They have got a surprising amount going for them! Smile

We started going to Lidl when Waitrose stopped people shopping together back in the first lockdown. They have a seeded loaf of wholemeal bread that beats anything similar in Waitrose by a mile and their desserts are far better too IMO. I don't like their meat as much as Waitrose/Sainsburys, but their veggies are as good as Waitrose and often last longer. They don't quite have the variety if you want posh stuff like shitake mushrooms though. We would spend 20 or 30 quid less a week shopping there.

Bookaholic73 · 01/02/2021 19:56

I don’t look down my nose at Lidl or Aldi, or anyone who shops there.

But I find everything inedible, plus the bread products and fruit &veg goes bad really quickly.

ssd · 01/02/2021 19:56

I thought waitrose won the 2020 award for best supermarket?

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 01/02/2021 19:56

I’m not a fan, I’ve tried to like it but nah,it’s not for me all the veg was rotten.

RickiTarr · 01/02/2021 19:58

Absolutely shit for anybody mobility impaired, though. I think they only want young and athletic customers. Fuck ‘em.

Don’t worry. When bits of you start to go wrong, you get to graduate to Waitrose. Wink

I think the opposite. I think their dairy and deli is great and I like their baking and bakery products but really dislike their fresh produce.
If you don't eat it on the same day - it's useless.

And I can never get a full shop there so have to go somewhere else to finish off. But every time we go, we think we ought to use it more often as it is great value.

EmmanuelleMakro · 01/02/2021 20:05

Waitrose is more like Soviet Russia with the queuing outside. I prefer Lidl - never a queue

ShowOfHands · 01/02/2021 20:07

Probably depends where you live. Our local one seems fine though I don't shop there. I went in one in North Devon and it was appalling. Filthy, poorly stocked and bleak.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 01/02/2021 20:07

The Lidl near me is great. New, super clean, very accessible (lift and flat escalator), wide aisles, good food etc. Aldi for the candles though.

Probably because they don’t seem to care about social distancing, if they are anything like my local one!
Elllicam · 01/02/2021 20:09

I think Lidl is my favourite supermarket, I love the bakery, the cheese and the yoghurts. I have to drive by aldi, the coop, morrisons and Sainsbury’s to get there but the chocolate brownies are worth it.

OliRules · 01/02/2021 20:09

Ended up next to a Lidl literally for 8 months. Shopped my heart out in terms of fresh veggies and their surprise collection of items they put on sale.

Didn't like most of their processed items as they either had lots of sugar or had lots of preservatives.

Still was quite pleased picking out the best things and saving lots. Shame there isn't one close any longer.

H1978 · 01/02/2021 20:09

I’m not loyal to any supermarket but there are definitely some things I prefer at different stores. I love the Lidl bakery and their fishcakes are delicious but I’m not able to buy everything I would need on a weekly shop there.

If Lidl had scan as you shop I would consider it. I don’t know why they don’t do it as they clearly don’t really want any staff on a till for too long.

MrsB2019x · 01/02/2021 20:13

All of the Lidl’s in my area smell like black bin bags and that puts me off Confused

LynetteScavo · 01/02/2021 20:13

Nah, I'm Team Aldi.

Which is a shame because I drive past Lidl on my way to work.

LostFrog · 01/02/2021 20:13

I cannot shop in Lidl, it smells.
I’m not even sure what it smells OF, but it has a really distinctive smell and I don’t like it.

LostFrog · 01/02/2021 20:14

mrsb2019 x post!

Illy605 · 01/02/2021 20:15

I love a trip to Lidl.

But I’m scared to go since a member of staff chased me round the store shouting at me to leave because only one person from a family was allowed to shop at a time 😂😂😂

unlikelytobe · 01/02/2021 20:16

I've had some bad veg and dire meat products from Lidl. I still shop there a lot but only for certain things so have to top up elsewhere. You can't always get everything you're after but they'll sell crazy stuff like bongo drums. Weird!

BeautifulStar · 01/02/2021 20:16

This^^ - I got so sick of unpacking my fruit n veg at home and half of it being rotten I stopped going. There do often seem to be some erm...
“colourful” characters in the one nearest to me too. I like to shop in a supermarket where I’m unlikely to have a vest-wearing toothless hulk behind me breathing down my neck in these COVID times.
And why is there ALWAYS a milk spillage you have to veer around somewhere?

I just much prefer the experience of shopping/food at Waitrose and will gladly pay extra to not be so stressed!

CherryBlossomTree7 · 01/02/2021 20:16

I much much prefer Aldi to Lidl.

Whenever I've been to Lidl, it seems really messy and loads of gaps on the shelves (pre-Covid). Also doesn't seem half as much variety at Lidl compared to Aldi.
