I have started watching a new series - Deutschland 83 on All4. I only discovered it by reading an article about the third series - Deutschland 89 - in the Guardian. It's great to be able to hear German as I rarely get any practice these days, and discovered the meaning of Brause, which DS1 had in his Y9 lesson recently and I had never heard before and google had not helped. Only when I put 'Ostdeutsch Brause' in as a search term did I get any info. I wonder if his teacher is a fan of the programme, is East German herself or studied there as it seems to be a regional term (for fizzy pop). Is it a word you would use @Prokupatuscrakedatus ?

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 06/02/2021 20:02

@mathanxiety

The bitter cold is upon us. I rocked up to my car this morning at 7.15 to find that the doors were frozen shut thanks to freezing rain followed by a hard freeze overnight. Had to mount the icy steps to my back porch to find the useless old windshield scraper that I stashed there a few months ago instead of throwing it out when I bought its replacement. A few minutes of hacking and tugging later and I was on my way. I made chili when I got home but we're out of egg noodles so had to have it with rice. I might make Jiffy cornmeal muffins tomorrow.
DD sent me a picture of Lake Michigan today. Woah!

@taswama
Brause I'd use only in Brausepulver and Brausebonbon (sherbet??) because that is the tradename of the stuff. We used to buy little packets and pour the contents directly into our mouth without water to disgust our mum with Grin:

For fizzy drinks I'd use Sprudel, when it's mineral water with fruit taste. So yes, it is regional.

@MissConductUS

Welcome, *@MadKittenWoman*, and thanks for your weighty news. Smile

I have a digital kitchen scale that gets used multiple times a day, but not so fancy as yours. It is really handy for portion control and recipes. My kids are in uni, so the setting you mention would go unused for me.

Nydj, it's pizza night chez Conduct as well, but not for another four hours or so.

Is anyone's DH or DP planning on watching the Superbowl on Sunday? It's going to be on rather late for you. They do it in the evening for the east coast so that the west coast gets it mid-afternoon.

www.standard.co.uk/sport/super-bowl-2021-uk-time-where-to-watch-b918544.html

I myself am not a big American football fan, but will probably watch most of it with DH and DS.

DH is out shopping for dirty food for tomorrow. I'm not all that interested in the football but I do like us all getting together and eating lots. It's a nice atmosphere.

DH and DS are Patriots fans - I'm not sure how they feel about Tom Brady being in the Superbowl but playing for someone else.

Taswama · 06/02/2021 20:18

Danke Prok ! Those little packets look great but I think getting 500 may be excessive (and they are out of stock) and they won't deliver the box of 100 to GB. I may have to ask a German friend to send me some and hope they don't get intercepted by customs!
I would have said Limo as a generic fizzy unhealthy drink, rather than Sprüdel?

Frownette · 06/02/2021 20:21

I liked someone's explanation of how dips are done differently in the states (in a blog, not MN) so if anyone is doing one I'd like to hear :)

I was just walking back and neighbour opened the window and threw something out. I laughed because I thought "what are you doing, you madman" then he saw me and looked embarassed. I wouldn't have laughed if it'd landed on me!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/02/2021 20:51

@Taswama
Limo is regional, too, as is Kracherl.
But the really unhealthy fizzy drinks are usually referred to by their brand names Cola, Fanta etc.
DH drinks sth home made with limette, sugar and water, which is called limo, too.

Passthecake30 · 06/02/2021 21:01

I dropped some books off at the library (door) and fed some ducks. Didn’t get to speak to any people but smiled from a distance. Stripped my bedsheets so excited about going to bed.. and also looking forward to another snow day tomorrow!

1wokeuplikethis · 06/02/2021 21:07

I saw tulips in Morrison’s and bought them because I always forget how much I love tulips, and really they are a spring flower. They are starting to open today and look pretty. Make me think sunshine and open windows aren’t far away.

MissConductUS · 06/02/2021 22:03

@ZZTopGuitarSolo - Lots of Patriots fans have mixed feelings about Brady being in the SB. I heard one on the news describing it like going to the wedding of an old girlfriend who dumped you.

Welcome, @Passthecake30, and thanks for sharing your news. Are you expecting the same snow storm tomorrow that I am?

Welcome, @1wokeuplikethis, and thanks for sharing your flowery news. I love tulips too! I'll have to look for them the next time I'm in the supermarket.

The men are having grilled teriyaki skirt steak and I've ordered a burger. We have some leftover mac&cheese to go with it all.

