DH and DS have just left to go to the music shop to collect DS's bass guitar which was in for repair. He assures me that it is essential for college work (which it likely is) so DH has reluctantly agreed.

DH resents leaving home at the best of times, and has been mooching around jingling his keys and pointedly looking at his watch. DS who is so laid back he's practically horizontal has been completely impervious to this.

So now I'm at home. Alone. In the peace and quiet.

I have about 964 jobs to do but at the moment I'm just sat on the sofa admiring the utter peace and quiet. I estimate I have at least two hours before they get back. I think I will delay my dog walk until just before they return, so that I can get maximum benefit from my solitude.

soddingkitten · 06/02/2021 10:36

My friend is an early bird so I was up and out early for a walk with her. We stopped off to buy takeaway coffee on the return leg and I treated myself to a slice of homemade cake. It was good cake. When I got home DH and DS2 were watching a Captain America film. DS2 has the magic blanket and Sodding draped across his lap.

HelenaJustina · 06/02/2021 11:35

I’ve been for a run, cleared up the breakfast bombsite kitchen and hung out the washing. DC2 wants to go for a run with me later which my excuse for not showering yet. Bracing myself to iron and hoover.

HildaTablet · 06/02/2021 11:38

Congratulations to Silkie and commiserations to Spudlet re bodge. As someone who lives in a 400-year-old house, I have far too intimate a knowledge of bodges, including discovering during renovations that someone back in the mists of time decided to ‘repair’ a section of crumbling floorboards by nailing a bit of old metal biscuit tin lid on top of them.

I too would like to see a picture of Morose Pigeon, Prok. I used to work in an attic office and a friend and I became very attached to a hideously ugly baby pigeon in a nest just outside the window. We named it Clunch Pit, after the location of a murder in a PD James novel (I think that was friend’s idea iirc, but it seemed to fit the pigeon’s unprepossessing appearance).

Frownette · 06/02/2021 11:50

I picked up my parcel from the neighbour a bit unsure of the etiquette - so I knocked and stood back holding up my red post office card. It was my beauty box (vitamins, hand sanitiser, face wash, soap, peel mask and...something else? Going senile!). He seemed nice. He was a bit unsure as well and was about to give it to me then put it on the step.

They also put in a free boxed brush and I thought I'd take it to a charity shop then remembered I couldn't.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/02/2021 11:55

Hilda Morose only ever comes round in the mornings, but I try to get a picture. But I think he looks like any othe wood pigeon out there just more judgmental.

I have (again) cleaned the bathroom drains. The problem in neither ours nor the LL's fault. The young couple who constructed the flat apparently only had a very limited understanding of the behaviour of water with or without particles in it and put the bathroom in a place that would cause trauma to PigletJohn and was the source of much hilarity for the last plumber.

Spudlet · 06/02/2021 12:50

Hilda Eek. We haven’t found any biscuit tin bodges yet - although way back in the mists of time (before MOTs existed!) my grandpa fixed a hole in the floor of his car with a biscuit tin that he hammered flat and soldered into place ConfusedShockGrin ‘Twas the stuff of family legend, as you can imagine.

Just back from a very wet walk - we got a bit caught out and didn’t really have much fun. However we are home now and all wearing dry trousers again while our jackets drip all over the kitchen floor. I am considering putting the gazebo up once the snow passes, to give DS a dry place to play outside, but DH is not keen (he is also not the person trying to keep a five year old happy and occupied in a small house mind you). I might just do it anyway.

Silkiechickscat · 06/02/2021 13:19

Thanks Hilda and Helena

Had messages from our buyers this morning who are very happy in their new home but very busy. They got keys at 4.40pm on Friday.

Hardly any sleep in last 36 hours but exchanged, completed, got £600 back from Air Asia, cancelled all bills for old house, did 1 day remote learning for DS and currently sorting/researching mine and DH's stamp duty (done) and capital gains taxes (more complicated) and DH's pension calculations (done). Then have to do rest of change of address letters and letter to solicitors but will leave that until tomorrow and the other 374 things on the list. And ordered DD's maths papers.

Just about to have lunch, a very light smoked salmon salad so I can have both the French flan dessert and the chocolates from the bakers. Now want to sleep for about 36 hours.

Frownette · 06/02/2021 13:28

Silkie you'd hate me, I just made someone eat a healthy meal before they had their pudding Grin

To be fair they do substitute meals with puddings far too frequently. Chocolates from bakers sound nice.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/02/2021 13:53

We had mixed salad and chicken.

DD is cleaning the shower, DH is making hummus (again - he loves this stuff). DS is eating. He always takes ages to finish his food.

littleloopylou · 06/02/2021 13:59

My support bubble neighbours are coming by for a playdate soon. First time they have been in my new house (rental).

DD chose an outfit for me to wear with high heels. She says I look beautiful.

I've been trawling the yellow stickered aisles at night as a sort of sport and will be making deeply discounted lamb loin and dauphinois potatoes later.

