How many sausages per person with bangers and mash? Are we a greedy family?

Bangers and mash for dinner tonight (I'm having soup because I'm trying to lose weight) and I was wondering what a normal portion looks like to other people? DH and my 16 and 18yo sons will eat at least 4 sausages each with a big pile of mash/peas/gravy. They would eat more sausages if there were more available! I remember when I was a child we were given 2 sausages each, but then I remember being very hungry as a child and meals often weren't generous enough (cup a soup and two slices of dry bread as dinner for a 9yo, for example).

So - how many sausages?

2 each here!

Aworldofmyown · 11/02/2021 15:11

Younger kids (12 and under) 1 sausage. Myself and teen boy have 2. DP has 3. There are a couple left if anyone wants another though or they are saved for sandwiches.
For those with portion issues I always serve up less and we go back for more if needed. Works for us. Also I try to bulk with veg rather than meat.

"Have I missed anything?"

Has anyone mentioned their husband having a "very physical job" so burns off a million calories per second just be existing and needs an entire roasted hog for dinner every night?

Cycling. He also cycles.
Bumpsadaisie · 11/02/2021 15:12

In our house three for dh and two for me and kids.

Wrong! He “has a hobby that would be too outing” to specify.

Lots of people mentioning that it’s ok to eat double portions or more because they are very slim. Have you heard of visceral fat? It is fat that wraps around your organs and you can have dangerous amounts of it despite being slim. Being a healthy weight does not necessarily mean everything is good below the surface.

I go by the rough guideline of making half our plates vegetables, a quarter carbs and a quarter protein. If we had 4 sausages each that would be more like half the plate!

its often directed by how many is in the pack and family size equals the amount eaten, we can't get them in smaller than 6 pack for 2 of us

rawalpindithelabrador · 11/02/2021 16:33

@FeckinCat

The whole family gathers around a single chipolata and take turns sniffing at it.

No more than two sniffs in one sitting though. We wouldn't want to be greedy.

Then we put the chipolata back into the fridge so that we can sniff it for lunch the following day.

And then tuck into a massive salad with unlimited veggies.

But you can freeze 5 and then have one between you for dinner.

Confused If you have a fridge the you could choose to eat the leftovers another day (I find you need fewer chopped up with pasta than when having them whole). If you have a freezer you could put the spares in there and accumulate another meal after a couple of packets - this is what we do.
TriflePudding · 11/02/2021 16:47

Haha some of you are brilliant!

This really is a perfect example of bonkers mumsnet food threads!

Although I’m very concerned no one has mentioned the carb content in mash and veggies though .....

I keep thinking of the episode of silicon valley where Laurie has a panic attack and throws up at work and later says "immediately after your departure I ate two egg whites and a green bean and regained my composure"

Exhausteddog · 11/02/2021 16:56

@TriflePudding

I think you'll have to start a new post about evil carbs. Although I imagine sweet potato mash or cauliflower mash might be acceptable to the food police...?
Judging by your user name I imagine you are troughing desserts like no ones business and causing enormous strain on the NHS when you should be quite content with a couple of grapes, and a tangerine st Christmas!Grin

4... of the 50% less fat ones from Aldi (1 and a half syns each on slimming world). Or the syn free SW ones.
Love bangers and mash. And Hmm at all the judgey comments to folk who eat 4

mmgirish · 11/02/2021 17:33

My 9 year old would easily have 4 sausages with a meal like that. He'd have more if you cooked more.

CableknitSweaters · 11/02/2021 17:33

2 each but a few spare if anyone is still hungry afterwards. 9 times out of 10, 2 is enough and I use the leftover sausages for sandwiches the next day.

When I do sausages, peas and mash I always put them into a giant Yorkshire pudding with onion gravy so maybe the Yorkshire pudding makes it more substantial and filling. Could you try that?

torkandgrunt · 11/02/2021 17:35

So refreshing to see a serious, meaningful post on Mumsnet, instead of all the drivel about nasty neighbours. churlish children and impossible in-laws. Perhaps we could start to discuss the correct serving temperature for Liebfraumilch . . ?

MollyMinniesMum · 11/02/2021 17:35

2 each

smoothieooo · 11/02/2021 17:38

2 Heck or Jolly Hog sausages each for me and DS(22) then the one each left over gets warmed up to go with next day's bacon and eggs! I could easily wolf down 3 but am a greedy bastardo!

tommyhoundmum · 11/02/2021 17:39

Two each for us. We have Naked Glory which are delicious veggie ones.

smoothieooo · 11/02/2021 17:41

Seychelles98 I promise you I got 4 meals out of my 3 quid chicken but only for 2 of us. Roast on Sunday, Spanish omelette on Monday, chicken sandwiches on Tuesday and the rest went into a bean stew yesterday! Frigging sick of chicken today!
