Welcome in ADs. Snuggle up hygge-style 'cause there ain't much going on out there for a while... except rain.

I haven't got a pussy of my own for gratuitous showing off, so I shall pretend to be Dr Evil with Mr Biggleswade Grin

Why all the panic about the South African variant? Cases are plummeting there, so it can't be that virulent.

DWPmisery1972 · 04/02/2021 13:34

I went ‘over there’ while I was in hospital to have a good laugh and there was a thread about vaccine refusal- someone suggested that anyone that refuses the vaccine should be barred from using the NHS

so I figured I should have been chucked out into the cold instead of having my broken bone sorted because afterall if I wasn’t trying to carry to much down the stairs I probably wouldn’t have fallen... 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 oh dear, the D’s do make me laugh.

Anyway hope everyone is well and coping, I’m just about capable of walking around the house now with the meds I’ve got and some lovely people from my church have done my shopping, brought meals and one started my car and gave it a drive round (as I haven’t driven it for ages and I won’t be driving for a long time and I’m worried about dead battery)

Hope everyone else has given up on homeschooling like I have Grin I’m just about managing to keep everyone fed and kept alive at the moment.

What’s the latest re the news? I refuse to look at it because I’ll cry (especially because of the Morphine) but has bojo said anything interesting? What have I missed? 4 days out of the loop I feel like something must be going on...

Love to all! Flowers

BogRollBOGOF · 04/02/2021 13:56

Homeschooling is err... minimal here. We log on and do the maths sheet. Possibly a scraping of something else if the going is good. I just can't win between either/ both kicking off, and if I divide and conquor (usual strategy) he's distracted and wants to duck off and join his brother.

Trying to psyche up to get them out to a park. Not attempting to log on for Zoom PE.

In good news, passed the initial stage of EHCP assessment to move on to full assessment. That should be in a 16 week window, so potentially by June. It would be great if we are in a place for extra support for y6 secondary application and transition next school year. Our catchment secondary is not great for children like DS1.

@amicissimma Why all the panic about the South African variant? Cases are plummeting there, so it can't be that virulent. I'm sure all this talk of "variants" is the latest government stick to keep the public terrified, along with "look them in the eyes". They like to change their slogans regularly. "Long Covid" and "don't kill granny" were so last month. It was a "highly transmissible variant" that the government used as the reason to cancel Christmas (poor old Boris, now restyled as Cromwell).

The BBC keeps mentioning things to do with post-Covid, so this is a step in the right direction that the government spin machine is now allowing (or ordering) the BBC to mention such things. There's an article about "firms in the dark about reopening", and how they can't plan without this, more pressure on Saint Boris and his merry men to open up. The BBC is starting to mention unemployment as well. This discourse about the consequences of the much-hallowed lockdown is long overdue.

@TooManyPlatesInMotion "Tranche" of measures. They love their obscure words, don't they? I remember a cartoon of Tony Blair writing an angry letter to the Sun, with a "dictionary of big words" by his side.

With case numbers falling they’ve got to keep us scared somehow, and this is their way

DWPmisery1972 · 04/02/2021 14:43

Can any AD rationalise for me the reason why cases are down but deaths are still really high, following a similar pattern to when this all started? (Relatively small amount of cases and lots of deaths)- back in jan I could understand a ‘lag’ but what is happening? Is it because they’ve changed the way they report death figures or what?

justasking111 · 04/02/2021 14:52

DILs home schooling has gone kaput, youngest at playgroup had a cold, coughed so is now banned. Her boiler went kaput, so went to their empty holiday let for a bath and a warm up. New boiler hopefully by next week.

SA variant, two in Anglesey, one in Conwy so welsh government gone into melt down over that. Guess that is us locked down further and for longer, back to school out the window for now.

Accidentally saw a bit of news, lady with cancer last March not seen now terminal said gratefully how wonderful macmillan nurse had been then showed said nurse on a zoom call. FFS are macmillan not making home visits now. Never mind a young woman who is dying because of the holy grail covid.

Will we ever know how many died of cancer etc. when the death certificates specify covid so often.

DrRamsesEmerson · 04/02/2021 14:53

Deaths lag behind cases by about 4 weeks (because that's roughly how long most cases take from first infection to death). Back in early January cases were very high, so we're still getting a lot of deaths - but I'd have expected the death rates to start falling last week, as indeed they did, and they should keep coming down now. Plus vaccination of the oldest age group should be kicking in to reduce the death rate too, although of course that age group will still be very likely to die of other things and might be deaths 'with Covid'.

OK cases first, then complications two to four weeks hence. Cases go down but those high cases result in deaths later. You have to fast forward from cases around a month to see death figures. So take a death figure and go back four weeks. Some die fast because of age/complications some hang on for a while because they are stronger.

January6th 16k cases four weeks later 1322 deaths, not accurate but an indicator.

Hope this helps, our deaths will be high for a while longer

justasking111 · 04/02/2021 14:59

Spains cases are climbing again, which is not a good sign for them.

LastTrainEast · 04/02/2021 15:12

I've had word from the resistance in Spain. It's been difficult since Boris had his black helicopter teams seize the government there. He is having people infected in Spain to frighten middle ages women in the UK so he can keep them under lock-down.

