I don’t think I’ll ever hear of a baby Gary.

I know two adult Gary’s and both are in their 50’s now
@terrywynne , I came across an Obedience (my surname) when researching my family tree. Don't think that one will come back.
Have however recently met a young Praise-god though..
I did think I wrote it that I was being quite Anglo-centric and that those names might still be elsewhere particularly where there is a strong Evangelical tradition

@Libraryghost

I had a great aunty Dorcas and another called Honora. I thought that were hilarious when I was a kid but I kind of like them now!
I taught a Dorcas recently. She was known as cas and pretty embarrassed by her full name.
Libraryghost · 13/02/2021 19:38

@Tatogratin yeh another Dorcas! I really like it. My brother (disrespectful little swine) always called her Aunty Dork behind her back.

An old friend from school recently had a baby Kimberley and another had a girl called Savannah both surprised me as what I consider dated names. Roxanne is another of the same ilk I think. Names which seemed really sophisticated in the 80s. They live in a really MC area of London too so I would have thought they’d have chosen differently, I can’t imagine there’d be many in their school with those names.

I think Barbara's a lovely name!

And David is a classic name.... it's not flavour of the month ATM but people will use it as a 'family' name.
I loathe the 'middle-aged' names, ie. Terry, Derek, Pat, Janet, Joyce, Sheila, Marjorie, Linda, SO DULL!!

But yes, in the next generation people will remember grandma's name with affection and start using these names again.
I do wonder why people jump on the bandwagon of popular names without realising how it is going to 'age' their children in the future. For example you don't hear of many Nigels any more. And as much as I love Kylie herself, I wouldn't name a kid after her.

"Ivy" used to be my most unfavourite name... why name your baby after a poisonous creeping plant that's hard to eradicate and damages your brickwork?

It seems quite popular now though Hmm

However the one name I really don't think will make a comeback is BRENDA. Yik!

I was on a maternity ward, nearly 50 years ago. One woman was sobbing after visiting and when asked what was wrong she said her husband had been to register the birth and he'd called the baby Alfie. Everyone looked round in horror and sympathised with her, she was inconsolable that her baby had been saddled with such a horrible old man name. The only comfort anyone could offer was one woman who said, "It could be worse, he could have called him Archie." Everyone agreed.

ancientgran · 13/02/2021 20:26

I know a little Humphrey and a Frank.

OhWhyNot · 13/02/2021 20:36

Francis and Lawrence are both nice names I love Francis (and Francesca)

I’m not so keen on Frank

TurquoiseDragon · 13/02/2021 21:38

For those doubting the name Myra would come back, I just checked the darkergreen website linked earlier, and there were 49 babies given the name in 2019.

There are very, very few names that are a definite no, they'll all come back eventually.

TurquoiseDragon · 13/02/2021 21:42

I have just remembered I have a Zillah in my family tree. Apparently named after her mother, who was a Priscilla, known as Cilla.

Marcipex · 13/02/2021 21:44

I can’t imagine Ethel making a comeback.
Still, I’d have said that about Eva and Noah.

hiredandsqueak · 13/02/2021 21:51

I had Aunts Cissie, Gladys and Avis I don't think these will be popular again. Also had uncles Ernest and Edwin not heard of these names being used lately either.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/02/2021 22:03

I'll throw Muriel and Eugene into the ring

feellikeanalien · 13/02/2021 22:17

Audrey. I knew a few at school but I've never come across anyone under 40 with the name.

Mark.
Keith.
Sidney.

There are plenty of little Audreys around East London. The ones I know are aged 3 and 4.

Delatron · 13/02/2021 22:53

Know quite a few little Audreys round here (SE) was on my list 10 years ago but had boys!

TeaAddict235 · 14/02/2021 09:14

Renville

rockinaftermidnite · 14/02/2021 09:31

Bertha
Georgina
Mabel
Percy
Lesley
Bertie
Jeremy?

AuntieStella · 14/02/2021 09:37

Audrey isn't going to catch on again for as long as there is a major Coronation Street character still going. It took a long time (and a whole new telly show) for Vera to be thinkable again, and even now loads of people still think 'Duckworth'

Soaps don't tarnish every character's name, but the big enduring characters which are onscreen for decades definitely attract the association

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 14/02/2021 09:50

I think Mabel is back.

PattyPan · 14/02/2021 09:51

Are people who watch coronation street the age to be having children? I thought soaps were more of an old person thing. My Nan used to watch it but I didn’t know it was even still going, let alone what any of the characters would be called. None of my friends watch soaps either.

pinkstripeycat · 14/02/2021 09:52

Paula
Barbara

pinkstripeycat · 14/02/2021 09:54

Kylie is and has always been really popular on Australia

AuntieStella · 14/02/2021 09:54
