I picked up some Italian olive oil in Lidl. It was 2 or 3 pounds more expensive than their normal olive oil. It was wrapped in gold paper and once I took the paper off, it was just a glass bottle with no label!

I thought I paid extra just for the shiny wrapping (I am easily pleased 😃). But then I tasted the oil. D.I.V.I.N.E
In salsa, on salads, in dips. Anything with it drizzled on top tastes luscious. It is my preciousss 😂

rattlemehearties · 01/02/2021 20:35

I love Lidl but only been in once since the pandemic started because it's full of idiots who walk/lean in front and don't social distance. Plus the queues mean even more time indoors! Really miss it. But I'm a snob and would rather not risk it.

2pinkginsplease · 01/02/2021 20:36

When Lidl close t us opened I went in and couldn’t see past the non branded stuff but we persevered and do our weekly shop there. Meat is lovely, the fruit and veg is good , the only thing we don’t like is their cereal.

We have halved our weekly food bill from shopping in Sainsbury’s to Lidl. I can’t say the staff are the best eg grumpy, looking at their phones while on checkout etc but the prices are good and the food is a good standard too.

“ It is my preciousss 😂“

🤣🤣🤣

(Btw, noticing your name. How are you finding it so far? Grin)

Not a hope in hell, I'm not setting foot in the place until it doesn't resemble Oxford Street on the last hour of trading before Xmas.

AliasGrape · 01/02/2021 20:37

I prefer Aldi on the whole. Better selection of higher quality food. For example, you can't get organic eggs, whole nut butter, organic oats etc at Lidl

DH got organic eggs and whole nut (almond) butter from our local Lidl last week.

I do love Aldi though, especially their fresh vegetarian range like the beetroot burgers.

Snorlaxx · 01/02/2021 20:37

Their fruit is shite and they never have enough checkouts open.

I like their bakery and their cold meats but I don't go in that often even though it's literally just accross the road.

I don't think its a case of "looking down your nose" at them but people have different preferences. I'm happy to spend more at Sainsbury's for the convenience of having everything under one roof and more or less never having to queue at a checkout.

@DenisetheMenace, thanks for asking. Finding the year getting better each day. Longer daylight and slightly more warmth. I can almost smell Spring! 😊.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/02/2021 20:39

Hate Lidl but went there today- not a patch on Aldi

LBunz · 01/02/2021 20:40

Love Lidl! The bakery alone is top notch.

Aldi win for us at the mo as they do click and collect so reduces the need to be inside.

Quornflakegirl · 01/02/2021 20:40

I don't believe cheap food can be ethically sound, you get what you pay for. We are by no means well off but we don't shop in Lidl. There are reasons their food is cheap. Lidl don't have magical farms where people and animals are treated well AND still manage cheap prices.

LizFlowers · 01/02/2021 20:41

Lidl is good! I used to like going there sometimes but I don't have one nearby. It was always interesting (& I never find shopping interesting).

I felt exactly the same this morning! Out to the garage for a paint brush and the air smelt (smelled? Never did know) so fresh.

MessAllOver · 01/02/2021 20:41

Lidl are amazing for baked goods and children's waterproofs.

QueenPawPaws · 01/02/2021 20:41

I think everything has its advantages
I like Tesco because we don't have one so it's a novelty
Waitrose is too far away so again, novelty
Morrison's has a great bakery
Booths.. well if I won the lottery I would always shop there Grin

So what I mostly do at the minute is shop at sainsburys online as I have priority delivery, but in between send someone to Lidl for milk/fruit/salad/veg because I don't see the difference. And it's cheaper than doing another £40 sainsburys shop

HexWitch · 01/02/2021 20:42

I love Lidl, they've been fab throughout lockdown and their food is lovely!

My mum is vegetarian, has been for 45 years. On a tight budget, she cooks meat for my stepdad and swears by Lidl’s free range chicken 🤷‍♀️

supersplodge · 01/02/2021 20:43

I also go every Christmas for their 'deluxe' chocolate gingers - so delicious, and much cheaper than Thorntons! I was also recommended their crispy duck and pancakes frozen meals (yum) and best of all - their party food chicken satay skewers!

Otherwise - I do love their (and Aldi's) middle aisle bargains - you can get some great deals, but who has time to go twice a week and browse?

And in Spain, the Lidls have amazing fresh bread and bakery products! But over here they don't sell a basic fresh sandwich loaf, so no good for my everyday shopping.

And their fruit and veg is awful - it never lasts more than a day or two (except their sprouts on a stalk - which might be Christmas only, I don't know....)

So in summary, I could never do all my shopping there. Morrisons for fresh meat and Tescos or Morrisons for general shopping. I'm not posh enough for Waitrose......Grin.

RickiTarr · 01/02/2021 20:43

Yep - it's the retail Hunger Games wink. I CBA.

Brilliant! Grin

SkedaddIe · 01/02/2021 20:45

Lidl is alright but their products that come in for a week and then disappear are very very annoying.

They had an ice cream bar in wafer that was amazing. It was a multi pack of 4 of them, each the size of a bar of butter and wrapped in foil just like butter. They were huge and it literally felt like I was a kid again except that someone zapped them to make them into a man size portion. I wasted several trips to Lidl never to see it again.

That one packet I managed to get was probably the best weekend of my whole year.

VinylDetective · 01/02/2021 20:45

Aldi gets my vote. I just hurl everything back in the trolley and pack the bags in the car boot.

But Booths - God, I love Booths, it makes Waitrose look like Lidl.

UnityUnited · 01/02/2021 20:47

@Denisethemenance I popped into Lidl the other day and bought a free-range chicken. It was really very good. Made a roast then stock from the bones and had soup the following day. I will get one again.

QueenPawPaws · 01/02/2021 20:48

@VinylDetective Grin
The difference for me is I go to Lidl and spend £25 on two giant bags of shopping
Booths I go in for a browse, pick a few things and somehow leave £100 lighter Confused

Dahlietta · 01/02/2021 20:49

I live in an area so posh we don't even have a Lidl at which to look down our noses.

Booths is amazing. I used to shop there when I was in the north west, I haven't seen any down south though
