Poor DH shit himself then went to work

Literally.

DH made spaghetti bolognese for tea this evening using mince we bought from Lidl on Monday. We put in the freezer until today.

It was in date by several days when we bought it so shouldn't have gone off (especially as it was frozen immediately upon returning home) but it did smell a bit different when he was cooking it.

Within a couple of hours of eating it he's developed a bad stomach and had an accident on the way home from taking DSC back to their mums.

He showered and sorted himself out then left to go to work (nights)

He's now texting me saying he thinks he needs to come home as his stomach is very painful and he's on the verge of being sick.

If this was 24 hours later I'd be thinking he has food poisoning, can that take hold so quickly?

He hasn't eaten anything else.

I'm just bracing myself for the children to get the same..

I've NC'd for his sake as we have loved ones on here and he'd be mortified if they knew.

If you can get some anti-emetic tablets and imodium it can help, my Dr gave me an anti-nausea needle the next morning because I was determined to go to work as both boss and fell office worker were going to be away that day, so wanted to be there. Needle worked great for a few hours but in the end I had to be driven back home by a colleague.

Bluntness100 · 29/01/2021 06:56

Op, it won’t be the mince no, it’s too soon. So it’s something else he ate, likely up to 48 hours ago. Some food poisoning actually takes a week. The only thing that would likely hit so soon is if he had shellfish. As he didn’t, another food item was the culprit.

Food poisoning takes a hold very quickly , normal within a hour or so.

Veterinari · 29/01/2021 07:01

@Highfalutinlootin

Food poisoning actually happens within about 4 hours, not 24. It kicks in as soon as you've digested the food and it reaches your intestines. If you don't get sick for 24 hours, the cause is almost definitely NOT food poisoning. I've had the misfortune of having salmonella and several more minor instances of bacterial food poisoning when I lived abroad.

Best thing to do is hydrate, rest, and ensure he gets electrolytes. If he doesn't start getting better in a day or two, go to the hospital, as (very rarely) the bacterial load is high enough you need medication.

It depends on the cause. Salmonella food poisoning can actually occur up to 6 days after you've eaten the problem food.

Yes food poisoning does usually kick in quickly, but it can sometimes take days

Fortherosesjoni70 · 29/01/2021 07:02

@Ultimatecougar

More likely to be Covid
This
Fortherosesjoni70 · 29/01/2021 07:03

If you've been fine eating the mince, it's unlikely.
It could be covid. He should not be at work.

chopc · 29/01/2021 07:06

You can have a Covid test for any reason now, no?

Bluesheep8 · 29/01/2021 07:07

Depending on what caused food poisoning that can be contagious too

This. He shouldn't have gone to work

Brefugee · 29/01/2021 07:10

Feel sorry for your DH, OP. I hope he recovers soon.

But this is one of the things that exasperates me about people. We have thread after thread here about chucking away food the second it hits the "best before" date, even the "use by" date and the sensible answers are: use your eyes and nose. It's likely to be perfectly fine.

And here the blind following of the date meant that despite thinking it smelt dodgy he continued to cook and eat it. As the professor in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe says "what do they teach children in schools these days?"

Skipsurvey · 29/01/2021 07:10

was it defrosted when he cooked it?

CherryValanc · 29/01/2021 07:22

But why food poisoning, rather than a gastric upset?

Quite a dramatic leap to food poisoning. Also, in the bright side, if he's had one bout of diarrhoea and isn't vomiting, then if it is food poisoning it's mild

Very odd to eat food that no one else in the house way because it tastes bad. Bad mince usually stinks.

Northernsoullover · 29/01/2021 07:28

@yawnsvillex

This is hilarious.

An eyelash fell out ....... OMG MUST BE COVID

Don't be so bloody nasty. Covid has so many different symptoms. Shits is very common. You know damn well that if someone mentioned an eyelash no one would say that. Nothing funny about this post anyway. No one should be going to work after having the shits. Covid times or not.
Silvercatowner · 29/01/2021 07:30

Uuuurgh... I'm sure his colleagues will be delighted to catch whatever he's got - just adding possible Noro into the Covid soup.

Northernsoullover · 29/01/2021 07:33

All the posters that say food poisoning comes on in a few hours. It really depends on what has caused it. It can be anything from 4-36 and there are outliers that can be quicker or even longer. Scrombroid poisoning from oily fish can take minutes!

Whattheduck · 29/01/2021 07:34

I’ve just had covid and that was one of my symptoms it was also the 1st symptom my Dh had and he tested positive
That said I’ve also had food poisoning that came on really quickly after eating lasagne at a restaurant a few years ago and I ended up in hospital
Hope he feels brighter soon

ineedaholidaynow · 29/01/2021 07:35

@Frownette food poisoning can be contagious so why would you battle on?

FourOnTheHill · 29/01/2021 07:37

My family had covid recently and it was nearly all gastric symptoms like this. I think they lied about symptoms to get the tests. Cough and loss of taste/ smell came later.

Frownette · 29/01/2021 07:39

@ineedaholidaynow is it really contagious? About ten years ago I was sick at work, no warning signs, I had a few secs to dash to the loo before vomiting (only V no D). My manager said I was white as a sheet and I couldn't think of a reason for it except some oysters the day before.

No-one else got sick though.

sarahC40 · 29/01/2021 07:40

On admission to hospital last week, my son was asked about gastric problems as a covid symptom. I’d just get a test.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/01/2021 07:45

@Frownette I think it depends on what causes it. So people should really follow the normal 48 hour rule just in case

Mummyratbag · 29/01/2021 07:46

Husband and I went to a wedding once, drove home the next day. 24 hours on from the wedding we both were very ill withing minutes of each other. Spoke to the other people we knew who had attended and they were the same. Other times been ill within hours of eating something. It varies. It may be food poisoning, it could be the first sign of covid - either way I wouldn't want him at work with me.

Pootle40 · 29/01/2021 07:49

@Letsallscreamatthesistene

Lolling at the covid suggestions. Its ridiculous. Got the shits? Covid. Vomiting? Covid. Skin melting away? Covid. Leg fallen off? Covid.
GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

I was reading along thinking 'fucking hell every thread on here turns to Covid'

Madness.

Turnedouttoes · 29/01/2021 07:49

Agree that there’s no definitive time scale for food poisoning. I caught campylobacter on holiday in Turkey and didn’t have any symptoms until I got home. The first being a really weird confusion and then horrendous diarrhoea. I ended up in hospital and the doctors thought initially it was Crohns as it had destroyed my insides so badly.

rwalker · 29/01/2021 07:53

Yes food poisoning can come on that quick. Keep an eye if he doesn't pick up in 24hours or he get other symptoms lie and get a test for peace of mind.

I think we have to be realistic about it being covid it could be just like the rest of us could be asymptomatic . Tiredness is a covid symptom how many of us get a cover test when we are tierd
