A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

In The End by Linkin Park is hard to listen to after Chester passing, it seems almost a cry for help now

Madhairday · 20/01/2021 23:58

This thread has made me cry!

I can't listen to Gold Forever by The Wanted without blurting. DD sang it in y6 leavers assembly and I just realised how quickly the years were going and that I wanted to hold onto them.

Boulder to Birmingham with Emmylou Harris.

Jar of Hearts and a Thousand Years by Christina Perri.

Prettiest Eyes by The Beautiful South.

Sunshine on Leith by The Proclaimers.

Good year for the Roses by Elvis Costello.

Shades of Michaelangelo by Belinda Carlisle.

Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits.

Anything by Joni Mitchell.

And so many more.

Diamonds and Rust is beautiful I love it. I have seen Joan Baez twice live she is absolutely amazing 🤩

ScatteredMama82 · 21/01/2021 00:09

I’m watching this thread so that I can make a playlist of all these tomorrow!

ScatteredMama82 · 21/01/2021 00:12

Into the west by Annie Lennox, I can listen to it over and over.

HaveringWavering · 21/01/2021 00:54

This is a bit of a niche one, but any Spanish speaking Mumsnetters may know it.

It has a little bit of a similar feel to Diamonds and Rust.

ilovesooty · 21/01/2021 00:56

@GlubGlubGlub

Joan Baez has the most beautiful voice. There is no one else quite like her.
I've seen Joan Baez live twice. Incredible.

The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell always makes me think of my eldest grandson, for some reason. He is far away in America now and the song makes me miss him more than ever.

I wish I knew how it would feel to be free - Nina Simone

Elfblossom · 21/01/2021 01:31

Yes! My DH and I were blown away by that performance!
HaveringWavering · 21/01/2021 01:39

Think it was American Idol though.

CreakingatTheWhinges · 21/01/2021 01:42

Loving this thread & can't wait to listen to many of these in the morning.

A selection of ones that get me every time, for variety of reasons:

Rocket Man - Elton John

Don't you - Simple Minds

You do something to Me - Paul Weller

For Your Babies- Simply Red

One Day Like This - Elbow

The dock of the Bay - Otis Reading

Side - Travis

Midnight Sky - Miley Cyrus

“Angel” by Sarah McLachlan.

I sob each time I hear it. Haunting and beautiful. I know it was about a male singer but it always makes me think of a mum who is grieving for their child.

Mamapanya · 21/01/2021 01:46

For me, it has to be 'She used to be mine' - Sara Bareilles, from the musical Waitress.

I can relate to pretty much every word, and can't listen without sobbing. I imagine this song would speak to anyone who has ever struggled; with the choices they've made, the challenges life has thrown at them or with the difference between how their life is and how they thought it would be.

These lyrics:

'If I'm honest, I know I would give it all back
For a chance to start over
And re-write an ending or two
For the girl that I knew

Who was reckless just enough
Who gets hurt
But who learns how to toughen up
When she's bruised
And gets used by a man who can't love'

Like a sucker punch to the gut, every time. Such a beautiful song.

Angliski thanks going to play those songs tomorrow 😪

Mother and Child Reunion by Paul Simon

Heard it on Zoe Ball a couple of years ago but had somehow never heard it before. Lyrics give me hope that somehow we'll meet those we've lost again - genius song and normally I loathe Paul Simon

fartypantsmummy · 21/01/2021 06:41

So many lovely songs here - thanks

Kndg · 21/01/2021 06:46

@Madhairday
Our DS had the same song at his Y6 Leaving assembly - I was in pieces when I saw the lyrics on the programme, this in particular

Butterflies, butterflies, we were meant to fly,
You and I, you and I, colors in the sky,
We could rule the world someday,
Somehow but we'll never be as bright as we are now.

Aspiringmatriarch · 21/01/2021 07:00

@poppet31

For me it's 'this is me' from the greatest showman. We had just been shown a profile of our now son who we adopted. We were deciding whether to proceed with the match as our son had more needs than we were expecting and we had some doubts. This song came on and I remember hearing the words 'and I know that I deserve your love. There's nothing I'm not worthy of' and just knowing that he was the one and he absolutely deserved a family. I can't hear it now without welling up thinking in some parallel universe, he isn't mine.
This is so beautiful. All the best to you and your lovely boy.
MockneyReject · 21/01/2021 07:10

1916 by Motorhead. It's a war poem, like so many others.
But I can't bear it. I skip it if Spotify puts it on in the car. I have two boys and the the thought of them crying for me, and me not being there, is just too much. Especially because it happened and all those mothers will know it.

Sunnysideoftheshite · 21/01/2021 07:50

I can't make you love me by Bonnie Raitt

deedeegee · 21/01/2021 08:09

Fire and Rain by James Taylor - reminds me of a former lover who died of cancer. I always wanted to have one last conversation to tie up the loose ends of our relationship, but never got the chance...
