One baguette between 5 of us - 2 adults three small DC

One piece each plus extra few pieces for whoever wants them

@Impatientwino

I've just uncharacteristically policed the consumption of a garlic flatbread thanks to this thread.

I've included a diagram for your entertainment to show how distribution went...

4 people

Me - 42 32
DH - 44 (today)
DS1 - 8
DS2 - 3

As you can see from my diagram it was fairly even except DS2 (who is still unsold on the whole garlic bread concept) licked his bit and then dropped the rest on the floor. I have no idea if it's final fate if I'm honest.

The one remaining slice was then fairly evenly voted to be the birthday slice so DH snuffled that.

In terms of menu it was served alongside a spaghetti Bolognese and a fairly mediocre salad

It was also accompanied by champagne due to it being DH birthday today but to balance out the universe we had Vienetta for dessert Grin

I love this post. Wondering if the floor was the final destination of if rescuing took place.

Thank you to someone up-thread who's clearly wise-beyond-words, for suggesting using garlic bread as a vessel to transport delectables, such as burrata, salami, tomatoes, etc., etc. ad nauseam, to ones gob! Perfect way to shake up picnics.

As a family, we don't buy ready-made garlic bread, well, I don't really make it either as pasta has enough carbs without needing to add any in form of bread.
We do do a bastardised pan con tomato though, had it in a fab little place in Barcelona; slice of sourdough, toasted, rubbed with garlic and then rubbed with ripest tomato one could find. Perfect with jamon serrano and a glass of rosado.
Hungry now.

@rosetylersbiggun

I live alone, so I'd probably break a garlic stick in half and cook that for one meal, then cook the other half for the next meal.

I once incited a major debate at a party as to whether it's socially acceptable to order a side of garlic bread as pudding, if everyone else at the table is having pudding, when you don't have a sweet tooth but do like garlic bread.

Totally acceptable (but I have gone to a restaurant alone because I really fancied a certain pudding, and just ate that, so I might not be the best judge. It was a chocolate and cherry sundae and I regret nothing).

As for the original question, there are only two of us in our house so we’d have half a baguette each, but with a smaller amount of pasta than otherwise. Or baguette, ratatouille and goats cheese without the pasta.

HeronLanyon · 28/01/2021 11:27

Feawen I’d say that’s totally acceptable. I usually don’t eat a dessert. I frequently ask to see the dessert menu before making any other decisions just in case there’s something irresistible which needs to inform my other ordering.

I do that too. I’ve also been known to skip the main and have a starter and a pudding.

A garlic baguette serves five of us here ! It's obviously not our main meal, usually with pasta. So that's me, dh and our three dc.

notacooldad · 28/01/2021 12:17

Some of tbe bagueon here sounf like the infamous mumsnet chicken with the number of people they are feeding!

BlueJag · 28/01/2021 12:18

With a teen son serving for one unless we wrestle to get a slice. Normally I bake 2 for 3 of us.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 28/01/2021 13:42

We don't buy the baguettes. We buy frozen garlic bread slices from Aldi, so much more convenient than a baguette! We usually eat 6-7 slices with a pasta meal, 2 each for me and DH, DD will have either 1 or 2, depends what she fancies. And toddler DS will have 1.

Directionerforever · 28/01/2021 14:33

I once asked for the dessert as a starter as there was nothing on the starter menu I fancied. Went on to have my main after that.

I was pregnant and had no care for social norms 😂

Ddot · 28/01/2021 15:33

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

2021manu · 28/01/2021 16:14

We always have leftovers so eat with with the leftover roast chicken later in the week 😂

The last time I had a garlic baguette as a side was with a shared pizza, not pasta.
I ate 2/3 of the garlic baguette & my sister ate the rest!
But I hadn't had one in probably a year, it's a treat food.

Tehmina23 · 28/01/2021 20:48

I feel really sorry for some of you sharing a baguette between five eg.
They are quite cheap too depending on what supermarkets you go to, sometimes you can get a pack of 2 for £1?
But if you can't afford it I guess a little piece is ok.

All these years I could have been buying and eating hundreds of garlic baguettes every day because I can afford to, but I've been stopping after a couple of slices. How did I not know that you stop eating when you have no money left, not when you're full? Blush

Why do you assume that those sharing with more people are doing so because they can’t afford more. Here it’s served as a side to an already fairly heavy meal, more for a hit of crunchy and garlicky flavour. I could afford to buy as many as I liked but that doesn’t mean I do.
MajesticWhine · 28/01/2021 21:24
  1. No shortage of funds thanks. It's enough to have one or two slices if you're also having pasta.

Hmm We share a garlic bread between 5 because it is an accompaniment to a meal like pasta, which is already a carb heavy meal. We also generally serve a side salad too so a slice or two of garlic bread is fine just to mop up sauce with a meal.

I can afford plenty of garlic breads thank you very much Grin.
We are not scrimping on the garlic bread , just aware of a balanced meal and carb levels overall across a meal.
