For a good distraction, I recommend the cat thread in AIBU, by the way.

@TheReluctantPhoenix
You are very welcome on here and I don't think your views are very different to many on here. We are not against all restrictions.

We are against petty restrictions that are unlikely to create issues.
We are not against reporting big parties or events - we are against reporting Mr X because he has been out for 2 walks or Mrs Z because a family member visited or the very minor infractions that you also acknowledge.
We are also, most importantly, aware of the effects these restrictions (however necessary) have on people and are supportive of people's struggles in living within these restrictions.

Knowing someone else has it worse is no consolation when your own child is in distress, your partner is being an ass irritating (or worse) or you have an elderly relative whose physical or mental health is deteriorating because of lack of access to their normal activities. All in addition to your own stresses in coping.

These threads exist to support each other and, yes, to grumble about the restrictions - without being shut down because of ONE risk out of the many we face each day.

We have, between us, a full span of how necessary each restriction is but, agree with them or not, we all comply except for minor infractions as discussed.

We are against scaremongering by mainstream media, contradictory statements from the government and debate and alternative viewpoints being shut down.

We are happy for anyone to come on 'our' thread to discuss their and our views and have a rational and respectful discussion.

Anyone coming on to say 'I'm right, you're wrong' is not welcome.

I hope you stay active on this thread @theReluctantPhoenix as I have found your comments really useful!

That cat thread is gold. Thanks for reminding me!

Did you know unspayed female cats are called queens? Also, a group of cats is a glaring

DKitty currently on DH's desk stepping on his keyboard to get to the window. She is a curtain twitcher Smile.

To all those struggling 💐💐 🍷🍷🍷 🍰🍰🍰🍰 ☕☕☕ 🛏🛏🛏 and anything else that gets you through the day.

I have always felt there is a lot of truth in the saying "The darkest hour is just before dawn" and I really believe we are at that point now. The end is in sight BUT there is still not a concrete end that we can set our sights on.

When I was doing my nurse training, way back in the early 70s, we used to do blocks of nights - 3 months at a time working 10 on and 6 off. The hardest nights were 8 and 9. By night 8 we were shattered and the end seemed out of sight, night 9 was even worse but the final one was not so bad. Also, each night, 4am to 6am were killers but after that it was downhill until home and bed.

We will get there - and these threads will continue to help.

Luckily the People writing the laws want to allow themselves leeway, as Johnson et al are aware that any infringement would be headlines.

That means that there are still lots of things we can do.

I also don’t think two elderly lonely vaccinated friends meeting for a cup of tea is worthy of an armed assault squad (unlike some mumsnetters seem to think justified!)

I did break the roolz last week. I saw two dear friends whilst out walking who I had not seen since last summer. They have both had Covid (one asymptomatic one symptomatic and both tested positive) recovered by end of January, so absolutely safe to hug as much as I could get away with. It was so good to feel that human contact.

Worldgonecrazy · 11/02/2021 15:54

Ps. The two friends are married to each other so the only tools break was hugging them 😍

Taswama · 11/02/2021 17:16

Checking in with you lovely ladies.
I can confess I met a friend AND her kids at a local playground this week. It would have been unfair to leave them at home in front of more screens when she was going out, and she needed some adult conversation.

LadyCounterblast · 11/02/2021 17:35

Checking in, hello all.

Flowers and Wine for all what wants 'em.

Nanny I agree with your 'hour darkest before the dawn' observation, it feels very much like that to me as well.

Recycledblonde · 11/02/2021 17:46

Well, I’ve broken the rules today. Went to see my sons new flat and met his gf for the first time, hugged him and they both showed me round. Was lovely to see him. We then went to see a friend of ours, had coffee with him, his wife and adult daughter. They have previously been very law abiding but they now say they are utterly fed up of everything and have seen quite a few friends in the last couple of weeks. Feel so much better for having some other human contact apart from my family.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 11/02/2021 17:48

@starfish88
Oooooo I love a festival! Was I there?

Iheartmysmart · 11/02/2021 17:51

I’ve broken the rules as well today! Met up indoors for a coffee with a couple of friends. They both live alone and work from home, the only other person I really see is DS when he’s not at his dad’s so we figured we probably aren’t a huge risk to each other. It was so nice to sit in the warm and gave a chat.

TheOrchidKiller · 11/02/2021 18:00

@NannyGythaOgg
Thank you for your wise & kind words (& I agree that 4-6am is the worst time to be awake).

@DrRamsesEmerson
Hold on. Flowers

We each feel what we feel about the situation, irrespective of what others might be feeling.

A glaring of cats, eh? Didn't know that, but it sounds about right. I love cats but a gang of them freaks me out. There was a Cravendale ad with a bunch of them & I found it unsettling. (Mine has been quiet for a bit, off to see what its plotting...)

oldnormalplease · 11/02/2021 18:05

I came across my first Dementors in the wild today! I was in a supermarket and they were berating the assistant at the till for serving someone who wasn't wearing a mask. The assistant said he understood their POV but the maskless person might have a hidden disability etc. Sadly it wasn't until I was halfway home that it occurred to me that they were in 'the wrong' by being in the shop together, instead of just one of them doing the shopping for the household. But then the rules always apply to other people, don't they?

amicissimma · 11/02/2021 18:18
@tatutata,

I am afraid it isn’t really. The fact that it failed to prevent mild disease in the young volunteers is strong evidence that it has achieved vaccine escape.

