Tesco 2 different prices

Tesco charge more if you don't want a club card or pop in the store and forget card...
I have noticed more and more products at Tesco with 2 different prices.
Frankly it has put me off the shop. Seems wrong to force people to use their scheme to pay a set price and over inflatable prices if you don't want a loyalty card
Off to another shop I go.

They don't charge more for not having a Clubcard, those are the normal prices and Clubcard holders are given a discount on ce products, which change frequently.

I have shopped with Tesco for years and the non-discounted prices are the same as they always have been. E.g I like McCain Shake Shake fries, which are normally £1.75. Currently the Clucard price is £1.50 but once the promotion ends on 26 Jan, they will be back at £1.75 for everyone.

If you don't like it you can always get a Clubcard.

Sparklingbrook · 21/01/2021 22:46

Yes, just get a Clubcard.

It's fair enough, people are always moaning they don't get anything for having a loyalty card. Sounds good to me.

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 21/01/2021 22:48

I agree with OP. Puts me off Tesco.

Is an over inflatable price like the ones on Supermarket sweep?

happinessischocolate · 21/01/2021 22:53

I agree OP I forgot my Clubcard one lunchtime so out back the extra things other than my lunch as several had Clubcard discounts and I refused to pay the full price.

I've now downloaded the Clubcard app so it's on my phone, but as I haven't been into Tesco's for over a week my phone needed to download the app again so I spent 10 minutes holding everyone up at the checkout whilst I waved my phone around and it slowly downloaded the app, it worked quicker once I turned off the in store WIFI otherwise I'd probably still be there now.

The data mining of the card info must be worth a lot because it's definitely making them lose sales.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 21/01/2021 22:55

The full price is the same as you'd pay anywhere else, the Clubcard price is the benefit that you get for having a Clubcard and allowing Tesco access to your data.

If you don't want a Clubcard then just pay the full price.

LastTrainEast · 21/01/2021 22:56

That's the point of a loyalty card lol

Generally it's worth it to a shop (any business) to give you a discount if it means you shop there more often. That's how it all works.

Why wouldn't you get a card though? Do you like paying higher prices?

smoothchange · 21/01/2021 22:57

If they stop doing Clubcard prices you will still pay the same.

KilljoysDutch · 21/01/2021 22:58

I once had a tesco assistant ask if another customer could use my clubcard to get the discounts as she'd done a massive shop and didn't have one. They'd been trying to set her one up online but it was taking too long.

Sparklingbrook · 21/01/2021 22:58

That's pretty much my thoughts, I am not understanding the angst really.

Waitrose have a card that allows you to have certain newspapers free if you spend over £10 (and a coffee but not currently). If you don't have a card then you have to pay for the paper and the coffee. Simple.

LastTrainEast · 21/01/2021 22:59

"but as I haven't been into Tesco's for over a week my phone needed to download the app again" that's not correct. Get someone to help you install it properly.

"I spent 10 minutes holding everyone up at the checkout whilst I waved my phone around " I think we can all agree that you'd be happier at waitrose

pophop · 21/01/2021 23:00

There is an app called Stocard it's quite handy for having all your store cards in one place

TheGracefulwhale · 21/01/2021 23:06

I agree with you op. My problem is you also have to pay for a club card membership now. So not only are you not getting the best price for the item, those who do get the best price are effectivly paying twice for the privilege. And if you arnt a club card customer, it feels like you're paying for other people's discounts.
It's also made me avoid tesco and I think overall it will backfire for them

smoothchange · 21/01/2021 23:09

No, you don't.

Sparklingbrook · 21/01/2021 23:10

When did they start charging for membership? DS applied for a Tesco Clubcard last week-no payment required.

SquirtleSquad · 21/01/2021 23:11

They didn't, there's an option to pay for a premium membership which is beneficial if you spend a lot with them - the radfords promote it Wink

HilaryBriss · 21/01/2021 23:12

I've never paid for my Clubcard either.

smoothchange · 21/01/2021 23:13

They haven't. A standard Clubcard is free as it always has been.

There is an optional Clubcard plus which you do pay for but it's hardly used.

Sparklingbrook · 21/01/2021 23:14

Thanks @smoothchange I know for a fact DS would be too tight to pay for a loyalty card. Grin

Porcupineintherough · 21/01/2021 23:15

You don't have to pay for having a Clubcard or to get Clubcard prices. They also have a Clubcard Plus offer for which you do pay, which allows you other additional perks.

Covidcovid · 21/01/2021 23:15

Waitrose have done this for years.

bitheby · 22/01/2021 00:44

I think it's great. I am a single person household and only spend about £40 a week but usually save about £4 with Clubcard prices.

MrsDoctorDear · 22/01/2021 01:07

In the past there have been discounts/reduced prices but you didn't need a clubcard. The yellow label just said 'reduced or offer'.

I noticed this year at Christmas buying a particular whisky the price was reduced £7 for 'clubcard holders'. But when I bought it the year before it was 'reduced/on offer' for everyone.
I only registered for a clubcard this year just to get the normal reduced price. I'd shopped for years without needing a club card just to get the offers.
I keep my tab on my car keys so it's handy.

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2021 05:51

The best thing for me about having the Clubcard is Scan as you Shop. It’s worth it for that alone.

Redrivershore · 22/01/2021 06:05

Waitrose do similar and I think it is good and take advantage of the offers, I shop at both Tesco and Waitrose and have both cards, I also pay for Tesco delivery saver with Clubcard points.
