Tesco 2 different prices

Timeontimeoff · 21/01/2021 21:54

Tesco charge more if you don't want a club card or pop in the store and forget card...
I have noticed more and more products at Tesco with 2 different prices.
Frankly it has put me off the shop. Seems wrong to force people to use their scheme to pay a set price and over inflatable prices if you don't want a loyalty card
Off to another shop I go.

@Givemeabreak88

Because for the millionth time these were the offers available to ANYONE before they decided to make it exclusive to club card holders, that’s all that’s changed 🙄 why aren’t people getting that!
Exactly

And I’m not signing up to some detail harvesting scheme

QforCucumber · 22/01/2021 21:31

Boots have done this for ages with their advantage card just more subtle. There used to be a machine in store where you'd put your card in and it would tell you the offers available. Now it's on the app. I always check if theres any good ones when walking past, it tempts me to keep topped up on cleanser or whatever

00100001 · 22/01/2021 22:03

@Onedropbeat

Sort yourself out woman, you're saying that you're not signing up to some detail harvesting machine.... On the internet, on a device that is sending all sorts of data about you and your activities and device information, on a website that uses cookies to collate your data...

I think it goes beyond customer loyalty and retaining customers but because of the value of our personal data (same reason Facebook is free). I think there will be more and more examples of it becoming more economically viable to give our data away. I think most of us have no idea how companies use our data to predict behaviour. There are some interesting books on it. It is mindblowing and I don't fully understand and I think it is impossible to do much about until governments start to hold companies accountable (data tax perhaps?).

Nomorescreentime · 22/01/2021 23:28

There’s a lot of people defending Tesco on this thread! Very bizarre. I have a Clubcard but the offers are as suspicious as they were when they were available to all. For example, a 300g jar of Nescafe is £4.00 in Asda...if you don’t have a Clubcard it’s £7.50 at Tesco?!

I know this as my DH likes terrible coffee and I’ve just had to add some to my click and collect.

I do feel it’s unfair to change your pricing structure so that people just popping in a rush for an item, or who aren’t regular shoppers, will be penalised. I’m starting to shop elsewhere more these days.

So don’t. And carry on paying normal Tesco price.

Not understanding the apparent level of angst...

£7.49 on Ocado too.

Asda is selling it as a loss leader.

IloveJudgeJudy · 23/01/2021 04:08

It's £5.00 at Asda.

Yeah ok think about that again

I agree Its like Tesco have put bots on here, or some people have been brainwashed by them
Mintjulia · 23/01/2021 04:34

Yes, it's a con OP. For example, their own brand pepperoni pizza. It's normally £1.75 but at the moment it's £3.50 with a "club card special price" of £1.75.

So basically Club Card Prices means overcharging regular customers if they forget their clubcard. The only reason they can get away with it is because they don't call it a special offer. That would be misleading and in breach of trading standards laws.

The answer is to put your clubcard through before ANY of your shopping, or go to another supermarket.

wetwiped · 23/01/2021 04:36

I really appreciate the discounts as a regular customer

Mintjulia · 23/01/2021 04:45

Tesco have a very active PR team who watch Mumsnet like a hawk. It makes me smile sometimes, they are so obvious.

I'm not knocking Tesco, generally I like them and I shop there regularly, but I do wish they would stop thinking their customer base is stupid.

Once, the autoreader at the cash till read my debit card before my clubcard and the checkout lady told me I'd have to be charged the higher prices. Err, sorry, I don't think so. I went to customer services, kicked up a stink (Saturday morning, very busy), demanded to see the manager who didn't have the guts to come out of his office, and made them refund every item off my debit card and then scan my clubcard and put the whole lot through again. All for £1.22. Grin Grin Grin. But they brought it on themselves.

Graciebobcat · 23/01/2021 04:47

It seems dishonest to me and makes me lack trust in them every bit as much as stories like this:

www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/consumer-advice/a566899/tesco-shoppers-over-charged-due-to-pricing-errors/

Plus even their Clubcard prices are expensive, the non-Clubcard prices are exorbitant.

Onedropbeat · 23/01/2021 04:55

Tesco conduct business in a bullish way, buying up small pockets of free holds they don’t plan on using themselves, pushing out small businesses and preventing a fair competition in small and medium sized towns

Not a supermarket I would shop at out of choice, in the same way I would avoid Amazon for online purchases

Onedropbeat · 23/01/2021 04:56

*waits for Tesco bots to come on and list the benefits to the community to counter act their business tactics

Mintjulia · 23/01/2021 04:59

Oh and incidentally, while the Tesco PR team is paying attention, there's a problem with your precooked fresh mussels labelling.

The shelf edge label say £1.20 for 240g (or £5 per kg) but the packs are actually £1.20 for 150g (£8 per kilo). Perhaps you could correct your pricing......Smile

wellthatsunusual · 23/01/2021 05:02

I don't get the angst either. Every business is free to choose their marketing strategy and this is the one Tesco have chosen. Every consumer is free to decide where to shop, and if you dislike a company's marketing strategy or business ethics it's best to vote with your feet and your purse.

Mintjulia · 23/01/2021 05:12

@wellthatsunusual The issue is that not everyone can choose a different supermarket. Some towns only have one and so shoppers are a captive audience.

Also, it is the clear intention to mislead that I find distasteful. And overcharging old ladies or stressed out mums who have forgotten their loyalty cards is a terrible way to treat regular customers.

100% this.

There’s a medium town near my parents

Tesco pushed out all the competition

There are now 5 Tesco’s in and surrounding said town with no option to shop elsewhere driving further away

I’ve no idea how it’s been allowed and it’s certainly not the only town to have it happen

There are news reports on it

SusannaSpider · 23/01/2021 05:23

It's normally £1.75 but at the moment it's £3.50 with a "club card special price" of £1.75.

I buy those pizzas and they are normally £3.50.(£3.68 at our Tesco) I always wait for them to come on offer (which they did even before they changed the offer to Clubcard only). There are cheaper pizzas and they are £1.75 all the time. But the offer ones aren't the same (and aren't as nice).

DD said that she thinks you have to be 16+ to have a Clubcard, she nipped in the other day and had to pay full price as she doesn't have one. If that is the case then they are charging more by age. I keep meaning to check what the Clubcard rules are.

Onedropbeat · 23/01/2021 05:25

This is worth a read for anyone not aware of these captive towns - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesco_Town

SusannaSpider · 23/01/2021 05:27

Just checked and Clubcard is 18+. So DD has to technically pay more if she shops. Hmmm.

Onedropbeat · 23/01/2021 05:29

So really quite unfair unless the offers for club card members were only applicable to age restricted items over 18+

Which they are not

Redrivershore · 23/01/2021 05:39

I only use Tesco online, no store within 5 miles so definitely not a Tesco town and think the Clubcard offers are good, prices are sometimes cheaper at Asda but their online shopping is awful and so is the store which is just down the road from me. I also shop at Waitrose that has a similar type of loyalty card in place. Marks and Spencers food also do offers if you have their Sparks card so I can't see that Tesco are doing anything unusual.