We might hope that it prevents serious disease but the probability would lie in the other direction.

South Africa is going to sell its AZ vaccine. They would not be doing this without good reason.
"The fact that it failed to prevent mild disease in the young volunteers is strong evidence that is has achieved vaccine escape."

It really isn't. It is only evidence that it failed to prevent mild disease in a small number - 19 - of young volunteers. The sample size was 2000 and 20 who got the placebo caught Covid. It says nothing about the effect of the vaccine on the (presumably, if vaccine versus placebo was 50-50) 981 other people who were vaccinated. It tells us nothing about the effect of the vaccine on serious disease. It tells nothing about the effect of the vaccine on the older population, who are most at risk from Covid. The trial has not been peer reviewed.

At best, this trial suggests that there may be some reduction in protection against mild disease in young people from the South African variant. It does not provide evidence of all sorts of things that it didn't even study, such as the effect on severe disease or in old people.

Be aware that, as Mumsnet says, "Mumsnet has not checked the qualifications of anyone posting here." Before you allow yourself to be upset by what someone posts, it's a good idea to critically check the original source.

Bollss · 11/02/2021 18:19

Honestly feel at breaking point today. Ds is isolating so I'm working from home and home schooling. It happens to be the worst possible time work wise (of course!) And I just no longer believe this will end.

I really don't know how to carry on.

DWPmisery1972 · 11/02/2021 18:21

Checking in, I’ve missed loads! Had lots of phone shit today that’s completely drained me (arse hole school/witness care/eating disorder clinic/eating disorder helpline) so I’m feckin exhausted today. Kids gone to their dads so I can breathe... I feel bad that I haven’t been able to take them out because of my injury so I hope they can run off some steam there. DS1(5) interim report from 1 term was really bad and I’ve gone ape at the school (even his grandad (my FIL) and his dad (my dick head ex) agree) - it’s like a report that’s not about my child at all! School not interested so I’m pissed off but it’s just more crap to worry about. The kid is 5 fgs. School for 1 term. Argh. Court coming up soon and I’m feeding the pressure and it’s making my eating disorder rear it’s ugly Head, and I’ve had tummy problems for 3 days, I don’t know if it’s this medication or what. But I’m alive, so that’s something I suppose.

DWPmisery1972 · 11/02/2021 18:24

@TrustTheGeneGenie I feel you. If my father in law hadnt come and taken the kids from me earlier I think I would have completely lost it. I’ve managed to keep it bubbling at a low rage but I was on the edge of losing my shit and just ... I don’t even know. Probably cause myself more injury 😂 idiot I am.

chocolatesweets · 11/02/2021 18:39

@TrustTheGeneGenie there's a breaking point for things like this. It will end. Might not be soon but it will end.

chocolatesweets · 11/02/2021 18:40

And also I really feel you. I feel like I'm in prison.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 11/02/2021 18:47

@trustthegenegenie hang on in there. It really can't last forever. Flowers

The numbers dropped significantly again today. The jabs are going well.

My DH has been told by his head that they are expecting an announcement re schools before Boris publishes his road map on the w/c 22 Feb. Who knows if there is much in that, but she has previously been on the money via her various contacts in the Dep of Ed. He is desperate to be back in the building but reckons if it is announced Fri or Mon it will screw his half term.

Buzzinwithbez · 11/02/2021 19:23

Latest from Tim Spector is that we would be at very low June 2020 levels by March 8th if the trends continue. He's asking where's the plan for releasing restrictions.
Excellent. I am bloody pleased to hear it.
smallandimperfectlyformed · 11/02/2021 19:38

Good luck with Sanctuary MercyBooth. I am sorry TrustTheGeneGenie that your son has to isolate and you have to work at the same time, that's really hard. DWPMisery1972 you are having such a difficult time at the moment, I am glad that you are getting some respite. I should be happier really as I am getting the vaccination tomorrow and I can't really see a way out of this without a sizeable proportion of people being vaccinated. However I feel guilty that I am getting it when I can stay at home for ages but people who have to go to work (like my friend's daughter who is a 1-1 at a school with an autistic child who is unable to understand social distancing) can't. Just sick and tired of everything.

DWPmisery1972 · 11/02/2021 20:04

@DrRamsesEmerson you’re not going anywhere young lady, you’re too important to all of us and to so many others. This is all bollocks but you’ve got it in you. I know you have. Flowers

@starfish88 I hope I was at the festival! I love a dance and lager in a plastic pint cup! 🎉

I should probably clean the house... meh.

Managed to get a click and collect for tomorrow for heavy stuff so I don’t have to Carry it home (squash, cat food etc)

As far as a ‘glaring’ of cats is concerned, that’s what I get whenever I use the toilet- all 6 of them getting a good look!! Creepy little beggars.
