A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

@MirandaWestsNewBFF

Joni Mitchell’s Blue album. How could a woman barely out of her teens write songs like that?
It blows me away every time I hear it.
goldpendant · 19/01/2021 17:00

It's pretty cringe, but, "My love, my life" - the Mamma Mia 2 version 🤣

I bawl every time.

MagicSummer · 19/01/2021 17:01

Time to say Goodbye by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Boccelli - I have to have it on really loud and it just reduces me to tears.

Moon River by Andy Williams - so haunting.

Agree with a PP re the crescendo in The Nutcracker - actually lots of ballet music makes me feel tearful.

I would rather go blind by Chicken Shack.

Pashazade · 19/01/2021 17:02

Too many songs make me cry, especially this past year, but I caught Andrea Corr's version of Have yourself a Merry little Christmas (with the original lyrics of "we'll have to muddle through some how") over Christmas and it totally did me in!

Beautiful Soul - Dusty Springfield

SleepingStandingUp · 19/01/2021 17:04
@SleepingStandingUp my DH plays Wires and it makes me cry every time. The first time though was when DS1 was a baby and DH told me what the song was about I was inconsolable!
Yup, I have a NICU baby (he's 5 now) so it just touches that raw spot

MrsExpo · 19/01/2021 17:04

That'll Do Babe by Peter Gabriel. Makes me think of my mum every time.

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/01/2021 17:05

A Different Corner by George Michael. Reminds me of my first love who died of a brain tumour.

Carolwithane · 19/01/2021 17:05

The River - Joni Mitchell
Going Back - Dusty Springfield
Blowing Away - Bonnie Raitt

KaptainKaveman · 19/01/2021 17:06

Things Behind the Sun by Nick Drake will make you feel like that, OP.

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/01/2021 17:08

Also See The Day by Dee C Lee.
And Winter Kills by Yazoo.

CeibaTree · 19/01/2021 17:08

Aww you just brought back a lovely memory of my mum playing diamonds and rust when I was very little ❤️

HensInTheSkirtingBoard · 19/01/2021 17:10

@divebar - 'I want you' takes my breath away as well. Amazing song, never loses its impact.

The ones that make me sob every time are 'This Woman's Work', 'Songbird' (the Christine McVie / Fleetwood Mac version) and, perhaps weirdly, 'Re: Stacks' by Bon Iver. They all make me think of my relationship with my mum.

Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia

trappedsincesundaymorn · 19/01/2021 17:11

Paradise by Bruce Springsteen is also breathtaking, specially when you know what it's about.

Cats in the cradle by Harry Chapin Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits
Brothers in Arms always gives me butterflies

Sam Cooke A Change is Gonna Come came on my Spotify last night and made me emotional

BoreOfWhabylon · 19/01/2021 17:17

Two that stopped me in my tracks - you don't need to understand the language to feel the emotion
Gurrumul - Wiyathul

Pedro Aznar - Vos sos mi amor

Oh, and Barcelona - Freddy Mercury and Montserrat Caballe

The Final Cut/Mother - Pink Floyd
Father & Son - Cat Stevens
Good Year for the Roses - Elvis Costello version

HippyChickMama · 19/01/2021 17:18

Burgundy Shoes by Patty Griffin. It's about a memory she has from childhood of her dm. It's not a particularly sad song but there's just something about it that makes me emotional

wellthatsunusual · 19/01/2021 17:19

If it's heart wrenching music you want, then I give you Last Goodbye by Jeff Buckley. Actually, the whole album Grace can pretty much reduce me to tears.
