Welcome in ADs. Snuggle up hygge-style 'cause there ain't much going on out there for a while... except rain.

I haven't got a pussy of my own for gratuitous showing off, so I shall pretend to be Dr Evil with Mr Biggleswade Grin

I stick with carrying and borrowing too.

In utterly momentous news, her most Imperial Majesty has deigned to use the catflap this evening. She has only done this on two other occasions to bring us presents. Tonight it's cos it's raining cats and dogs

TheOrchidKiller · 04/02/2021 20:38

As a mum who still has to count on her fingers, & who can't do taking-away, it's a miracle (& source of bafflement) that I have produced children who can do equations, understand percentages, & can spilt a bill three ways in a restaurant including sorting out the change & a tip.

I'd be bloody useless with homeschooling.

TheOrchidKiller · 04/02/2021 20:39

I misread that Isay as the actual Queen using a catflap.

ISaySteadyOn · 04/02/2021 20:54

I bet she could, too and look elegant whilst doing so.

Curlygirl06 · 04/02/2021 21:53

@SirSamuelVimes

I spoilt my ballot at the last general election. No idea if I'll be able to vote for anyone at the next.
I usually get called in for vote counting, and the spoilt papers with rude comments/ pictures of cock and balls etc make our night!
DWPmisery1972 · 04/02/2021 21:56

Forgot to say thank you DrRamses aswell!

CruCru · 04/02/2021 22:00

I usually vote Lib Dem. I’ve been told that it’s a bit of a non-vote but both Tories and Labour have annoyed me too much.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/02/2021 23:07

There seems to be so many mind boggling ways of doing maths. The very visual methods must be good for displaying the concepts and scales of numbers... it's just that for home learning, my two get it and find those methods fiddly and tedious and just want to crack on and get the real sums done with and bugger back off for youtube/ minecraft.
They're the kind of kids that pause for 20 seconds, blurt out the answer and job done.

I did laugh at DS1's maths today, proper autistic mindset answer to a verbal problem. "Explain why Dexter is incorrect" "I know"
Well yes, DS1, I know you just know, but that's not quite what the question wants. It wants you to infer that showing the workings out is required to demonstrate your mathematical superiority my dear Wink

Excellent, Tom Lehrer being mathematical. One of my favourite things.

DWPmisery1972 · 05/02/2021 02:15

Kids are at their dads so I decided to catch up with some NVQ work- big mistake sitting at the laptop, I’ve been rolling round in agony and have had to resort to the morphine- I’ve managed to avoid it since being home but I’ve just been crying and wailing and pacing like a dying animal 🙄 feel so much better now. Watching old only fools and horses, reminds me of watching it with my grandad so I feel safe and pain free and not thing about the plague.

Any insomniac ADs around? If not see you all in the morning

As far as the ‘new’ maths I’m not so sure; I did 2 years of a maths undergrad so I’ve been trying to teach my 5 year old about the Möbius band and pi... I don’t know how to teach kiddie maths. I’m bloody useless.

Love to all :) x

Blobby10 · 05/02/2021 08:49

When my kids were at primary school and learning long division, I couldn't get my head around it ! Spoke to their teacher who said it was fine to teach them the old fashioned way - she preferred it but the rules said they had to teach the new fangled and way more complicated way. In her opinion it was good for the children to know different ways of solving a problem. But that was a small village school with less than 15 in a year group Grin. I would imagine teachers of much bigger classes wouldn't be able to be so flexible.

Weedsnseeds1 · 05/02/2021 09:56

Vintagelovingmum nice to know I have a virtual neighbour on here!

SirSamuelVimes · 05/02/2021 09:59

DD is only in year two so has just started division and multiplication, and times tables. I'm already dreading anything more difficult! I don't know my tables and I can't remember how to do long anything. Sad I got a B in maths GCSE way back when so I'm not completely innumerate but I hate hate hated it and have blocked all memories! Luckily she seems to be pretty good at it so far so I'm hoping I won't need to be too involved.