Taswama · 06/02/2021 14:20

I made a lovely pea and mint soup for lunch today. Unfortunately, while I was blending it, the flex of the blender lay on the hot ring I had just taken the pot from, and melted white plastic onto the ring.
I have managed to remove the plastic, but there is now a bit of a hole in the flex.

Congratulations on the completion Silkiecat

HelenaJustina · 06/02/2021 14:59

We had a late lunch of cottage pie and peas. I didn’t as due to late run (trying to let fog lift, it didn’t) I felt like I’d only just had breakfast.
I suggested sandwiches for lunch and cottage pie later but there was significant backlash as they know I now won’t be bothered to cook later and they can have cheese crackers and fruit for dinner! Have nearly hoovered but still not ironed!

Spudlet · 06/02/2021 15:33

DS has selected some new glasses. Specsavers have stopped doing the free second pair of children’s specs (first pair on the NHS of course), but they do still do them half price so he has chosen a bright red pair and a slightly more sober pair (which do, however, glow in the dark). He was very taken with the red frames in particular and kept trying to sneak off with them 🙈🤣 I practically had to frisk him before we left the opticians 😳 He can decide whether he wants to channel his inner European lefty academic (I always associate brightly coloured chunky plastic frames with that kind of look) each morning before school!

We collect them in a week! He is very excited already 😊

ladybee28 · 06/02/2021 15:53

Oh thank goodness this thread is still going!

I couldn't remember the name of it or any of its predecessors and spent ages last night searching the boards for keywords like "dull"and "small" and "mundane" to no avail Grin

I washed my sofa cushion covers yesterday and now I'm sat on the couch inhaling deeply every couple of minutes to enjoy the fresh smell.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/02/2021 16:02

spudlet DS always favoured bright green glasses. But he has slowly been growing out of his extreme far sightedness and now rarely needs glasses anymore.

MissConductUS · 06/02/2021 16:30

@ladybee28, I'm glad you found us. I honestly don't recall whether or not you've posted on any of the prior threads. If so, welcome back and well done finding us. If this is your delurk, welcome and thanks for sharing your thread discovery news.

Good day, lovely people of the thread. I'm sorry I'm getting on a bit late today. I've been out to the posh Italian grocery store for some critically needed pizza dough and pasta and the supermarket for everything else. The supermarket was mobbed, even at 9:30 AM, because we're getting another bloody snowstorm tomorrow!

Super Bowl storm expected to slam NYC with more snow

I've just been riding the stationary bike for the last few days. The torn ligament (it's the gluteus medius for any HCP's who are curious) in my hip has become more painful and I need to rest it. I rather like that I can watch Netflix on my phone while I ride and I'm not out in the bitter cold.

In other news, DH is working with a financial planner who will assess our retirement readiness. He's given him all of the figures and they have a call on Monday to review it all. I'm praying he says we can call it quits in three or four years. Both DC will be out of uni by then, but possibly back living with us.

I’m out of bed for the England-Scotland rugby, but I should have gone out for snacks first...

soddingkitten · 06/02/2021 17:40

I have just woken up from a wonderfully refreshing nap on the sofa. Sodding was asleep on my legs and so warm. We’ve just been up for a stretch and toilet break before returning to the sofa. I hope my reading productivity picks up now I’ve had a nap.

I posted a parcel earlier (clothing returns) and bought paneer on the way home. I am determined not to let it go off uneaten like the last pack of paneer I bought. I will find a recipe and a reason to cook with it instead of procrastinating this time. If anyone here has a good paneer suggestion or recipe, please share it.

soddingkitten · 06/02/2021 17:45

This looks delicious! Spinach and paneer kati roll

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/02/2021 18:08

Paneer - I guessed right it is cheese (the Turkish for cheese is peynir) this guess made my day Smile.

In other news:
DB just got vaccinated.
And they have not cancelled my foot-OP (yet).

Frownette · 06/02/2021 18:08

It does look nice. I forget who is vegan/vegetarian on here?

We just had a lovely meal so I'm feeling sleepy.

Silkiechickscat · 06/02/2021 18:59

Frownette In the end I had to have smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and only one cake, not the ones I wanted Sad but I remember my granny used to eat tins of sweetened condensed milk, think its a family sweet tooth. Bizarrely there's a lot of diabetes in our family, I've avoided it so far. My Mum always used to say to us she only had one friend that did healthy eating and she died at 40 of cancer so didn't do her much good. We do eat lots of fruit and veg now at least but far too much sugar.

I'm still seriously behind on sleep and feeling rather spaced out atm but in a good way as lots done. I'm drinking milky coffee and listening to Journey Faithfully to try and stay awake though I may just sleep again soon.

Silkiechickscat · 06/02/2021 19:00

Thanks Taswama

Squirrel26 · 06/02/2021 19:29

There is ‘light snow’ forecast here for tomorrow. But not till the afternoon. I hope it doesn’t. I’m not a fan of snow unless I’ve specifically gone on holiday to see it.

The dog was being annoying and barking at something outside, so I gave him a chew to shut him up. Now he’s being annoying because he likes the chew so much he doesn’t know what to do with himself and is running around whining with it in his mouth. Hmm
