Tesco 2 different prices

Tesco charge more if you don't want a club card or pop in the store and forget card...
I have noticed more and more products at Tesco with 2 different prices.
Frankly it has put me off the shop. Seems wrong to force people to use their scheme to pay a set price and over inflatable prices if you don't want a loyalty card
Off to another shop I go.

The point is you are not getting anything extra from the club card prices you are just getting the same stuff but now need a club card to get the discount, that is pretty sneaky making people think they are getting something extra from having a club card

dingoesatemybaby · 22/01/2021 11:37

@Givemeabreak88

Yes this bothers me as well, you would not be paying the higher price if you didn’t have a club card as those were the standard half price offers Tesco’s use to do, they’ve now got rid of all offers and changed it to “club card prices” instead, those were the regular offers!!!
No they haven't.

They still do half price and BOGOF offers as well as the club card prices.

I save on average about £20 a week on club card offers so I'm not complaining!

Givemeabreak88 · 22/01/2021 11:51

No they don’t 😂😂 I’ve been doing
My Tesco’s shop for years online and I always go through the “half price” section to see what’s on offer before doing my shop, it use to be pages and pages now it’s 80 items and not one is food, go and check for yourself, god people are so easily fooled aren’t they, most of my online shop was there half price offers now there is no half price food because it’s been replaced by “club card price” go and look now there is not one food item in their half price page online.

Personally I think that those prices should be available to everyone. It just makes u wonder what they are getting in return for having a club card .

Its like mobile phone or insurance costs. U threaten to leave and they throw all.sorts of deals at you. Just offer those prices to everyone ffs. Sure you'd attract enough customers to cover the difference as I'd much rather go to an.honest reputable fairly prices company than one that was a bit more sneaky and tried to blackmail you into your loyalty .

Still.i downloaded a club card ages ago ajd hadnt realised that's what they did as I do tend to do big shops there very often as I prefer morrissons. Can't complain at the 9 quid I saved today though I guess

Angel2702 · 22/01/2021 11:57

It’s no different to them posting discount vouchers for certain products to fly card members. It’s certainly easier to do it this way than having to post individual coupons and expect people to remember to take them to store.

wowfudge · 22/01/2021 12:25

This is exactly how supermarket loyalty programmes work in the US. I for one prefer to get discounts for my loyalty at the PoS, not in the form of vouchers, which were nearly always useless to me and a waste of resources to print and send. It doesn't cost anything to have a Clubcard. Yes, they collate data using it, but why wouldn't they? Supermarket retail is highly competitive and they and the shoppers know there is nearly always a competitor close by. Hence they want to inspire loyalty. It's just quid pro quo.

There are still plenty of deals available to non Clubcard holders. I had stopped using mine until they brought in the in-store reductions.

MrsJBaptiste · 22/01/2021 12:27

I thought the discounted prices in store were if you've paid for Tesco Clubcard Plus?

E.g. Pizza Express pizza = £5 or £2.50 for Clubcard Plus holders.

The usual clubcard doesn't make a difference to the prices whether you have one or not but Clubcard Plus does but then you do pay X per month to be able to get these additional savings.

Ch3rish · 22/01/2021 12:32

No it doesn't, surely everyone knows that what they are getting is your data. Most people are happy to give this up for cheaper food but there's absolutely no need to, Tesco aren't rounding up shoppers at gun point.

The clubcard prices are for everyone with a card, no need to pay anything

Anything with the big yellow lower price is for holders of the normal free clubcard

Tesco aren't doing very well at getting their message across. Grin

Comefromaway · 22/01/2021 12:34

It puts me off. I rarely shop there now except for when dd has to audit them. (they failed last time).

No. The shelf edge label on some products has the price and a discounted price for Clubcard holders. Nothing to do with Clubcard plus

EasyLifer · 22/01/2021 12:46

We have shopped at Tesco for years and got a clubcard as soon as they came out.

We love the clubcard holder discounts, we seem to be spending less and less every week as more and more items are included in the discount.

