Poor DH shit himself then went to work

Literally.

DH made spaghetti bolognese for tea this evening using mince we bought from Lidl on Monday. We put in the freezer until today.

It was in date by several days when we bought it so shouldn't have gone off (especially as it was frozen immediately upon returning home) but it did smell a bit different when he was cooking it.

Within a couple of hours of eating it he's developed a bad stomach and had an accident on the way home from taking DSC back to their mums.

He showered and sorted himself out then left to go to work (nights)

He's now texting me saying he thinks he needs to come home as his stomach is very painful and he's on the verge of being sick.

If this was 24 hours later I'd be thinking he has food poisoning, can that take hold so quickly?

He hasn't eaten anything else.

I'm just bracing myself for the children to get the same..

I've NC'd for his sake as we have loved ones on here and he'd be mortified if they knew.

Well Pootle there is an awful lot of it about!

EatingAllThePies · 29/01/2021 07:57

@chopc

You can have a Covid test for any reason now, no?
Not where we live. We were a hotspot but mass testing didn't come to us so still need one of the symptoms for a test.
Cokie3 · 29/01/2021 07:58

I was reading along thinking 'fucking hell every thread on here turns to Covid'

That could replace the saying 'everything turns to shit '.

My husbands first symptom of covid was feeling sick and he thought the glass of wine he had the night before smelled off. The fever and slight cough came later. Hope he feels better soon x

bootsandcats · 29/01/2021 08:00

I don't think people are being unreasonable to mention covid. I tested positive earlier this month and my symptoms were similar to the OP's DH. I put my symptoms in the Zoe app who then asked/invited me to get tested.
Hope he feels better soon.

DisgruntledPelican · 29/01/2021 08:01

@Cokie3

If you can get some anti-emetic tablets and imodium it can help, my Dr gave me an anti-nausea needle the next morning because I was determined to go to work as both boss and fell office worker were going to be away that day, so wanted to be there. Needle worked great for a few hours but in the end I had to be driven back home by a colleague.
That’s awful.
MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 29/01/2021 08:06

[quote KatharinaRosalie]If you don't get sick for 24 hours, the cause is almost definitely NOT food poisoning.

Not true at all. Salmonella incubation period is 12-27 hours, campylobacter generally up to 5 days, but up to 10 has been reported.

Yes but one of the mysteries of MN is how many posters use Dr Google, but apparently can't read what she says Wink

As you say, there is a huge variation in food poisoning onset time, depending on which bacteria are involved, from an hour with Staph exotoxins, to nearly 2 weeks with others.

DaisyHeadMaisy · 29/01/2021 08:11

It's more likely to be some kind of bug rather than food poisoning. It was wrong of him to go to work and potentially spread it to his colleagues or shitting himself and messing up himself and the work loos.

Drinkarsefeck · 29/01/2021 08:13

Common sense in the middle of a pandemic is that when you develop possible symptoms of said pandemic you isolate and get tested. Those mocking and saying it won't be covid may well be right, but if not no wonder the virus is rife with those attitudes ffs.

crossstitchingnana · 29/01/2021 08:14

@borntohula

How the hell is it more likely to be covid!? 🤣
Because it's a common symptom of the new variant. My neighbour had 4 days of stomach upset, thought she had norovirus. She gave lifts to family and on 3rd day went to work, in a care home. Then started to cough with stabbing chest pains. COVID test was positive. Now loads off sick and one in hospital fighting for his life. Get tested.
ineedaholidaynow · 29/01/2021 08:20

Why the hell would anyone go near anyone else if they thought they had norovirus?

I missed my Nan’s 100th birthday party because I was still in 48 hour isolation period after a bout of norovirus and there was no way I could risk passing it on to her or the rest of the care home residents. I was bitterly disappointed but I couldn’t take the risk.

Thatwentbadly · 29/01/2021 08:22

@Gee78

I told him not to bother going to work but be was adamant he needed to show his face, management aren't very accommodating when it comes to being off sick. He was sure it was the mince and not a gastro bug so thought he'd be fine.

He's on his way home now having spoken to the manager in person who can see he's suffering.

I'm going to make up a bed on the sofa so he can have the bed.

Poor sod. He's mortified about what happened when he was taking the kids home and to make matters worse had to tell his ex why he had to rush off rather than go over what the kids had eaten/done etc.

You can still pass on food positioning.

Absolutely ridiculous isn't it. Jesus Christ, if I'd not bothered going into work every time I'd had the shits I'd have no business left. People on MN must have very understanding employers.

I've worked 12 days with 1 day off I'm tired do you think I should get a covid test

mylovelydd · 29/01/2021 08:28

There is a stomach bug doing the rounds at the moment.
I know first hand because our household went down with it this week and explosive diarrhoea was prevalent. It's probably Norovirus in our case but it came out of nowhere, so to speak.

mylovelydd · 29/01/2021 08:29

When I had Covid I had diarrhoea in the mornings for about 5 days before the other symptoms kicked in. Stomach upset wasn't mentioned at the time as being a symptom. What we had this week was nothing like that though.

Ilovenewyear · 29/01/2021 08:30

For those asking, where I live you can get a lateral flow test without symptoms.

In relation to the food poisoning? I would personally be more concerned that it was CV or noro and he took that into work. Isn’t the advice to stay at home if you have D&V for 48 hours? I’d be surprised if it was a meal he ate that same evening.

This is the NHS advice:
The symptoms of food poisoning usually begin within one to two days of eating contaminated food, although they may start at any point between a few hours and several weeks later.

Tbh if I’d been so unwell I’d shit myself in my car, I wouldn’t be going anywhere else.

userxx · 29/01/2021 08:31

@rwalker definitely get a test. Tiredness is a symptom, forget the 12 days of non stop work, it's more likely covid then old fashioned tiredness. 🙄

callmeadoctor · 29/01/2021 08:33

Were we never ill before Covid then? (genuine question.................)

Ilovenewyear · 29/01/2021 08:34

Also @minnimiss makes a really good point about the smell of the mince and a change to smell being a symptom, especially given the DC ate a bit and appear fine (at the moment).

ineedaholidaynow · 29/01/2021 08:36

Did the children think it smelt funny or did you stop them eating it?

rwalker · 29/01/2021 08:38

Lol i was taking the piss the list of possible systems is getting to a point now where the only thing missing is thirst and normal breathing .

grey12 · 29/01/2021 08:39

Food poisoning can come within a few hours of the meal

userxx · 29/01/2021 08:40

Nope. It was just a figment of your imagination. Prior to covid, illnesses didn't exist 🤷‍♂️.

I've made food that's given me a dodgy tummy but others have been fine, it happens, some things just don't agree with you.

alanpartridgefromtheoasthouse · 29/01/2021 08:42

Off the point slightly, but my mind is blown imagining the sheer mortification of having to tell your ex that you've just shit your pants in front of them.
