Poor DH shit himself then went to work

Literally.

DH made spaghetti bolognese for tea this evening using mince we bought from Lidl on Monday. We put in the freezer until today.

It was in date by several days when we bought it so shouldn't have gone off (especially as it was frozen immediately upon returning home) but it did smell a bit different when he was cooking it.

Within a couple of hours of eating it he's developed a bad stomach and had an accident on the way home from taking DSC back to their mums.

He showered and sorted himself out then left to go to work (nights)

He's now texting me saying he thinks he needs to come home as his stomach is very painful and he's on the verge of being sick.

If this was 24 hours later I'd be thinking he has food poisoning, can that take hold so quickly?

He hasn't eaten anything else.

I'm just bracing myself for the children to get the same..

I've NC'd for his sake as we have loved ones on here and he'd be mortified if they knew.

Why did he go to work?

Thatwentbadly · 29/01/2021 00:24

Poor thing.

He shouldn’t have gone to work to spread his germs around. It could be food poisoning but it could be from any source or a virus. Food poisoning can start within a few hours.

borntohula · 29/01/2021 00:24

Not sure but he shouldn't have gone into work ill? Hope he's better ASAP and the rest of you are all good.

Food poisoning can kick in fast!
That said, DH's first covid symptoms were gastric ones... he shat himself and vomitted for a week, god bless him. It was bloody awful.
I would actually get him tested.

eatlovemerry · 29/01/2021 00:33

Everyone I know who's had covid has had the runs before the cough....

Runkle · 29/01/2021 00:36

Yep, food poisoning can take hold very quickly. I ate seafood and was violently ill within an hour = food poisoning.
He really shouldn't have gone to work though Envy

Thesunrising · 29/01/2021 00:37

He needs to come home. He is not well enough to be at work. He needs to boil wash himself and sleep in a separate room & use separate towels, crockery & plenty of hand washing etc until whatever’s wrong has been flushed out of his system. I don’t suppose he’ll much fancy a meaty spag Bol in the near future either - toast, rice, bananas, apples to calm his digestive system.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/01/2021 00:40

I’m sure his work colleagues are really impressed he went to work to spread his germs about

Ultimatecougar · 29/01/2021 00:40

More likely to be Covid

Highfalutinlootin · 29/01/2021 00:44

Food poisoning actually happens within about 4 hours, not 24. It kicks in as soon as you've digested the food and it reaches your intestines. If you don't get sick for 24 hours, the cause is almost definitely NOT food poisoning. I've had the misfortune of having salmonella and several more minor instances of bacterial food poisoning when I lived abroad.

Best thing to do is hydrate, rest, and ensure he gets electrolytes. If he doesn't start getting better in a day or two, go to the hospital, as (very rarely) the bacterial load is high enough you need medication.

Gee78 · 29/01/2021 00:44

I told him not to bother going to work but be was adamant he needed to show his face, management aren't very accommodating when it comes to being off sick. He was sure it was the mince and not a gastro bug so thought he'd be fine.

He's on his way home now having spoken to the manager in person who can see he's suffering.

I'm going to make up a bed on the sofa so he can have the bed.

Poor sod. He's mortified about what happened when he was taking the kids home and to make matters worse had to tell his ex why he had to rush off rather than go over what the kids had eaten/done etc.

I've just tried to order him a covid test but he's not eligable because he doesn't have the three main symptoms.

We don't think it is that though. 99% sure it's the food.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/01/2021 00:47

Depending on what caused food poisoning that can be contagious too

borntohula · 29/01/2021 00:48

How the hell is it more likely to be covid!? 🤣

YukoandHiro · 29/01/2021 00:51

I laughed at that too @borntohula - man eats smelly meat and gets classic food positioning symptoms "MUST BE COVID!" People have lost the plot.

Just to reiterate what a previous poster said, if your DH doesn't feel better in 2-3 days, speak to a doctor. My DH got food poisoning on the way back from a holiday in Spain. He was so ill, I'd never seen him like that before. He ended up in a&e for dehydration and he needed an antibiotic drip for a campylobacter infection.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/01/2021 00:51

Because gastric problems are common with COVID.

Did anyone else eat the food?

callmeadoctor · 29/01/2021 00:59

Mildly amused at the poster saying "it must be covid" Did we never have any other illnesses before covid?

Gee78 · 29/01/2021 01:00

I had a couple of bites but barely anything, it didn't taste appetizing so I just had a sandwich.

DD and DSD had some of the spaghetti but none of the meat, DH is the only person who ate much of that.

If he develops any other symptoms we'll of course get tests but as it stands he isn't entitled to one based on symptoms.

Your kids will probably be fine then.
QueenOfPain · 29/01/2021 01:07

I’m currently covid positive. My very first symptoms last Friday were waking abruptly from sleep with severe lower abdo cramping and away up diarrhoea. My next symptom after that the following morning was a fever of 39.1, and a constant continuation of that diarrhoea but without pain. The respiratory stuff started much later.

The people mentioning covid aren’t wrong.

QueenOfPain · 29/01/2021 01:08

Dunno where “away up” came from, I think I meant awful.

Backbee · 29/01/2021 01:14

The most coincidental covid squits ever. FFS. I think he should stay indoors anyway for the time being, and obviously if he develops any further symptoms to test, but if he ate rank meat that no one else ate and is shitting himself in the street, I don't think we require a statistician to calculate the chances of it being food posoning vs covid.

Intrigued by the advice to 'boil wash himself'. I'm concerned this may not be textbook medical advice.
BitOfFun · 29/01/2021 01:19

Is boil washing yourself a bit like drinking disinfectant?

AliceMcK · 29/01/2021 01:25

Sounds very much like food poisoning, it can take hold very quickly. A fever is also a symptom of food poisoning, so is confusion so if he’s driving tell him to be careful.

If he’s got a fever obviously he needs to follow the covid protocol even if you know it’s food poisoning.
