Here's mine. Not weird but certainly wonderful. The panelled room is my fave.

Certainly wow and a little weird. Wondering about the heating bills though.

Seeing a lot of home gyms unsurprisingly.

lekkerkroketje · 02/02/2021 15:49

@allMiniTheMinx I read through all the guff trying to find out if the furniture was included, but I don't think it said. A famous poet used to live there, but it's been home to a book selling family in the last hundred or so years who I think are responsible for the furniture. It wouldn't be half so amazing without the furniture. Some of the box beds would be difficult to get out though! Most of the houses like that have been converted into offices, or the normal extremely expensive scandi style so it would be such a shame if it were gutted.

lekkerkroketje · 02/02/2021 16:03

Nope, I was wrong. It had 3 generations of booksellers who filled the place with shelves then left it empty and in bad state. It was bought by a musician in the 70s who restored and modernised it. He was born in the 30s, so I guess is too old or dead, hence the sale.

Saz12 · 02/02/2021 16:10

Very few of these would make me smile when I walked in the door. I mean, they’re impressive and tasteful (well, some of them are) but very few feel like actual homes. Where would you put the kids colouring in or the sentimental ornaments?

fairgame84 · 02/02/2021 17:28

I love this one. It looks bright and homely.
Unfortunately I don't have a helicopter to park in my garden.

lekkerkroketje the box bed is such a fab thing. I was smiling, in the dining room there is a table with lots of bottles...Grin boozy lunch followed by a nap in the box bed.

I think box beds are a late medieval idea, mainly in Europe? and we didn't have them in England. I'd love to find one.

@purrswhileheeats

I spotted this beauty recently:

The interior is a bit of a shock but makes sense when you read the blurb.

IMO it would be a perfect venue for the MN party - plenty of parking and its very own gin bar Grin

That looks like a house I'd enjoy visiting but I wouldn't want to live there! It doesn't look very homely.
PhillipPhillop · 02/02/2021 18:53

Surely some of those shots of the monochrome house are actually black and white photos? Completely depressing otherwise although with a but of decorating would be my sort of house.

lekkerkroketje · 02/02/2021 18:55

Box beds were a thing in Brittany in France right up to the early 20th century. They make sense in small drafty houses, partly because you can stack them like bunk beds. In NL, we've always had more open plan living than in the UK, so somewhere safe to store the baby or for a bit of privacy makes sense. Interesting the Dutch word is bedstede, which if the old meaning of bedstead was the same, suggests they were probably a thing in the UK too.

@BarbaraofSeville there’s nothing I’d change in that renovated chapel. It’s beautiful.

I want a box bed now, how cosy,

A modest rental property. The 4 poster bed is something to behold but the bathrooms give me the eebie jeebies.

@Covidcorvid

the thing is, they are very short.

At the time, people didn't lie down in bed in the same way. The beds were strung with, well, string! and they sagged in the middle and you were sort of half sitting reclining in the bed, with loads of pillows. So the beds are really short. Not really for adults today.

In Holland the beds were also in the living room, at least the guest bed was, so after dinner the guest went into the hole in the wall and went to sleep!

ketosavedmylife · 04/02/2021 10:29

@steppemum

Is it just me, or does anyone else find all these big elegant houses actually horrible? I like lots of different looks, modern, old, cosy, minimalist, but I am not drawn to most of these!

Sorry, maybe a bit harsh, but 90% of them I would hate to live in. Soulless, impersonal, old fashioned uptight furnishings (look like they are trying to be Buck House). Or modern empty, souless, acres of cold tiled floor.

Maybe it is because there are no personal possessions. Maybe because the rooms are huge, but as I imagine trying to live in them, I can't imagine cooking in the kitchen, laughing with friends round the table or curling up on the sofa.

The ones I like, are usually because they are different, quirky, or good views or even something as simple as there is a bookcase full of books!

Totally agree. The grandeur is a turn off, except if I was staying as a paying guest at a posh hotel for a wee while Grin. For everyday living, I'd like a bit more space than I have at home, but not so much that I am lost in a vast expanse of room. Also, the first thing I think about is the amount of cleaning needed to keep these vast properties and gardens in tip top condition. I would need to employ an army of cleaners!

I fell in love with this house a few months ago - not as grand as some here but I dream of a beautiful old conversion like this

It’s not the best area TBH. But I wouldn’t have let that put me off! It’s got big gates 😬

I’ve lived near there before and it was fine, but I’m sure that has an impact on the price.

purrswhileheeats · 04/02/2021 16:04

@welliguessitwouldbenice

Oh I used to live very close to that house!