It makes sense!!!!!!! wait sorry "IT MAKES SENSE!!!"

I've no problem with fanfic but it should be labelled as that or people will think you are serious.

DWPmisery1972 · 04/02/2021 15:40

Ah, thank you just! I’ve been totally crap at interpreting the stats during all this and am weary of going over ‘there’ to see their interpretation Because I’m sure they’re all saying it’s Armageddon

So thank you! :-)

Blobby10 · 04/02/2021 15:46

I'm getting concerned that the vaccination will be compulsory - at 51 I'm just in the age bracket that, according the the Daily Wail, MUST have the vaccine before lockdown can be lifted. Whilst not totally anti-vax I really don't want to have a vaccination for something that is, to me, very very very low risk. I don't generally go abroad on holiday (maybe by ferry to Ireland occasionally) or inhabit shopping centres, pubs, clubs, cinemas or go out anywhere as I'm an antisocial sod. Supermarket visits are a clean surgical strike with no browsing, in and out as quickly as possible. I work in an office on my own and don't get close to any colleagues or share facilities. Dont use public transport.

I don't care for anyone (ie have vulnerable members of my family that I'm in close contact with ! - of course I 'care' for members of my family!) so even in the remote chance of me catching Covid, I am so unlikely to pass it on and even less likely to be ill with it. what is the point in me having a vaccine?

Seriouslymole · 04/02/2021 16:41

@Blobby10 - I don't think they can make in compulsory, can they? I wouldn't read too much into the Daily Mail to be honest, I'm not sure they're the pinnacle of truth and scientific integrity (mind you, I'm not sure at all who is any more).

Iheartmysmart · 04/02/2021 17:01

I’m in the over 50 bracket as well @Blobby10 and I’m not overly fussed about getting the vaccine either. But I like the pub, cinema, restaurants and would normally travel quite a lot for work on the train and tube. Plus both parents are vulnerable, particularly dad with COPD. It’s a dilemma if I’m honest.

justasking111 · 04/02/2021 17:08

Phone just rang covid centre wanting to speak to OH, he is booked in for tomorrow, they would have done me but at 64 they said they could not swing it. Oh god I hope this jab shuts him up at last. Although he will probably hold out for the second one before relaxing. He did say yesterday well we cannot relax until I have had both jabs (scream) He is under 70 until the weekend so they are cracking on around here.

MercyBooth · 04/02/2021 17:34

@TooManyPlatesInMotion Ive always voted Labour (apart from one time years ago when i voted Green) and ive never voted Tory and never will but i will never vote Labour again either. Ive been seriously considering just spoiling every ballot paper from now on until my death.

smallandimperfectlyformed · 04/02/2021 18:18

Like so many of you I am currently politically homeless, not sure who I will vote for at the next election. Glad your husband is having the jab tomorrow just asking111. I know he says he won't relax until you have both had both jabs but after a while I feel positive that the news will start to get more positive and seeing other people relax will hopefully have a positive impact on him. Fingers crossed anyway! I went to Sainsbury's with my 5 year old today and it was much nicer than it has been in forever. I wore my mask, most people were (I don't care if people aren't...the way mask exempt people are treated is shocking), they still have the yellow tape everywhere and we still have to enter via the underground car park but it was still better than before. They have a stand with a pump for you to sanitize your hands but have removed the trolley and basket cleaning station. The baskets have a sign above them saying that they have already been sanitized. No idea about the trolleys as we were only there for cream of tartar and food colouring (making playdough for homeschooling!). The best thing though was the whole time that we were there I didn't hear one of those ghastly tannoy announcements about keeping me safe etc. I understand why they may play them occasionally but like I said before the amount they were playing them was just ridiculous!

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 04/02/2021 19:15

@MercyBooth yes, I feel exactly the same. I feel like wiping my arse on every ballot paper I encounter between now and my death.

SirSamuelVimes · 04/02/2021 19:19

I spoilt my ballot at the last general election. No idea if I'll be able to vote for anyone at the next.

justasking111 · 04/02/2021 19:25

Welsh politics is a waste of time labour will always get in no matter how badly they run things, plaid will not stand up to them because they make labour the majority by sharing a bed and getting the bits they want. Conservatives just sit there waiting until they can find a safe seat in England. More interested in westminster than Wales. I do vote for the welsh assembly but mps nope.

MercyBooth · 04/02/2021 19:43

@TooManyPlatesInMotion You win. Grin

Same.

But for all of us homeschooling

SirSamuelVimes · 04/02/2021 20:18

@ISaySteadyOn that video made my head hurt!!

amicissimma · 04/02/2021 20:26

@ISaySteadyOn, I grew up with 'New' Maths. My mum was horrified and wouldn't involve herself.

My DC did a newer type of maths. Something called 'chunking' was mentioned. People tell me it's very easy, but I CBA. I'll stick to my HTU and carrying and borrowing. I can work out a percentage in a flash. And I bet they can't use a slide rule, anyway! Or log tables.

(My DC seem to have become numerate in some way despite having a parent with her head stuck in the sand.)
