A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Forever Young by Alphaville gets me every time

PussGirl · 19/01/2021 16:19

Morningtown Ride - yes

Won't Hold You Back - Toto

& rather embarrassingly One More Sleep - Leona Lewis - real sobs, every time Blush

Mydogmylife · 19/01/2021 16:19

@Ferrylights

The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics. Reminds me of my dad who passed away in Feb, I break down when I hear it
That's my husband's Achilles heel song -, he had a rather disjointed relationship with his late father, and always wished it had been closer, so this gets him every time

The one that makes me cry is scorn not his simplicity, song by luke Kelly written by Phil Coulter about his special needs son always makes me cry every time,

StCharlotte · 19/01/2021 16:20

From The Nutcracker. Particularly at 3:27 and 4:00. It's like a punch in the heart (in a good way).

Nowifi · 19/01/2021 16:21

"Empty" by The Cranberries, so sad and her voice was so lovely! A lot of their songs could set me off actually!

FlamedToACrisp · 19/01/2021 16:21

Jessie by Joshua Kadison...

Mallowmarshmallow · 19/01/2021 16:22

It's Dance with My Father Again by Luther Vandross for me too as PP mentioned. I was NC with my father for many years and I never thought I would see him again (since reconciled).

TheGentleWoman · 19/01/2021 16:22

I had this exact feeling last week after coming across Art Garfunkel's 'I believe (when I fall in love, it will be forever)' I sobbed again whilst listening to it and reading about the tragedy of his ex girlfriend Laurie Bird.

Bob Dylan's Lay Lady Lady also crushes me everytime I hear it.

I Get Along Without You Very Well, especially Chet Baker's version. That last line " Except perhaps in Spring....but I should never think of Spring, For that would surely break my heart in two."

@GlubGlubGlub

Joan Baez has the most beautiful voice. There is no one else quite like her.
She's one of my favourites, from way back then. That song, too. We had the best music, the best singers. Songs that tug at the heartstrings.

@PeaceLoveAndCandy I had the pleasure of hearing her sing that live when she was in London in 1980. (I am older than you :) )

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd, had somehow managed to miss them completely (other than Another Brick in the Wall) from my musical education although god knows how as it's pretty extensive otherwise Smile First time I heard it was when they did it at Live 8 and it completely floored me, that's still my favourite version of it and it still stops me in my tracks.

Seventeen by Janis Ian
Landslide by Stevie Nicks
If I could read your mind by Gordon Lightfoot
The first time ever I saw your face - Roberta Flack
Gloomy Sunday - Billie Holiday (don't listen if you're depressed - apparently linked to suicides)
Something by George Harrison

They send shivers down my spine.

I'm just choosing my DH funeral songs, I'm in pieces here 😭😭😭

CleverCatty · 19/01/2021 16:31

for me - it's Whitney's classics - I didn't know my own strength and I look to you - absolutely sobbing with some of these as both got me through tough times and especially with her - you could tell she was singing and praying for help as she sung.

SlipperTripper · 19/01/2021 16:31

The Leona Lewis cover of Run came on shuffle just after I lost my daughter, while I was bleaching the shower! It hit me so hard, I sat there covered in bleach, sobbing my heart out. My mum and DH had to come and rescue me. It's now the song that brings it all back to me, and perfectly sums up how that experience felt, every step of the way.

Juneau by Funeral for a Friend (obscurish Welsh rockers!) is brilliant too.

Florence and the Machine, you got the love - was DH and I's first dance song, and the lyrics feel really fitting at the moment, dealing with some really tough times and need each other more than ever.

And 100% Joan Armatrading Love and Affection, as per PP. Saw her live the day DH and I bought our first house, doesn't really work lyric-wise, but such a happy time.

Hurt by Johnny cash, makes me cry everytime!

CleverCatty · 19/01/2021 16:32

Ode to Billie Joe (Bobbie Gentry) is another one that makes me tear up and Little Boy Blue - Janis Joplin.

waaaahhhhh Sad

This love will carry ( me) by Dougie MacLean. Has me sobbing every time, even more than his better known Caledonia which to be fair is also a heart squeezer!
