A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Letter to Heaven by Dolly Parton. We listened to my Dad's old albums alot as kids (sshhhhh, don't tell) bit this one always stuck with me

TheYearOfSmallThings · 19/01/2021 14:43

I love Diamonds and Rust. It's a great song in itself, but now it's nostalgia on nostalgia - imagine calling someone from your past from a booth on the road somewhere in the Midwest. It packs such a punch.

These days he would be on Facebook posting about conspiracy theories and how many miles he's running, which makes it harder to be blindsided.

Emmy Lou Harris and Gram Parsons

borntobequiet · 19/01/2021 14:44

Sorry Emmylou

NoWordForFluffy · 19/01/2021 14:45

Space by Biffy Clyro brings me to tears almost every time I hear it. It's a stunning track (the acoustic version especially is just beautiful).

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 19/01/2021 14:45
@Cissyandflora. In NZ too. Funnily enough I played it the other day Right back to the relationship I was in then. Sweet sorrow.
Except I'd have sworn it was a decade later... I must have just 'found it' then

Footle · 19/01/2021 14:46

@borntobequiet , don't apologise! Good to hear it.

MrsBennettsSecretSon · 19/01/2021 14:46

Yes, same with that song! Only discovered it recently and am 50!

Also Pulp: “this is hardcore”

And Sia “I’m in here”

I then become temporarily obsessed Grin

Landslide, Fleetwood Mac... Tears every single time.

Little Sparrow, Dolly Parton (happy birthday, Dolly!) It's a traditional Irish or Scottish song. Google her singing it a capella. I've seen her do it live and the hairs on your neck stand up.

Live Forever, Oasis. Cannot hear it without crying. Reminds me of my darling friend at uni; we used to stand about cockily on the dancefloor to it with fags in hand Grin. It's so sad for me because he dropped contact with me after I left our uni city and I still don't know why. And it's from a time when we thought we could have the whole world, a kind of enthusiasm and confidence that has just gone.

Love Will Tear Us Apart, Joy Division. It's the 'again', the way he sings it. So desolate. It makes me catch my breath every time I hear it.

Oooh i adore joan baez Smile her version of brothers in arms is spine-chillingly gorgeous

AtlasPine · 19/01/2021 14:52

I love Sunshine in Leith by the Proclaimers - it makes me tear up in a happy way.

AtlasPine · 19/01/2021 14:52

Really enjoying searching for and listening to everyone’s songs. Thank you!

KnitFastDieWarm · 19/01/2021 14:54

A very young Joan Baez - there’s a teenage girl in the front row listening to her play with with a look of utter joy and reverence and it’s just a lovely bit of film.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 19/01/2021 14:54

Something inside so strong, Labe Siffre.

CheetasOnFajitas · 19/01/2021 14:55

Gosh, yes, Diamonds and Rust is a little-known gem and a beautifully sharp observation of her relationship with Bob Dylan. There is a live album “Diamonds and Rust in the Bullring” (an actual Spanish one, not the shopping centre in Birmingham ha ha) which is amazing.

I also LOVE Jesse @Cissyandflora! I had a Jesse for a few years and that song resonated a lot with me for quite a few years. That combination of knowing that he’s not good for you but damn he’s sexy...

PeaceLoveAndCandy · 19/01/2021 14:56

Crying, duet Roy Orbison with KD Lang is another one

@Ferrylights

The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics. Reminds me of my dad who passed away in Feb, I break down when I hear it
Definitely this one, even thinking of the lyrics makes me tear up "I wasn't there that morning When my Father passed away I didn't get to tell him All the things I had to say

I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years"

And now I'll be heading back from my break looking like have been crying!

Cissyandflora · 19/01/2021 14:57

You’ll know this one then- also 1981. I Hope I Never. Split Enz. Oh my goodness I’ve cried a thousand times over that one. Seen live many many times and always cried.

@nuitdesetoiles

Landslide, Fleetwood Mac... Tears every single time.
I was about to say Landslide too. It's very relevant to where I am in my life. Love it.
