A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

I'm 53 and listen primarily to 60's and 70's music. Mostly rock but I dabble in the Blues and Motown etc.
I beseech everyone to listen to Bettye Swann's Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye or Dorothy Moore's Misty Blue.

Spiegel im Spiegel isn't just a piano piece. It can be played with violin or 'cello (and piano) as well. My preference is for 'cello. k.
version s

I also love Adagio for strings s which can move me to tears if I'm in a melancholy mood already.

This one caught me out big time the first time I heard it Heart sung by Bonnie Raitt 6

Spem in alium - Thomas Tallis
Spiegel im Spiegel Arvo Pärt
Adagio for Strings - Samuel Barber
Days - Kirsty McColl or a re-recording by Ray Davus & The Crouch End Festival Chorus
A Little Bit of Everything - Dawes

And the Racket They Made by King Creosote.

It's just beautiful and the lyrics are so poetic, e.g.

"and I hope the empty shells and bones of your story
will litter and clutter the shore
and I hope that when I find them, I'll remember how they danced,
and the racket they made
when they were alive"

Homeschooling is now out of the window. I’ve got my AirPods in and I’m just smiling and nodding at the children to make it look like I’m interested in them.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 19/01/2021 15:04

Huh. Looks like MN has changed the way you post links - my fault! But the video previews all work, so that's weird! Confused

Housing101 · 19/01/2021 15:04

Had this over the xmas period. With a new song.
Maroon5 - Memories.

I always get a bit emotional at Christmas time and the lyrics just got to me. I always raise a glass to the friends i've lost at that time of year.

Hatstrategicallydipped · 19/01/2021 15:04

This one! Kiss and say goodbye - The Manhattans.

If you can ignore the corny talking bit at the beginning, the lyrics are lovely and the singer's voice is incredible.
I deliberately included the youtube video of them as they're hilarious looking, all in white suits with their dangly bits all neatly tucked to the left hand side. Grin

It randomly came up on a playlist that was playing on youtube. Never heard of The Manhattans, so I presume they were a 1 hit wonder.

MirandaWestsNewBFF · 19/01/2021 15:04

Joni Mitchell’s Blue album. How could a woman barely out of her teens write songs like that?

Labobo · 19/01/2021 15:05

@LunaNorth - Same here. That song just hurts.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 19/01/2021 15:05

Diamonds and Rust is beautiful. I don’t think I’ve heard before either. Spotify suggested Perfect Day by Lou Reed; that’s breathtaking too!

shittestxmasever · 19/01/2021 15:06

I've got one to add. No lyrics but it's just the saddest melody

The light - by the album leaf.

It's played quite a bit in the scandal series during sad scenes and I started watching that again when Dh was diagnosed with cancer so now it really stirs up all those sad, scared emotions. I love it though, such a beautiful piece.

Labobo · 19/01/2021 15:07

@Gingernaut - Days is one of my favourite songs ever.

nuitdesetoiles · 19/01/2021 15:07

In the theme of perfect day... Comfortably numb. Pink Floyd...

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 19/01/2021 15:07

OK, Wounded heart didn't link properly so let's try that again

orangecinnamon · 19/01/2021 15:08

River by Joni Mitchell gets me every time. I only heard it /listened to it properly about 4 years ago strange!

QueenOfPain · 19/01/2021 15:08

Also, Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell but that’s a very obvious one. Very evocative.

Also always got weirdly spine tingly about Red Light Spells Danger by Billy Ocean.

nuitdesetoiles · 19/01/2021 15:09

Lovely Head by Goldfrapp is ethereal and reminds me of the golden days just after DS was born and I used to sing it to him whilst feeding...

lljkk · 19/01/2021 15:09

I recently discovered Story in your Eyes by Moody Blues.
I think I listened to it for 3 days straight.

I try to forget that Baez wrote that song about Dylan because he is such an enormous prick.

Labobo · 19/01/2021 15:09

And America by Paul Simon - that song always punches me in the gut even though everyone has heard it a million times before.

HRPuffinstuff · 19/01/2021 15:10

My offering is One More Light by Linkin Park - it reaches into my very soul every single time.

LouLou789 · 19/01/2021 15:11

Shine on you crazy diamond by Pink Floyd, and:

A few years ago, DH, who is one of those who regularly say “Listen to this!” then spend 40 mins tracking down some awful interview from the Jeremy Vine Show the previous day.....I flung myself into a chair to listen to the latest gem, and he played me “You are the rose of my heart” by Johnny Cash, because he said it reminded him of me 😭😭😭

orangecinnamon · 19/01/2021 15:11

My Mum played Misty Blue on a loop when we were younger.

Also Summer (first time) by Millie Jackson is an amazing song if you like Misty Blue you would love it.

QueenOfPain · 19/01/2021 15:12

I Will Follow You into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie.

Incredibly beautiful lyrics about dying.