Need to go to Sainsbury's this afternoon. Ran out of tea bags!! Have been avoiding them since they put back all their stupid one way tape and barriers. Boo. On the upside, have made plans to go for a walk with a friend next week, and bring our kids, so that little bit of rule bending is cheering me up.

Weedsnseeds1 · 05/02/2021 10:03

I'm trying to control my urge to comment on some of the teacher threads.
So many determined not to return to the classrooms unless they are vaccinated ahead of higher risk groups.
I'm just happy that I'll be allowed on site at a meat factory next week, despite them having a bit of COVID, they were umming and ahing about whether it was too risky or not, while I had my fingers crossed that I wouldn't be spending 3 days on zoom watching them work virtually and doing paperwork!
Unfortunately the site the following week has gone virtual as they have 60 out of 90 employees positive at the moment.
BUT THEY ARE ALLOWED TO WEAR MASKS. So all good then! 😁

Ha! We had the same scenario here, with me explaining that “because Dexter is really stupid” is NOT the answer your teacher is looking for DS. DS compared the White Rose videos we get every day to Vogon Poetry, as DD slid out of her chair wailing “it’s so BOOORING”.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/02/2021 12:04

The Ds have slacked off on their Vogon-esque poetry lately Grin

Standing in a park watching DS1 and his bestie playing football at a safe distance. They normally hate football Grin

Re maths years ago tried to help two do it was told mummy you are doing it wrong. So next day in the playground saw the teacher/headteacher and said look sorry but I cannot help them because I do not understand. She asked if anyone else needed help loads of parents stood there said yes. So bless her she set up a lesson and asked who wanted to come in after school to learn. Imagine a load of parents on titchy chairs sat at titchy desks learning maths all over again Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 05/02/2021 12:48

I'm more competent than I realised... as long as y5 stay clear of long division. There's just a mental black hole on that one.

If the weather plays ball, I'll get DS1 and friend out again soon.

I just don't know what to do about DS2. There's a few "Stay Safe at Home Hun" types on the class whatsapp, so I don't feel comfortable putting out an appeal. Our neighbour is quite reasonable, but he spends most of his weekday time with his GP childcare bubble. DS2 has put up such a strong mental wall to preseve himself too.

Friend of a friend fined by the police. Lives two miles from Llandudno, so stuck dogs in car, went to Asda shopping then to Llandudno beach two streets over. Broken the rules police said because she could only exercise dogs from home on foot. Can this be right? They are ANPR checking all vehicles. Because it was sunny this morning they were on the beaches checking cars early.

Willow2017 · 05/02/2021 14:13

What rubbish justasking she was already there for shopping so she didnt go especially to exercise dogs plus there is no legal definition of local.

Police have gone mad too. They do not have the power to fine people for something there is no law against.

Jourdain11 · 05/02/2021 14:31

I had an argument with the police this morning. I'm afraid I was not very polite Blush

@justasking111 I would challenge that in her position (I say that as a solicitor). She did not drive for the purposes of exercising her dogs, though even if she had done then my understanding is that a local journey is permitted. It is only 2 miles from her home.

Many people drive to my local park in SE London to exercise dogs (or kids). In the case of the former, many are elderly and want to take their dogs somewhere where they can be off lead. They probably live in the area but cannot manage the walk to and from the park and round it, so drive. There is nothing in the regs prohibiting that.

Weedsnseeds1 · 05/02/2021 15:44

Wales is more draconian than England. Exercise must start and end from your home (wheelchair users are allowed a minimal drive if they can't use their chair directly from their home), so I suppose the police are correct in that example, but being very petty, given the person was at the supermarket already.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 05/02/2021 15:52

@Weedsneeds1 ah yes, I had totally failed to process that it happened in Wales. I amazed that the Police took issue with it though.

I just had one of those flashes, where you mentally step outside yourself and all that has happened over the last 11 months, and have to pinch yourself that this is actually real. Are we really talking about the legality of someone driving 2 miles to exercise her dogs having when she has already gone to the shops? YES PLATES, YES... It has really come to this.
