I used to go a lot. It had some really good stuff. However since the pandemic I've only been a handful of times - too many people in there, didn't feel safe.

Whatwouldscullydo · 01/02/2021 21:17

IronNeonClasp · 01/02/2021 21:17

I ♥️ Lidl. Have felt really safe shopping there since Covid began. Fruit and veg is fresh and lasts. Great selection of food and substitutes (which are basically the same). I love their finest Yorkshire puddings but so does everyone else as they sell out of them really quickly and don't have them again for weeks Grin

Ginfordinner · 01/02/2021 21:19

@Bookaholic73

I still hate the food at Lidl Grin
All of it? Even the branded items? Their fresh bakery goods are really nice. Lidl and the Co-op have the same fresh baked goods supplier.
LadyPoison · 01/02/2021 21:20

Our local one just isn't a pleasant shopping experience. The shop is untidy and cluttered and the queues are always long. I don't know why they have 8 checkouts I've never seen more than 2 open and more often than not it's just the one.

I avoid it as much as I can other than for one product that I couldn't get elsewhere but having now found another stockist I don't need to go back.

user47000000000 · 01/02/2021 21:20

You do know awards are mostly paid for. Like when all the P&G brands used to win awards from mumsnet... but they were also one of their biggest advertisers.

I like Lidl and think it’s good value but awards don’t mean a thing

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 01/02/2021 21:20

If I were going on a bus to avoid the microscopic Lidl nearest to us and go to the larger one (seeing as the smaller one never has any meat in it by the time I've finished work), I'd turn left at the bus stop to go to the Turkish Food Centre instead. Much, much better quality and cheaper/fresher fruit and vegetables, cheaper olive oil, cheaper pasta, cheaper spices and herbs (and a wider range), cheaper feta, better fresh bread, baklava (!), olives, etc.

It's not worth the effort for a pack of growing lettuce and three raw beetroots.

Chewbecca · 01/02/2021 21:21

But I don’t want to spend hours traipsing round 5 different shops and don’t want to go to a different shop each week, I prefer to know what’s there and I will stick to Waitrose, thanks. Winning an award makes no difference to my choice.

wendyleen · 01/02/2021 21:22

No, have shopped there in the past but far prefer Waitrose.

They're the most ethical of all the supermarkets and consistently win the Compassion in World Farming Awards beating 27 other retailers in Europe. That's more important to me than price.

OwningAllMyMistakes · 01/02/2021 21:24

I use Aldi,Lidl,Tesco,Sainsbury’s,Morrison’s food is food & supermarket clientele in one of the better more upmarket brands is a bit like subscribing to an exclusive dating site and finding the same clientele that are on POF.
supposedly better shopping clientele doesn’t make better people 😏

It’s not fleas. Vegetable fleas aren’t a thing. When I was a kid and veg came from the garden or local greengrocers it almost always had livestock...
StormcloakNord · 01/02/2021 21:26

I'm not a Lidl fan either 😬 lovely food but I can't abide the ridiculous queues! Just craziness. Quite like plodding round Tesco scanning all my shopping on the go and getting out without standing around for 20 mins!!

That's easy to say if you have money to spare.

Throughhistory · 01/02/2021 21:27

@Bookaholic73

I don’t look down my nose at Lidl or Aldi, or anyone who shops there.

But I find everything inedible, plus the bread products and fruit &veg goes bad really quickly.

Surely you don't find everything inedible Grin
StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 01/02/2021 21:29

I like their boxes rather than tinned beans lentils etc. Fit much better in my kitchen cupboard. Have got some bargains in the aisle of death and oh the christmas stuff! Quite like their frozen food too. If they had some good curry pastes and crushed ginger and garlic and naan Id be happy.

UnityUnited · 01/02/2021 21:29

I love seeing posh people in Aldi and Lidl buying wine.

FlatteredRhubardFool · 01/02/2021 21:29

I've never been in a Lidl. I can't tell if I'm missing out or not. There isn't one nearby anyway and they don't deliver so I'm unlikely to find out any time soon. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than go to Aldi. I can't stand the randomness or the checkout system and all the fruit and veg was off so quickly when my now exH insisted on shopping there.

Biscoffaddict · 01/02/2021 21:31

Lidl is shit. Aldi is far superior.

Bananabuddy3 · 01/02/2021 21:31

I love Lidl, always use it! But there’s definitely some kinds of food which I don’t like from there! I always stick up when they have the random brands.....

BillywigSting · 01/02/2021 21:32

Since I moved away from my previously local lidl and its deadly bakery I have lost over a stone.

Lidls bread (and cakes and pastries and cookies) are bloody lovely and I will die on that hill. I have never noticed them being short dated because they always get scoffed before they have half a chance to go off.

ConeHat · 01/02/2021 21:33

I think.i prefer Aldi to Lidl but thinking about it, our Aldi seem to be constantly stocking shelves and I always feel in the way. It adds to the crazed panic vibe of budget shops. I have been doing click and collect with Tesco and compared the prices with Tesco for my items. Only a few things was cheaper in Aldi. So I only go once in a while now to stock up on those.

Lidl isnt as manic in comparison but as we enlarge family I hate the checkout set up. I would never buy more than a small shop. Ballache holding the queue up.

On balance it must be fine if it's close and you can go a few times a week. But it's not the same for a weekly big shop for me personally.

wendyleen · 01/02/2021 21:39

@Sphagnum

We're not rolling in it. Their offers are very good and I buy carefully. I also buy a lot of yellow stickered items. It's more egg and chips than quails eggs and caviar at Wendyleen Towers!

DNHandTNS · 01/02/2021 21:42

Lidl steak is amazing! Even cooked on a barbecue ( back in the summer obs)

DenisetheMenace · 01/02/2021 21:44

@Denisethemenance I popped into Lidl the other day and bought a free-range chicken. It was really very good. Made a roast then stock from the bones and had soup the following day. I will get one again.“

Yes, she made us a curry on our last (long ago 🥺) visit and the chicken was so good our 17 year old said so! She also raves about their extra large free range eggs.

UnityUnited · 01/02/2021 21:46

My teenage dc were also impressed with the free-range chicken. It must be good!
