A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

OP posts:
RaveOnThisCrazyFeeling · 19/01/2021 15:13

THIS is my favorite recording of Diamonds and Rust. A TV special from Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue tour in 1976 (which Joan joined him on).

He comes on and does a couple of his classics (Mr Tambourine Man and The Times They Are A-Changin') just beautifully, then he introduces Joan and she joins him for Blowin in the Wind and I Dreamed I Saw St Augustine, and then he leaves the stage and she performs Diamonds And Rust. I love the honesty of the lyrics, and the fact that they're there together anyway, having regained their friendship and never having lost their admiration for one another. Beautiful.

Joan's solo performance of Diamonds and Rust starts around the16.00 mark.

Know exactly what you mean OP because I had exactly the same experience with that song. It’s just stunning isn’t it - so haunting.

The One Who Knows by Dar Williams.

She's my favourite artist of all time and I always liked the song but after I'd had my DCs I suddenly really got it and can't ever listen to it now without sobbing a tear in my eye. In the darker moments of parenting I sometimes play the tune in my head and try to remember what it's all for!

Also by Dar Williams - Family. It's a sad song anyway, but Dar sang it with a parent at a Sandy Hook benefit concert. It was just heartbreaking and that's how I'll forever hear it now.

my gosh this thread has struck a nerve...
i used to use music so much to soothe and comfort me when i was a lonely expat in London
Life got better and busier and I have only just realised that Ive lost this simple pleasure
Going through a really tough existential time right now and I need to listen to some good thought provoking music
Thanks all

So envious of these talented people who can write a song that can make a normal, rational adult tear up just thinking about hearing it.

My contribution is The Leaving Song by Cara Dillon.

allthelittleangelsriseupriseup · 19/01/2021 15:17

I can't make you love me - both the Bonnie Rait and George Michael versions reduce me to a blubbering wreck.

Solsbury Hill
Peter Gabriel.

''Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
(I) just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
"Son, " he said "Grab your things,
I've come to take you home." ''

I'm not much into Peter Gabriel, but when ever this comes on the radio i choke up! If you look for it on youtube so many of the comments are heart-wrenching! Struggling with addictions ect. One poster saying it reminds them of the joy of when they were rescued from an abusive situation; older relative turns up and simply says ''son, grab your things i've come to take you home''.

Amy McDonald's Your Time Will Come.

"And your smile is not like mine,
It disappears from time to time
But I believe in you
And everything you ever do"

Always reminds me of two very dear friends, one of whom is no longer here.

Tangledtresses · 19/01/2021 15:17

Fast cars by Tracey Chapman always makes me cry as it reminds me of being a teen and I drove to Cornwall and had the best holiday ever with my first boyfriend

thenightsky · 19/01/2021 15:19

@Gilead

Another; Alice Cooper’s version of Only Women Bleed.
Oh yes! Brilliant.
SummerHouse · 19/01/2021 15:20

Antony and the Johnsons

Hope there's someone
Who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go
Hope there's someone
Who'll set my heart free
Nice to hold, when I'm tired

I was haunted by this. I heard it and I was open mouthed, lump in throat, couldn't believe what I was hearing.

When is See you smile by bad English gets me 😢❤️

FooFighter99 · 19/01/2021 15:26

Home by the Foo Fighters, gets me every time
Sad

Wish I were with you, but I couldn't stay
Every direction leads me away
Pray for tomorrow, but for today
All I want
Is to be home
Stand in the mirror, you look the same
Just looking for shelter from the cold and the pain
Someone to cover, safe from the rain
And all I want
Is to be home
The echoes and silence, patience and grace
All of these moments I'll never replace
No fear of my heart, absence of faith
All I want
Is to be home
People I've loved, I have no regrets
Some I remember, some I forget
Some of them living, some of them dead
All I want
Is to be home.

nomoreafool · 19/01/2021 15:27

Love of my life. Freddie Mercury.

Literally can't listen to it when I'm in a not so great place in the mind. Makes me cry every single time.

Also she by Elvis Costello
Again another One that gets me.

I remember when I took the dc to see the new version of The BFG

I was in a bad place in my life with a lot of shot going on.

I shut my eyes for a second and the voice of the bfg started and I literally nearly jumped out of my seat.
I couldn't speak for I don't know how long and spent the entire film gulping back every emotion I had.
The voice for bfg is the spitting image of my late grandad. Same accent, same manner, same quips as in the film. Literally every time I hear it I just see my grandad right In front of me.
It takes me right back to childhoods sat in their kitchen peeling spuds and planting in his potting shed and garden.
I can smell their house now
It's shocking how much is comes back in a milli second

Frownette · 19/01/2021 15:27

@Labobo

And America by Paul Simon - that song always punches me in the gut even though everyone has heard it a million times before.
The moon rose over an open field...

I remember a celebrity talking about Dance with my Father again, for the life of me I can't remember who.

I'll listen to the Joan Baez song, haven't heard it

SingingSands · 19/01/2021 15:28

The Promise by Tracy Chapman

It's beautiful and gets me, every time.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/01/2021 15:29

@allthelittleangelsriseupriseup that is the only George Michael track I really love. Didn't know it was a Bonnie Rait cover until very recently.

Confusedandshaken · 19/01/2021 15:29

The Eva Cassidy version of Fields of Gold. I heard it as we drove up a remote road in the northwest of Ireland to look at a plot of land. For once it wasn't raining. The sun was setting and the mountains and water in front of us were reflecting back the light and it was just a perfect blend of sound and vision. We bought the plot of land and it's now our much loved second home. Sadly CoVid means we haven't spent any time there this year and we miss all our friends and family there very much. But our people and the sun and the sky and the mountains are there and we'll be back.

sept2021 · 19/01/2021 15:30

Might not be to anyone elses taste as it's not in english, but korean.

I heard this song about 5 years ago, written in 1990
Although I don't understand the words or what shes saying, its such a powerful song in terms of the melody and the passion she sings with

GhostPepperTears · 19/01/2021 15:30

George Michael gets me every time.

You Have Been Loved and Mothers Pride especially. Both about losing sons, weirdly.

samanthajonespr · 19/01/2021 15:32

John Grant - Glacier

I listened to it a lot when I was going through my miscarriages. I still get a pain in my chest when I hear it.
