I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now

Today's teenagers don't associate the name Kylie with Kylie Minogue the way 40 somethings do. They associate Kylie with expensive makeup.

PattyPan · 14/02/2021 10:24

Average age of Corrie viewer is 35

I’m genuinely surprised to read that! I’m 25 and I don’t even know what channel it’s on. Maybe it’s a north/south thing.
I imagine most people would still associate Audrey with Hepburn before they thought of Corrie though?

@IggyAce

Fanny Dick Derek Norma
I have a Norma. To be fair she's Norma-Jean, but teachers often shorten it to just Norma.
rc22 · 14/02/2021 10:31

@WeeDangerousSpike It's absolutely devastated me!! Alexa was one of my favourite girl's names and strong contender for if I ever have a daughter. Obviously very much off the list now!!

simonneilsbeautifulhair · 14/02/2021 10:32

My other name option for her was Audrey but after Hepburn. I've never watched Coronation Street so that wasn't even a thought that crossed my mind.

Delatron · 14/02/2021 10:34

Yes I disagree about Audrey. And the only people I know who watch Corrie are my parents.

Lots of Audreys around here, it’s quite popular and I like it. Also Nancy.
Heard a Daphne the other day which I think is fab and due a revival.

Just wait until we all have grandchildren I guarantee there will be Pauls and Claires and baby Stevens!

WeeDangerousSpike · 14/02/2021 10:36

@rc22 thee was a family on TV the other day, their DD was about 10 and called Alexa, poor kid! I bet she changes her name, she's going to be constantly on edge with people around her saying 'Alexa' do this or that!

There were 9 baby boys named Gary in Ireland in 2019. And 5 baby girls named Myra. No Adolfs.

There is a cool interactive tool on CSO.ie where you can check the frequency of any name in any year since 1964.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/02/2021 11:47

What, they put Gary on the birth cert?!

I assumed all Garys were really Gareths or Gearóids.

Nonamesavail · 14/02/2021 12:35

I really hate how Audrey sounds lol

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 14/02/2021 13:00

Agree about Daphne. I think it's a lovely name.

Audrey, no. Hepburn or no Hepburn! I also happen to have been a fan of Doris Day ...

Further upthread, 'Agnes' is pretty popular these days.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 14/02/2021 13:05

I loathe the 'middle-aged' names, ie. Terry, Derek, Pat, Janet, Joyce, Sheila, Marjorie, Linda, SO DULL!!

I think those are more the boomer generation. Gen X (currently middle-aged) are Amanda, Caroline, Nicola, Lisa, Michelle, Victoria, Rebecca, Kirsty etc for women, or for men Jonathan, Mark, Jason, Matthew, James, Paul, John, and the odd Kevin, Keith, Brian and Darren. (The latter four ain't going to be making a comeback any time soon IMO)!

Don’t forget Claire. There were no fewer than three Claire Louises on the maternity ward I was on 46 years ago.

It’s just trends: we call our kids names from our grandparents generation and our kids will do the same. They won’t have to same connotations to them.

Buggersticks · 14/02/2021 14:59

Deborah
Janet
Sheila
Derek
Nigel
Carole
Pamela
Terry

CarmonEileen · 14/02/2021 15:52

My Dd 14 is an Isobel, very popular in the primary I work in too, more so than Isabelle/Isabella.

Caspianberg · 14/02/2021 16:55

This thread is basically all the names we considered on our baby name list! Ds is only a baby and both his names have been mentioned here

Our girls names included:
Rita, Alma, Joy, Nora, Pearl, Lois, Susan, Winnie

Two of my GC are named after great grandparents. It's circular isn't it.
ancientgran · 14/02/2021 17:18

Just realised 4 of my GC are named after great grand parents, 2 my side and two from the other parents side so I forgot them.

DK123 · 14/02/2021 17:47

I was just flicking through a copy of the Beano. Not heard of a young Dennis or a Roger in a long time!

TulipsDaffodils · 14/02/2021 17:53

Someone posted the names that are fashionable in North London at the moment recently and it was things like Maude and Agnes. I can't remember the others now.