WanderingMilly · 22/01/2021 12:59

I agree OP, this has put me off Tesco, a store which I normally prefer.

I did realise that the price shown is the 'normal' one and the lower price is the club card discounted one. But the lower price is shown on a bright background and stands out more....you think the goods are at the lower price and then realise no, it's the club card price.

I think it penalises those of us who have chosen not to have a club card. These loyalty cards aren't just to keep you shopping at the same store, they are also used to harvest demographic details, to target offers and in some cases to sell on details. They don't do the discounts for fun and to make it nice for shoppers, it's a marketing ploy to help the store.

I did a digital detox some years ago which included getting rid of all the store cards which tracked where I shopped and what I bought, and which could potentially be used to sell details on or for my stored details to be hacked. You may not agree, but it's my choice, and it feels as though those who choose not to have a card are being penalised.

However, I have recently found that Sainsbury's discounts are applied without any card, and that some of their products are cheaper even than the Tesco discounted price, so sorry Tesco, I'm shopping elsewhere now.....

MrsJBaptiste · 22/01/2021 17:37

Brilliant! I didn't realise I'd got it so wrong! 😮

This has made me think shopping in Tesco again as I'd started thinkung it was much more expensive than Asda (but not Sainsburys!)

smoothchange · 22/01/2021 17:39

I have had a clubcard for 25 years and haven't suffered any ill effects because they know I buy 2 chickens and a packet of rich tea on a Thursday.

Then you'd probably benefit from a club card wouldn't you? 🤷🏻‍♀️
ChildOfTheNineties · 22/01/2021 17:53

I am really happy with the Club add holder discounts and always look out for the offers, some of them really are very good value 😃

Givemeabreak88 · 22/01/2021 18:07

I do have a club card so that’s not really the point, the point was I can see why it has annoyed people, as it’s nothing special they’ve just taken the offers away on their usual prices and changed it to club card, I have one and have for a long while but it is sneaky and there has been times I’ve been caught out because I forgot to bring it.

TheGreatWave · 22/01/2021 19:15

I have a club card, Tesco isn't my main shop but we have an express round the corner, Tesco mobile contracts and it is the supermarket at one of my nearest shops so I am in there on a fairly regular basis. However I don't like the Clubcard Price thing, it just feels a little underhand really, a way of trying to force people to have a card who perhaps before have been a little reluctant to do so.

Tesco does not have a pure vein anywhere in it's body so this is not just some nice thing they are doing.

Onedropbeat · 22/01/2021 19:17

I went in on the rare occasion and noticed this too

It’s also put me off going back and I agree with OP and everyone else feeling the same way

Why does it put you off?

Loyalty schemes offer discounts for members.

If you are not a member it literally does not affect you. If you are, and you can be at no cost or hassle to yourself, you benefit from the offers available.

Givemeabreak88 · 22/01/2021 19:48

Because for the millionth time these were the offers available to ANYONE before they decided to make it exclusive to club card holders, that’s all that’s changed 🙄 why aren’t people getting that!

SleepingStandingUp · 22/01/2021 19:50

@KilljoysDutch

I once had a tesco assistant ask if another customer could use my clubcard to get the discounts as she'd done a massive shop and didn't have one. They'd been trying to set her one up online but it was taking too long.
Did you say yes or no?
TheGreatWave · 22/01/2021 20:37

Because for the millionth time these were the offers available to ANYONE before they decided to make it exclusive to club card holders, that’s all that’s changed so now you either HAVE to sign up for a clubcard or not get the discounts why aren’t people getting that!

It is a supermarket, not some exclusive members club. I think it won't be too long before an advert appears for a rival (Asda?) playing on this and making a thing of offers being available for everyone.

That's bollocks, because there are still offers that don't require a clubcard.. for example they have a Heinz soup offer, 4 for £3 or 8 for £5.

You don't see anyone bitching about the wealthier people who can afford 8 tins of soup getting a better discount than those who can only afford to buy 4.

And who says offers need to be available for everyone? Loads of companies offer things like introductory offers for new customers, but won't give that same discount to existing customers...
