What names do you think will never be revived?

I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

@mynameistracy

Always see my name in these threads! I've spent a lifetime not liking my name but made peace with it in my late 30's!

What I find strange is I keep thinking people are saying my name but they are actually calling on a little Gracie

Tracy = naff & Gracie seems to be popular but sound so similar to me!

I think names go in waves as quite often they are calling people after relatives in the family.

Yes!

It’s strange how one letter can change whether people like a name or not.

Harry is fine
Gary is not

@Dryadia

Maureen Margaret

Ernest
Keith

I used to work with someone who named his sons Albert & Ernest...

They’re both under 10.
He was a bit older than me and most of the other staff and genuinely did not notice the Sesame Street nod.

@ilovespinach

I live in Germany. You'd be surprised how many Paulinas and Colins there are
True true @ilovespinach ! There were 3 Eileens/ Aileens at my DS's kindergarten last year.

Colin
Peter
Paul
Moritz/ Maurice

All names of under 6 year olds at DS nursery. All names which I thought had "done" their time.

Biblical names will always come back.

I had a work colleague who was openly scathing about someone naming their baby Florence. She said it was old fashioned.
She was challenged with the fact that her son is Noah. You can't get much older than that.
Her reply, yeah, but it's trendy isn't It!

FunnyInjury · 11/02/2021 13:49

Mildred
Maureen
Maud
Myra

I've heard of most of the others being used once or twice over the years.

Some like baby Brian (now 4) and little Gary (now 7) have been named after relatives.
I think most names will be re-used in this way unless they are truly awful names Smile

NotYourReindeer · 11/02/2021 13:50

I have a Polish friend and her children (age range 1 to 16) are:

Phillip
Brian
Derek
Frederick
Peter

I can't see the following coming back as they would have already with the resurgence of older lady names:

Ethel
Hilda
Edna
Agnes
Mavis
Irene
Pamela

MrsKoala · 11/02/2021 13:51

I know someone who recently had a Humphrey, which I didn’t see coming back.

Names like Nigel, Graham and Clive seem so of their time that I can’t see them coming back, but then again names like Julian and Simon are of a similar type and I love them and Finlay is very popular round here.

Whoever said Frank - I know of a few under 5. Along with a couple of Agnes and Esme.

I think names are so interesting. Such a window into society.

VinylDetective · 11/02/2021 13:52

I’ve always hated my first name, to the point of always using my middle name. Apparently it’s right back in fashion now although I’ve yet to meet any little Veras!

jerrywesterby · 11/02/2021 13:55

Keith
Paula

NotYourReindeer · 11/02/2021 13:56

David and Brian are definitely very popular around here, we do have a large Polish community and the names seem popular for young children.

I remember about 10 years ago being horrified by an acquaintance naming their firstborn Eric and a year later their other child Dennis! Both named after their grandfathers.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/02/2021 13:57

I like lots are these names, and I know plenty of toddlers named Peter (or Piotr), Gary (for Gearóid) and Maud (ten a penny) etc.

Myra and Adolf are definitely unusable though.

Soubriquet · 11/02/2021 13:57

We’ve said if we have another boy it would be Eric Grin

My exBil has just had a baby Donald. Which everyone was a little surprised at.

Soubriquet · 11/02/2021 13:59

Adolf I get but why is Myra so unusable

People use Joseph and Rose. What is so different about Myra that it can’t be used?

Elaine, have we had that yet? In my mind it tied to the 70s like Sharon, Tracey, Denise, Claire...

JustanotherTuesday · 11/02/2021 14:03

My first and middle names have appeared here. They are hideous and definitely shouldn't make a comeback. My DM picked names of her generation and they have always been old fashioned to me. I would have rather been called Tracey but as my Nanny had four grandaughters with that name , my Mum wanted something different.

Freda my name.

VanquishGirl · 11/02/2021 14:08

@Plonque

I came to say Gary!

I know two Gary's who will be around 40 but that's the youngest - I've never heard of any younger than that.

I did too!! Before I'd even opened the thread I muttered 'Gary' Grin
