A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

So Ive gone through the spotify playlist and for me I can say my absolute favourite which had me balling my eyes out on my way back from my IVF scan this morning - Be Still - The Killers. Wow.

AtlasPine · 21/01/2021 09:04

@Elfblossom

Kelly Clarkson singing Piece by Piece ... especially the one time she was heavily pregnant and dang it live on Xfactor and she could barely sing the ending for cjokingnon her own emotions.
I just watched that for the first time - so moving!

And to the poster responsible - thank you so much for the Spotify list!

shitinmyhandsandclap · 21/01/2021 09:09

Make you feel my love - it was played at dad's funeral, can't listen to it now

justlliloleme · 21/01/2021 09:17

Long After Tonight is all Over by Jimmy Radcliffe.
My uncle passed away at 55 & my auntie choose to play this at the funeral. The song it’s self isn’t meaningful but at a funeral it’s heartbreaking. My auntie & uncle were teenage sweethearts & lived northern soul & mowtown.
Kills me everytime I hear it now.

justlliloleme · 21/01/2021 09:19

And Heavy by Linkin Park, absolutely brilliant but makes me feel so sad

ginghamtablecloths · 21/01/2021 09:23

Yesterday When I Was Young - Charles Aznavour: a bitter sweet song about looking back on one's youth with many regrets.

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

A Horse With No Name - America: late husband's all time favourite which we played at his funeral.

What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

Eyes of Blue - Paul Carrack

Tattygran14 · 21/01/2021 09:44

Has anybody said The ballad of Jimmy Brown? It gets me every time.

Pickwickpapers · 21/01/2021 09:47

Slipping through my Fingers.
Can feel my throat tighten and eyes sting just at the thought of it. 😭

Sassanacs · 21/01/2021 09:57

Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd - first time i heard it it transported me back to the 70's (despite being born in '82!) Still gets me every time I hear it.

BeBopaLula75 · 21/01/2021 10:23

Took my mum to see Joan Baez in concert as a surprise, she always talked about how much she loved her but I hadn't really heard anything other than one or two songs. Anyway, she sang Forever Young and oh my days, I was in pieces. I still can't listen to it now, 11 years later, without the tears flowing. It's beautiful and her voice is so haunting.

HaveringWavering · 21/01/2021 10:34

@Mamapanya

For me, it has to be 'She used to be mine' - Sara Bareilles, from the musical Waitress.

I can relate to pretty much every word, and can't listen without sobbing. I imagine this song would speak to anyone who has ever struggled; with the choices they've made, the challenges life has thrown at them or with the difference between how their life is and how they thought it would be.

These lyrics:

'If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back
For a chance to start over
And re-write an ending or two
For the girl that I knew

Who was reckless just enough
Who gets hurt
But who learns how to toughen up
When she's bruised
And gets used by a man who can't love'

Like a sucker punch to the gut, every time. Such a beautiful song.

Saw Sarah perform this live in Waitress in London. It was phenomenal.
HaveringWavering · 21/01/2021 10:34

Sara.

Menopausalcraziness · 21/01/2021 10:38

For me, it’s Against All Odds by Phil Collins (the cover versions I can’t listen to)!
I haven’t seen the film and can’t tell you why; it doesn’t have any memories attached to my life but it always gets me.

Buggersticks · 21/01/2021 11:35

I've just asked Alexa to play it 😊

Spiegel im Spiegel is utterly beautiful, I've heard it at the ballet (Dracula!)

I had a moment when I first heard Michael Bolton sing Ave Maria (with Placido Domingo)

Buggersticks · 21/01/2021 11:36

Forever Young is a beautiful track. Didn't Bob Dylan write it about his son?

luckylorca · 21/01/2021 11:44

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton also makes me howl:

  1. It’s absolutely gorgeous music and
  1. He wrote it for his little boy - who ran through their flat and just flew/fell through the open window of their skyscraper to his death. 😢😢
Buggersticks · 21/01/2021 11:49

Smudge... Brilliant choice, listening to it now. I saw her in concert decades ago.

CarriMarie · 21/01/2021 13:29

From way back it has to be Honey by Bobby Goldsboro.

Since losing my Dad and having a grown up daughter, Dance with my Father and Slipping through my Fingers can both bring a tear or two.

One that caught me by surprise was Even Now by Barry Mannilow, the words brought up feelings I didn't know i still had.

lukins66 · 21/01/2021 13:44

Every time I hear Tiny Dancer it gets me!
It really makes me feel very emotional about DD, in a happy way!

mamaandbabas · 21/01/2021 14:21

Ohh so many songs make me cry. I Don't Wanna Talk About sung by Tracy Thorn. Seasons in the Sun. Please Stay.

BikeRunSki · 21/01/2021 14:26

Athlete - Wires

CarriMarie · 21/01/2021 14:56

Seeing it mentioned above reminds me that I heard Yesterday when I was Young by Charles Aznavour at a funeral and it sounded so personal to the deceased, could almost hear him singing it.

IntermittentParps · 21/01/2021 15:06

I think I read a version of the 'He ain't heavy, he's my brother' story where the boy's brother was dead rather than disabled. It's a gut-punch either way.

I also remembered The Ship Song by Nick Cave. Not sad as such, but the sheer hugeness of the imagery moves me to tears and takes my breath away.

Clawdy · 21/01/2021 16:02

I remember reading another version of the "He ain't heavy" story in a little book of uplifting anecdotes, published in the 1950s - The Friendship Book Of Francis Gay! It describes a group of children in a children's home, posing for a group photo. One girl was holding a toddler in her arms. One of the staff said "Isn't he too heavy for you, Mary?" The girl replied "He's not heavy, miss - he's my brother!"

It's quite an old story.

Mine is Comfortably numb... Pink Floyd
Decades later, the harmonies still give me goosebumps
