They have got a surprising amount going for them! Smile

Much prefer Aldi!

GiantKitten · 01/02/2021 20:18

To answer a few questions...
No, I don’t work for them (I’m nearly 70, I don’t work for anybody!)
And I don’t care where anybody shops, but I know there are people here who won’t even contemplate shopping at Lidl/Aldi, and I think they’re misjudging and missing out.
We have Tesco, Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Aldi & Booths here and I shop at them all, plus Waitrose online and Ocado, plus an occasional trip to Asda & Morrison’s, so I’m not judging anybody!
But equally I think they all have their uses and don’t dismiss any of them smile]

Team Lidl all the way, especially Lidl Caerphilly.
It is always quiet, hardly any queues, fantastic bakery, well-stocked shelves, superb meat and has a cracking view of Caerphilly Mountain.

AdultHumanFemale · 01/02/2021 20:19

I love my local Lidl.
Before DC1 was born, I would never have set foot in one; strictly Sainsbury's, Waitrose and high street butcher, greengrocer and fishmonger.
Still do the latter, but Lidl is the only supermarket I visit now.

@Yogaposer

"Queues that don't look like something from Soviet Russia"..... This had me giggling because it's so true! Grin
I genuinely cannot cope with the queues in Lidl and Aldi and I just don't get why people put up with it.

They just remind me of Kwik Save and Safeway from my youth. Miserable supermarkets with boxes on floor and No Frills.

00100001 · 01/02/2021 20:20

I prefer Aldi on the whole. Better selection of higher quality food. For example, you can't get organic eggs, whole nut butter, organic oats etc at Lidl.

Although I will occasionally go to Lidl, for their bakery and their alpinefest frozen pretzels 😋

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 01/02/2021 20:20

I don't mind their food but Lidl's and Aldi's customer service in my experience is always shocking.
I worked in a supermarket for years and was trained to treat customers with manners and respect which l always did but in those two shops they rush you through, no customer care at all and l come out feeling stressed. Aldi is def cheaper l think so l will go occasionally but l am more of a Tesco kinda girl.

oakleaffy · 01/02/2021 20:20

@ChetChet

Team Lidl too. Some things in Aldi are very good. But Lidl is far better.
I did a shop at Aldi, and to be honest, the sausages weren't so good, I gave the left over ones to the foxes.

Meat {If one is a meat eater} is much better when it has been reared humanely.

The fruit and yoghurts were very reasonable. ..the red grapes were excellent..Crispy and sweet.

I love Waitrose, but it isn't especially cheap.

I'll give Lidl a go, but these shops are so bright...Waitrose is just so familiar.

Qwick Save probably had the most depressing shops ever, but were very cheap for branded goods.

CoronaIsWatching · 01/02/2021 20:21

Not a fan, never know what's going to be in stock and their cut flowers last about 2 days. Prefer paying a few quid more and going to Morrison's.

echt · 01/02/2021 20:21

There are no Lidls in Australia, and Aldi had to struggle to get a foot hold against the big supermarkets who tried to block them. Also seen as very common by some, though that appears to have gone.

Their service is excellent, especially now Covid distancing has reduced the scrum. Good range of fresh foods too, and they make a massive effort to ensure it's Australian.

There must be something Covidly up with imports as the very lovely Pave and Brique soft cheeses from France have been off the shelves for months.Sad

saraclara · 01/02/2021 20:23

My ideal is an Aldi with a Lidl bakery.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 01/02/2021 20:23

@RickiTarr

Absolutely shit for anybody mobility impaired, though. I think they only want young and athletic customers. Fuck ‘em.
Yep - it's the retail Hunger Games Wink. I CBA.

I don't even think the queues move that much faster than normal supermarkets. I assume it's some weird marketing strategy to convince us that we are getting good value because the service is shit (am not blaming the till staff - I know they have to do it).

It has worked for them for a decade, but I think they're going to start losing out to Amazon, Morrisons home delivery, and other price-driven delivery services. Why go to Aldi/Lidl and have a crap experience every time at the till, when you can get stuff home-delivered for a similar price?

Whoopsmahoot · 01/02/2021 20:23

Some things great, some not so 🤷‍♂️

pocketwarm · 01/02/2021 20:24

Love Lidl! However, haven’t been for months as the scan-it-yourself-and-put-it-straight-in-your-bag at Sainsbury’s is more appealing, health-wise at the moment. The less time I have to spend inside a supermarket, the better. Miss the lower shopping bill but sucking up spending a bit more to do my shopping in half the time.

Woodlandbelle · 01/02/2021 20:25

I'm a big lidl fan. The staff at our local store are outstanding. The produce is great and huge savings. I am a fan of the middle of lidl too. Also bought school uniform there last year. Big thumbs up from me.

QueenOfLabradors · 01/02/2021 20:25

In normal times I do Lidl once a fortnight, recently it's been once every six weeks instead. All part of going to a slightly larger shopping place than my own very small market town that has a couple of very large gaps in provision. It's just about justifiable as 'local' in rural terms. I'm not sure I want to go again soon though, there seemed to be no effort to manage the internal queues. Irritating as I really like a lot of Lidl stuff.

thetinselbadge · 01/02/2021 20:25

I was a real Lidl fan, I always thought the meat was better quality than Aldi but recently I've had off meat almost every week. Im not saving money if I'm putting meat in the bin every week am I? I've started shopping at Sainsbury's, it's more money but at least it's all edible and I'm not having to nip to the coop to pay top whack for whatever meal item we are now missing. Also I'm convinced that their frozen cod isn't actually cod.

I'd say it's great for cleaning stuff, baking stuff, non perishables, nappies are great.

I love Lidl... put a full trolley through the till on Saturday and was over the moon when it all came to less than £45! Was expecting it to be a lot higher after shopping at Tesco for the past few shops.

ScreamingBeans · 01/02/2021 20:27

Is there anyone who looks down their noses at Lidl? I thought it was the height of middle class chic.

I think Aldi is way better than lidl! Loads more choice for vegans / veggies at Aldi. Better quality products. However, Lidl is ok.

mechanicalwonder · 01/02/2021 20:29

No it doesn't

Yes, it's a shame as I only shop whre you can 'scan and shop' now as there's no way I'm going pack to unloading and reloading at the checkout.

Sorry, Aldi gal here. Lidl’s “fresh” fruit and veg is pretty manky.
