How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

@boredwiththeoldname why would another sausage be greed, but another portion of carbs/fat (more mash, bread and butter) not?

I'm not being arsey, just fascinated

Depends on the sausage. 2/3 fat ones but 4 thin ones!

Youvegotafriendinme · 10/02/2021 17:47

DH will eat 4 (would eat more but there isn’t more) Ds is 4 and will eat 2 and I will have 2. I could eat 3 but give the extra one to DS and I just have extra mash and vegetables

Two for adults and children over about 9 years.Three for teen boys possibly, mine still only has two but he doesn't have a big appetite and is only 5ft 5. Always three veg not including potato.

HavelockVetinari · 10/02/2021 17:48

I have 2, DS has 1 (he's 3) and DH has 4.

ChronicallyCurious · 10/02/2021 17:49

2 (vegan sausages) for me and 4 for DP.

I have to really watch myself because I could easily eat the same portions as DP but he struggles to gain weight and loses it soooo easily so I give him big portions. When we first moved in together I didn’t realise and gained a stone in a month 😂

TheMoth · 10/02/2021 17:49

2 veggie ones. Dh might have 3.

Megan2018 · 10/02/2021 17:49

We buy expensive meat- we have 3 each, DD is limited to 1-1.5 (she’s only 17 months and adores sausages but I worry about salt so ration it. She’d eat 4 given the chance).
I could easily eat 6 tbh but I like my food (not fat though surprisingly!)

bigbluebus · 10/02/2021 17:49

We (me, DH & DS 24) had sausages, baked potato and veg last night. There were 6 sausages in the pack from the local farm shop so we had 2 each. We were all satisfied with that as a meal ( and we like our food!)

SpaceRaiders · 10/02/2021 17:49

I could only manage 2. Dc 9 & 6 would have 2. Many and extra half each at a push. Surely you bulk out your meal with veg if you’re hungry enough for 5/6 sausages! Even with the best sausages, the amount of fat, processed meat and salt content would just be to too much for one meal.

FellowFlipFlop · 10/02/2021 17:50

I love these threads, there are always people going "I couldn't POSSIBLY eat more than ONE" implying that anyone who eats 3 sausages is somehow wrong. Yeah we get it, you're proper dainty.

I have 3 sometimes 4 but only like Richmond sausages so I don't have them often

BerniesMittens · 10/02/2021 17:50

We have two each. Leaves one each for breakfast with an egg. Smile

AlwaysLatte · 10/02/2021 17:50

DH and DS13 have 3 each, DS10 and me have 2 each, dog always has one :-) I usually do stuffing and roast vegetables/garlic with it, and mashed potatoes.

Lorw · 10/02/2021 17:50

When I do sausage and mash for the boys I tend to make 2 each for 11 and 5 yo and 1 for 3yo. They don’t eat veg at all though so probably do a bit more mash. 😊

irregularegular · 10/02/2021 17:50
  1. Always 2. Depending on numbers there might be spares and my 17 year old might have a 3rd, but I'd only serve 2 initially. I'd otherwise I'd save spares for breakfast/lunch.

Really can't imagine serving 4 to everyone!! I know pub lunches often serve 3 for and adult bangers and mash and that seems an awful lot.

TheQueef · 10/02/2021 17:51

My favourite tea is 3 sausage, 2 eggs and a few chips for dipping.
You need 3 sausage to use up two yolks or you'd need bread and butter too Hmm

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 10/02/2021 17:51

It's currently 3for an adult, 2 for a child here.

We alternate between buying packs of 8&12 and freeze the spare pair for when he buy an 8 pack.

HideTanner · 10/02/2021 17:52

Four for me thanks

MaverickDanger · 10/02/2021 17:52

I have two, DH would have 3/4 depending on size of the pack - if there’s 8, he’d have 3, if 6 he’d have 4.

HideTanner · 10/02/2021 17:52

But I wouldn't have the mash.

AubergineDream · 10/02/2021 17:52

3 chipolatas, 2 fat sausages. 1 each for the little DC (with an extra one if they want it, usually one one of them does)

Blessex · 10/02/2021 17:53

My DS (14) would easily eat 4 and more if he could. Skinny as a rake.

blackteaplease · 10/02/2021 17:53

I get sausages from the butcher. 3 fat ones for me and dh, the kids older kids get 2.5 chipolatas and the youngest gets 1 chipolata.

Marmite27 · 10/02/2021 17:53

@Bcnamechanger

Two usually, but I know it's tight. BUT dteen boys and DH eat two kilos of potatoes with them. Buy 2*6 packets and if there are leftovers they get cold sausage sandwiches - the choose to have 2 so they get more cold later.
2 kilos Confused for how many people?
FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 10/02/2021 17:54

I usually buy sausages in packs of six. I will have two, DD (age 4.5) will have one. DH is vegetarian so doesn't eat them. We put the three spare in the freezer for next time.
