How naff are private plates?

I know... I'm a bit sad, but I have seen a set of car plates that are perfect for my name..and I want them. But I don't drive a porche or anything posh..just my dear little Panda 4x4....

If you want it, get it. Who cares what anyone else thinks.

I just couldn’t afford the one I wanted!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 10/02/2021 23:06

Each to their own but I don't really see the point of them, seems like an overpriced way of showing off

Zampa · 10/02/2021 23:06

If it makes you happy, go for it!

Fauvist · 10/02/2021 23:07

They are awful. Having said that, if you like them why care what anyone else thinks? Go for it.

Ilovelove · 10/02/2021 23:13

I like them and I think you can pass off the juxtaposition of a private license on a panda as a fabulous and ironic nod to our materialistic culture or something like that.

Or could just get them and love them!

DenisetheMenace · 10/02/2021 23:15

I hate them but I’m not you so do what makes you happy.

DamnShesaSexyChick · 10/02/2021 23:16

I love mine.

Londonisburningg · 10/02/2021 23:18

Love them. DP has a set, I’m planning to get my own too.

Have had people call DPs plates “naff”/“show off-y” then they went and got their own a few months laterHmm

AIMD · 10/02/2021 23:20

Very naff.
But if you like them embrace the naff.

Redglitter · 10/02/2021 23:20

I bought a set last summer. Naff or not I love them. If you want them buy them

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 10/02/2021 23:21

I would say they wouldn't look out of place on a 4 by 4...

Wtfdidwedo · 10/02/2021 23:21

I thought they were only handed out with white Range Rovers. That's the trend around here anyway.

OppsUpsSide · 10/02/2021 23:22

Lots of people have them on all sorts of vehicles, if you want them get them.

Oops got my terms muddled. Ignore me completely! D'oh.

Go for what you like :)

SSCCLL · 10/02/2021 23:24

I love mine on my nice(ish) car. Go for it!

PickAChew · 10/02/2021 23:26

I'm only even half way impressed if they're not some vague, in fact very bad, approximation of your name - which, face it, most are.

SnarkyBag · 10/02/2021 23:29

Oh god they’re awful IMO. It’s like literally throwing money away. I just don’t understand the purpose of them I really don’t.

cerealcrunch · 10/02/2021 23:30

I have private plates, as do most people I know. I don't care if people think they're naff. Also drive a certain white 4x4 and don't care what people think about that either.

ginghamstarfish · 10/02/2021 23:30

Naff, but each to their own.

RumJerrySailorRum · 10/02/2021 23:34

Your car is a lot less likely to be cloned if you have a private plate.

Mine is currently on retention and I weirdly miss it.
Can't wait to have a car again and the plate back on.

Chickydoo · 10/02/2021 23:41

I can't stand them. Just can't see the point. The one thing that really puts me off is you can't go anywhere incognito. DH has personalised plates. He told me was going Christmas shopping .... hmm his car was clearly parked on the road outside his mates. A girlfriend told me she was seeing her mum, her car was parked outside a beauty salon. You just can't hide with chicky123 or similar plastered on the front (and back) of your car.
It's also a bit too try hard or 'look at me' for my taste.

SoupDragon · 10/02/2021 23:42

I'm certain there are things the "naff" posters spend money on that I think are akin to throwing money away and unspeakably naff. Who cares?

Thank god we aren't all little identical sheep. How dull would that be?

noblegreenk · 10/02/2021 23:46

If you want them then get them.

I don't care much for them. I personally find them tacky, self indulgent and a total waste of money. I also think there's certain people who buy them in an attempt to disguise the age of their vehicle.

I work with someone who is a terrible driver and she has personal plates. So many people at work have commented on what an awful driver she is because they see her driving about and recognise her car as the plates are distinctive.

To be fair the OP did ask what people think. I’d never be so rude as to tell the many people I know with them that I think they are naff. But I think that’s the point they’re so common now that it almost defeats the object.