Further news: discovered to my disappointment that Rosemary & Thyme is no longer available for free on YouTube. Looks like the BritBox people have rooted out a source of free content, sigh

Nydj · 06/02/2021 22:33

@soddingkitten

I have just woken up from a wonderfully refreshing nap on the sofa. Sodding was asleep on my legs and so warm. We’ve just been up for a stretch and toilet break before returning to the sofa. I hope my reading productivity picks up now I’ve had a nap.

I posted a parcel earlier (clothing returns) and bought paneer on the way home. I am determined not to let it go off uneaten like the last pack of paneer I bought. I will find a recipe and a reason to cook with it instead of procrastinating this time. If anyone here has a good paneer suggestion or recipe, please share it.

I am veggie and I think @EggyPegg is too.

A very popular Indian dish with paneer is one called Chilli paneer.

  1. Make a sauce of ketchup, soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce, lime/lemon juice and a small amount of sesame oil - you can add more chillies if you like it hot but we prefer a milder version.
  2. Cut up paneer into 1cm cubed pieces or a little larger if you prefer.
3.Chop up any veggies - we usually use, carrots, peppers, mushrooms and onions.
  1. Put paneer pieces in a wok and heat it up - keep moving and tossing the paneer pieces so that they go a little bit golden brown all over.
  2. Take out the paneer and set aside.
  3. Stir fry the veggies you are using.
  4. When veggies are cooked, add the paneer and the sauce - mix and heat everything and serve on its own or with naan or pitta bread or regular bread.

It’s pretty versatile and if you have any, it’s always worth adding some chopped fresh coriander both, at step 7 and finally as a garnish before serving.

You can add some water with a bit of cornflour mixed in to make the ratio of sauce to other ingredients a little higher without making the taste too intense

If you don’t have sweet chilli sauce, you could use a mix of any hot sauce and sugar.

Nydj · 06/02/2021 22:34

@MissConductUS how are you finding it with your DD away at campus?

MissConductUS · 06/02/2021 23:02

Thank you for asking, @Nydj. It's a bit odd not having her home, but having DS here helps a lot. I was mostly concerned about her finding things she was willing to eat in the uni dining hall and just generally making the transition to being away from home. She's found plenty of things to eat (stir fry is apparently a dinner favorite) and she seems perfectly happy there. If I'm completely honest, I might be a tiny bit miffed that she doesn't seem to miss being home at all, but I mostly see the good in that.

These days I often think of this poem. The arrow has clearly flown.

www.goodreads.com/quotes/115825-your-children-are-not-your-children-they-are-sons-and

"Your children are not your children.
They are sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you.
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For thir souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the make upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness.
For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He also loves the bow that is stable.”

― Kahlil Gibran

I've just noticed that the version of the poem above has several errors in the text. Here is what seem to be a much cleaner version:

www.reading.guru/on-children-kahlil-gibran/

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Thank you for the paneer recipe nydj. I made a smaller portion of the Nadja Hussein spinach & paneer recipe I posted but adapted it into an omelette. It was OK but the paneer needed more robust flavouring like your chilli sauce.

soddingkitten · 06/02/2021 23:31

I didn’t use all of the paneer so I will try yours tomorrow.

Frownette · 06/02/2021 23:53

Does anyone melt paneer? Always fried?

DoctorTwo · 07/02/2021 00:22

On a previous thread I speculated abouta recurrence of pancreatitis. It was, I ended up in hospital for a week (will post a thread elsewhere in the am so as not to merail this one).

littleloopylou · 07/02/2021 00:29

I don't think paneer melts?

Frownette · 07/02/2021 00:31

No, talk about it. Anyone who has been reading is there for you.

mathanxiety · 07/02/2021 00:35

Seconded ^^

MissConductUS · 07/02/2021 00:41

It's completely fine to discuss it here @DoctorTwo.

Silkiechickscat · 07/02/2021 00:59

Sorry to hear about your pancreatisis DrTwo, fine to talk about it here though if you want random non-medical opinions and lots of alternative diagnosis I can also recommend the MN general health board. Grin How are you now?

Silkiechickscat · 07/02/2021 07:44

It's predicted to light snow here all day though it may well be the BBC overpromising again as none yet.

I just did a letter to our solicitors to give permission for them to reclaim stamp duty.

About to have a milky coffee must be about my 10th in the last 24 hours.
