Tesco 2 different prices

Tesco charge more if you don't want a club card or pop in the store and forget card...
I have noticed more and more products at Tesco with 2 different prices.
Frankly it has put me off the shop. Seems wrong to force people to use their scheme to pay a set price and over inflatable prices if you don't want a loyalty card
Off to another shop I go.

I'm not a Tesco bot either I just choose to shop at places that MN seems to disagree with like Tesco and Amazon. I also like the fact that Tesco let me book the online shopping slot 4 weeks in advance and have been very good with this in the past year and I have got my regular slot every week.

Firstinlastout · 23/01/2021 06:40

I noticed at the start of the clubcard offer that they seemed to have put the prices of most things up aswell. Maybe they were due to go up anyway, but it did seem to coincide. I remember mentioning it to my daughter at the time.

Lifeinaonesie · 23/01/2021 06:51

@happinessischocolate

I agree OP I forgot my Clubcard one lunchtime so out back the extra things other than my lunch as several had Clubcard discounts and I refused to pay the full price.

I've now downloaded the Clubcard app so it's on my phone, but as I haven't been into Tesco's for over a week my phone needed to download the app again so I spent 10 minutes holding everyone up at the checkout whilst I waved my phone around and it slowly downloaded the app, it worked quicker once I turned off the in store WIFI otherwise I'd probably still be there now.

The data mining of the card info must be worth a lot because it's definitely making them lose sales.

The data from clubcards is some of the best marketing information there is. It is one of the main sources academics use for marketing research.

I'm not really bothered about supermarkets data mining me, my shopping is quite boring and it might make offers more relevant in some cases.

smoothchange · 23/01/2021 07:41

For example, their own brand pepperoni pizza. It's normally £1.75 but at the moment it's £3.50 with a "club card special price" of £1.75.

It's actually normally £3.50.

notaladyinred · 23/01/2021 07:56

Although it doesn't need re-downloading each time the Clubcard app does require a data connection, which is a pain when the store is in a back hole when it comes to phone signal. It just hangs if there's a weak signal, it's really annoying. There really should be an offline option on the app.

00100001 · 23/01/2021 08:39

@Onedropbeat

You talk of not wanting to contribute to a day harvesting machine.

But you go to a supermarket....which collects data not matter if you use their clubcard it not.

And let's assume you're accessing Mumsnet on an iPhone through Chrome.

Apple potentially know where you are, what apps your using, your name, your financial details, your ISP, your mobile network.

Google know your make and model of phone, your location, your personal data, which websites you browse, when you browse them, how long for, your search history, your ISP,your SIM card number, your Mac address.

Mumsnet knows your IP address, your email, your partial browsing history, they out cookies on your device to target add.

But no Tesco are the devil by wanting to know if you buy Heinz baked beans or Branston Confused

You don’t need data to use it, I even just double checked by turning my phone on aeroplane mode, the app still opens and displays your valid QR code to scan at the till.
notaladyinred · 23/01/2021 09:02

It will work in airplane mode if you have used it with a data connection recently, seems to last a few days. Otherwise it doesn't (right now mine is refusing to load in airplane mode citing No Connection, for example, as I haven't used it in weeks). The QR code actually changes on the app, I don't know why considering that the physical card is static, obviously. I found this out to my annoyance when I would try to pick things up after the gym, when I didn't have any money or cards on me.

NoWordForFluffy · 23/01/2021 09:36

I've not used the app in about 2 weeks as I had a very rare trip to Tesco and it's just worked on airplane mode for me.

My loyalty cards have also added themselves to Apple Pay (I'm pretty sure I didn't do that!), but I've never used them that way.

Do you mean your wallet?

NoWordForFluffy · 23/01/2021 09:52

Yes, probably my wallet. I'm pretty sure I didn't do it though! (See, I'm clueless on this aspect of things!)

Chasingsquirrels · 23/01/2021 09:58

@SusannaSpider

Just checked and Clubcard is 18+. So DD has to technically pay more if she shops. Hmmm.
My ds (now 18 but he's been doing it for a while) has my mini Tesco clubcard and Co-op card and uses them.
wendyleen · 23/01/2021 10:24

I rarely shop in Tesco but it really irritated me when I went in there last time. I just feel like Tesco are constantly out to get/confuse their customers with their 'great' offers.

It's almost as irritating as M&S Sparks where you had to activate the offer to get 5p off a box of quail eggs. Such a great use of my time!

SusannaSpider · 23/01/2021 10:48

I have given her one of mine now. But she is such a rule follower and it makes her uneasy.
That's not really the point though, as they shouldn't be doing something that theoretically makes under 18s pay more.

Nomorescreentime · 23/01/2021 11:06

Those pepperoni pizzas talked about unthread bounce between full price and half price alternately with the pizza express ones. Grin

My overall impression of the new pricing structure is that prices have gone up. I need lockdown to end so my social life can extend beyond supermarkets again and I can stop thinking about this.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 23/01/2021 11:12

I love their Clubcard offers. Enjoying my grey goose vodka for £25. It is NEVER that cheap.

SusannaSpider · 23/01/2021 11:34

Yep, this has been the case since before the Clubcard deals. I freeze the spinach and ricotta ones when they come on offer. Same applies to lots of things, they come on offer in rotation, I never pay full price for Twinnings teabags, though the frequency of those offers seems to decreased. If I had more time on my hands I would be tempted to chart the offers, to look for patterns and plan accordingly, but I don't have that much time!

chocolatespiders · 23/01/2021 11:39

From the club card prices I have seen it is on items that would often be half price but now you have to have a clubcard.
The thought that an under 18 would have to pay more or anyone in fact with the card makes me sad especially in these awful times when people might be popping to the shops.
I also wonder if it was started when the government stopped shops doing offers in the first lockdown that feels like 5 years ago!!

SusannaSpider · 23/01/2021 13:23

Tesco did stop a lot of the multi-buys then, probably to stop people buying more than they needed. And the newstyle Clubcard offers came after that.

AgeLikeWine · 23/01/2021 13:30

Supermarkets in other countries have been doing this for years. Lots of things in Carrefour or Leclerc in France have two-tier pricing for loyalty card holders vs others. I remember getting a Safeway loyalty card when we were on holiday in California a few years ago, as we were going into the local store almost every day and the discounts added up.

SusannaSpider · 23/01/2021 14:56

IKEA have been doing it for years, I'd forgotten about that.

The offers aren't exactly on basic/staple goods. It on things like Doritos and chocolate biscuits and pringles....

And if people are on a tight budget they're not going to be buying a packet of napoloni pasta on offer at (say) £1.50... when they have the Tesco one right next to it for 50p

:/

SusannaSpider · 23/01/2021 17:05

It on things like Doritos and chocolate biscuits and pringles.

The things that your average teen is likely to buy then.

Plus does being on a budget mean you have to pay more for non essentials or accept lower quality goods? That smacks of - 'you're poor, you can't have nice things'. Can't believe people think that is an OK argument.

But no one is preventing those on low incomes from having a Clubcard if they are over 18. It would be different if there was some kind of application process where you may be rejected.

The age limit does negatively affect those under 18 but unfortunately lots of things in life aren't available to under 18s. Eg under 18s can't have a credit card so when they shop online they don't have the added security that a credit card brings
