A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Tightrope by Zayn brought me to tears recently. Beautiful.

Ethicalbrimstone · 19/01/2021 16:35

Wooden Heart by Listener, the lyrics get me every time: Everything falls apart at the exact same time that it all comes together perfectly for the next step.

nomorecheese · 19/01/2021 16:35

@SleepingStandingUp my DH plays Wires and it makes me cry every time. The first time though was when DS1 was a baby and DH told me what the song was about I was inconsolable!

@ ItsNotRainingToday, It's worth being older now, to have been young then.

Kandi by One Eskimo, beautiful song. Not really a romantic song though, lol

FirsAndFairylights · 19/01/2021 16:42

A thousand years, Christina Perri. It just makes me think of my children.

I remember watching the film 'Roger and Me' directed by Michael Moore. One of the pieces was an interview with a guy from Flint, Michigan that had just lost his job at General Motors describing his reaction to randomly hearing 'wouldn't it be nice' on the car radio as he contemplated suicide.

ImsorryWilson · 19/01/2021 16:46

Yes.
It was on "Radio Czeckoslovensko" which will date me nicely.
And it was Diamonds and Rust!
wouldn't trade that first time for all the googling in the world.

Going back a generation more, my mum heard Unchained Melody, bought the record and sat looking at it ever day till my grandpa and grandmother bought a record player.
1955!

Inastatus · 19/01/2021 16:51

@FirsAndFairylights - I love that song!

The Queen and the Soldier, Suzanne Vega - used to make me sob.

Slipping through my fingers, ABBA - now I have a teen DD 😭

ZooeyS · 19/01/2021 16:52

I am by no means a huge Elbow fan but I have a huge weakness for Bones of You - 'then out of the doorway the tentacles stretch of a song that I know and the world moves in slow-mo; straight to my head like the first cigarette of the day'. Makes me immediately tearfully nostalgic for my 20s and my first big love.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 19/01/2021 16:52

@bobdylannumber1

The one that makes me cry is scorn not his simplicity, song by luke Kelly written by Phil Coulter about his special needs son always makes me cry every time,
I can’t even get past the first words of that without tearing up. The Sinead O’Connor version is also heartbreaking.

True companion by Marc Cohen

Divebar · 19/01/2021 16:54

This is the section of Diamonds & rust that I love

“Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling around
And snow in your hair
Now you're smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington Square
Our breath comes out white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there“

I saw an interview with Joan Baez discussing Dylan - I think he was a dick to her hence the comments about her poetry being crummy.

My own heart stopping moment was in 1986 when I heard a song played by Annie Nightingale on the radio called “ I Want You” by Elvis Costello. I did actually feel my heart skip a beat. The last time was watching Chris Stapleton sing “Sometimes I Cry“ live. I don’t listen to either song too often because I want to save the magic of those performances.

Into My Arms by Nick Cave 😭

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 19/01/2021 16:58

@Divebar, love that, a true story teller. Suzanne Vega has that gift too.

Fairly recent, The Mother by Brandi Carlile - who has the most amazing voice. So powerful -

You're nothing short of magical and beautiful to me
I would never hit the big time without you
So they can keep their treasure and their ties to the machine
Cause I am the mother of Evangeline
