I'm going to get handed my coat and escorted out of here but I'm going to say it anyway.
I do not get people's obsession with drinking!
I don't drink, I don't mind the taste (except ginEnvy), I just don't NEED it if you get me.
I dont particularly like feeling drunk but even just to have one or two drinks doesn't appeal to me...its calories that I don't need and it actually does nothing beneficial for the human body.
All I ever see people on here post is how after homeschooling they need Gin Envy..why? How's it going to help? Why do so many of you need to put a substance in your body in order to feel good? Why not smoke a blunt instead? Why alcohol?
Are you boring without it? Can't you have fun without a drink?

Looking after their kids for 2 hours??! The windup continues.

Are you even a woman?

tootiredtospeak · 22/01/2021 20:11

I dont drink and I dont like coffee. I have a cup if tea every night about 9pm and something sweet. People I know and work with are aghast I dont even drink on a weekend. I dont get the constant discussions of getting through the day so I can have a wine or a gin but we are all different. I think it's just one of the society norms at the moment and to be fair it did used to be more. I need a cigarette but that fad has passed now and that's considered more antisocial. I am not bothered whether others drink or not but I do sometimes worry about a society where parents normalise this around children. I know a lot of people who drink more than the recommended units a week and their kids are watching. Children learn behaviour from parents we might have a generation of alcoholics in ten to fifteen years time.

Coffeeislife04 · 22/01/2021 20:12

I have a couple of gins .. shock horror because I enjoy the taste of it. Only at the weekends I cook my dinner and have a gin to relax. Im not a daily drinker and I don't need a drink to be fun, always first on the dance floor and last to want to leave. Each to there own it doesn't personally effect you so I don't see the need for judgement Confused

I completely agree with you, op. I much prefer a double vodka

iklboo · 22/01/2021 20:12

But people are saying that they don't need a drink all the time - just occasionally - and you're ignoring those, only responding to those who have said they totally agree with you. It's not that black & white.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 22/01/2021 20:13

I used to be like you and then i realised do you know what if it makes people happy then who fucking cares.

devildeepbluesea · 22/01/2021 20:14

Oh good another thread of competitive teetotalism.

JabbyMcJabface · 22/01/2021 20:15

Children learn behaviour from parents...

Not always. I drink a shit load more than my mum!

sodalite · 22/01/2021 20:15

I suppose alcohol can alleviate inhibitions and relaxes people in social situations.
There's nothing wrong with that so long as it's not used as a crutch for nerves or anxiety which is when it can become addictive as well as it can be used to hide emotions people don't want to face.

Most people though just use it to have fun and unwind and there's really nothing wrong with that if it doesn't appeal to you then do something that does.

Robbybobtail · 22/01/2021 20:21

At the moment I’m drinking of a weekend to try and distinguish between midweek (no drink) and the weekend (getting tipsy on a Friday and Saturday) so there is a bit of a difference to break up the monotony of having absolutely fuck all going in on my life except homeschooling, housework and going for the odd walk! It just numbs the boredom a bit I suppose - wasn’t much of a drinker at all before.

Catwoman123 · 22/01/2021 20:21

I just don't get why ones an acceptable mummy hobby and the other isn't

Oh come on! You honestly don't think parents didn't drink in front of their children in the past? Didn't drink nightly or on a regular basis at home or come home drunk? I can disavow you of that. It's been happening for decades.

yahyahs22 · 22/01/2021 20:24

I agree i hate alcohol. You put poison in your body to fe dizzy? Huh??
The smoke a blunt line made me laugh! Even though its easy for me to get it (don't ask) I have an addictive personality so not a good idea!

Coffeeislife04 · 22/01/2021 20:27

I've got a close friend who smokes weed but doesn't drink and you know what I dont judge herHmm. I also have tea total friends and I dont pressure them to drink and they don't judge me. My Dad was an alcoholic and it's one thing I will never be. So who cares 2020 was hard and by the looks of things 2021 is going to be even harder.

Terracottasaur · 22/01/2021 20:27

I don't eat cake either ever

Parties at your house must be a riot

Deadringer · 22/01/2021 20:30

Erm people like different things?
find a new joke it's just not humurous. perhaps you just don't have a sense of humour?

hamstersarse · 22/01/2021 20:31

This thread is making me miss riotous drunken parties with my friends

Thewiseoneincognito · 22/01/2021 20:32

With you OP. I suppose a semi alcoholic Jekyll and Hyde father growing up made me realise the pitfalls of alcohol. I can have the odd G&T or Baileys literally once a month, other than that it has no appeal and has no hold over me in as far as unwinding with a glass frequently.

It shocks me how many weeknight wine drinkers I work with. The idea of a glass of red makes me want to throw up, each to their own. There’s far worse vices with catastrophic health implications than occasional drinking, smoking being the prime example.

When alcohol becomes a constant thread in your life you should stop and think about your relationship with it. If it’s necessary to take the edge off, you need to get rid of the edge.

GrallaceandWomit · 22/01/2021 20:33

I haven’t had any alcohol for months because I’ve just been at home with DH & toddler DS but I love a drink when out with my friends. It’s social, it gives me confidence, it relaxes me. I have many wonderful times with friends whilst sober but the funniest stories are usually the ones where alcohol has been involved. I have a few friends that don’t drink, and we laugh and have a lovely time but they aren’t as funny as the drunken nights where you laugh at ridiculous things together. Now I’m a mum and never drink I do feel extremely boring!

It's never too late to start.
yahyahs22 · 22/01/2021 20:33

Your a woman after my own heart, OP. Women who moan about looking after their own children annoy me so much. Wonder if you live close to me...let's be friends!

Haha, too funny OP.

This is either a total wind up or you are exceptionally thick.

Catwoman123 · 22/01/2021 20:34

@terracottasaur they are!

I understand the people who've said they occasionally drink, that's normal I totally get that.
What isn't normal is not being able to get through the day without one.

And for the pp who said I'd never been drunk..I have, a few occasions but I found I could have just as much of a fun night without it and it wasn't really doing anything beneficial for me.

Catwoman123 · 22/01/2021 20:39

@yahyahs22 don't get me wrong, my children can be little shits and I can't wait until I no longer have to homeschool (I'm a rubbish teacher, not my childrens fault),
but I dont need a bottle of gin at the end of the day in order to cope. I just get on with it and make the best of it.
