56

creamcornwall.co.uk/collections/plates

I'd buy these.

Serena1977 · 14/02/2021 12:09

I love our denby Greenwich set. Got a mixture of firsts and seconds. Love collecting and adding bits to it. Live near to the factory so feels great to buy local and can get firsts and seconds easily.

TiddleTaddleTat · 14/02/2021 12:12

Just ordered some Denby end of line clearance plates and bowls on Clubcard points. Could never afford it normally. 4 bowls 4 plates £40 but about £12 in Clubcard vouchers .

Ginisatonic · 14/02/2021 12:19

Another vote for Sophie Conran Portmeirion. There was a sale on the website recently. Might still have it. But I bought what I needed from Ocado and it was a bit cheaper than buying direct.

HelloDoris · 14/02/2021 12:20

I use Woods Ware Beryl/Jasmine/Iris and have tonnes of it. It's so brilliant, and I pick it up at car boots/charity shops/Market Place for pennies. despite a lot of it being nearly 70 years old. I have a denby set I purchased 20 years ago that we no longer use. I should really sell it, I don't particularly like it but it was hard wearing.

@TerribleCustomerCervix do you have a link to the Cornishware please? I’d love to see it as have some very old items of traditional blue/white stripped crockery

www.cornishware.co.uk/

Sorry, I don’t know how to do fancy links!
