A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Little green, circle game and most songs (not big yellow taxi) by Joni Mitchell make me weep and feel regret for passing time

OhsoGood · 20/01/2021 18:46

This is my track that stops me in my tracks! There's always a few tears towards the end
"Adagio for Strings, from Platoon"

smilingontheinside · 20/01/2021 18:48

I'm not in love - 10cc (break up with first serious boyfriend, never really recovered)
In Dreams-Roy Orbuson, reminds me of my mother
SOS - Avicii
The last one some would possibly think odd as I'm in my 60's but I love rock, pop and dance music (big clubber in 70's & 80's).I like a lot of the current musiic, this one just makes me feel so sad that young lives are lost to drugs and alcohol when they get the fame they've craved.

Pommersy · 20/01/2021 18:54

Pearl Fishers Duet - Bizet. Don’t normally listen to opera but the chorus is stunning and sends shivers down my spine.
She used to be mine from Waitress the musical. Only heard this recently and makes me cry.

Bright Eyes - Simon and Garfunkel. Haunting

River by Joni Mitchell

NearWildHeaven · 20/01/2021 18:57

@nuitdesetoiles

Landslide, Fleetwood Mac... Tears every single time.
This one for me too.

Every. Single. Time.

Twattergy · 20/01/2021 18:57

'Being Alive' by Sondheim. First time I heard it was Adam Driver singing it (wonderfully!) at end of the amazing film Marriage Story. Looked it up, oh my god...the words.....and I don't like schmaltzy musicals. Massive tears every time.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 20/01/2021 18:57

Two songs off the same album - Rites of Passage amd Incomplete by Fish are real tearjerkers for me.

Now and Forever by Richard Marx - wanted it as our wedding song but went with something else instead because we were torn between the two.

Twattergy · 20/01/2021 18:59

Mirrorball by Elbow. Delicate beautiful powerful.

honeybee88 · 20/01/2021 19:02

Yesterday - The Beatles

sophiaheulwen · 20/01/2021 19:03

For me it's Birds by Neil Young. Oh my God, the memories. Also, Hey, that's no way to say goodbye' by Leonard Cohen. Both are enough to make me a quivering wreck and reach for the packet of fags that was always to hand in 1973..

Lunar2020 · 20/01/2021 19:05

If the song has you in tears then do not watch the video for SA’s Runaway Train

SycamoreGap · 20/01/2021 19:07

I saw her live in Manchester a few years ago - she was amazing.

For me it was Nick Cave - The Weeping Song.

Shell4429 · 20/01/2021 19:10

I recently discovered two songs from late 60’s/early 70’s that give me goosebumps and make me emotional. Reflections of My Life by Marmalade and Softly Whispering I Love You by the Congregation. Both beautiful songs.

@Pommersy Bright Eyes came up on my Spotify once and I’m not kidding, I had to take myself off the street and round a corner because I couldn’t stop the tears.

I heard a cover of Racing in the Streets (originally by Bruce Springsteen) by Emmylou Harris on the radio once and that was another one that had me sobbing. Actually loads of Emmylou - her and Gram Parsons doing Love Hurts 😭

welshdragonlady · 20/01/2021 19:15

Indiana wants me. By R Dean Taylor an old song but always brings me to tears.

Angliski · 20/01/2021 19:15

Enjoying adding to my playlist - thanks all.

Mine are

Walk away, Ben harper

Arms of the angels, Sarah mclachlan and

First time I saw your face, Roberta flack

HarrietsweetHarriet · 20/01/2021 19:25

Those that immediately spring to mind:
Spem in Alium - Thomas Tallis (I chose this for my mum's funeral)
Moments of Pleasure - Kate Bush
The Sensual World - Kate Bush
Wild is the Wind - David Bowie
Tiny Dancer - Elton John
Landslide- Fleetwood Mac

In fact, so much music has made me cry in recent months, I'm finding it hard to listen to much at all.

Merryweather80 · 20/01/2021 19:33

Hello by Lionel Richie I was 7, my grandad - the greatest man in the world, had died following a stroke a few days before. I was going to see him in the hospital that day and he died hours before I got to see him. I have to turn the radio off. I still can’t listen to the song, I’m now 40.

Minerbird · 20/01/2021 19:34

It’s not just me then x

IrishNinja · 20/01/2021 19:36

Theme from Schindlers List - just make me think of girl in the red coat, gets me everytime.
Con te Partiro Andrea Bocelli - played at moms funeral, just beautiful. Something about his voice that makes my soul soar.
Hurt Christina Aguilera makes me think of mom and dad and all the things I wish I'd said
The Drugs Don't Work The Verve makes me think of moms cancer. Very literal take on the song but it was very true.
Rule The World Take That. I used to sing this to my belly when I was pregnant. I'd had a few miscarriages, and was listening to this when I felt my first kick. It became our fight song.

I blart a lot BTW Grin

Minerbird · 20/01/2021 19:36

I have 2 more, these are my tearjerkers:

  • George Michael “I can’t make you love me”
  • Alexander O’Neal “If you were here tonight”
Tessabelle74 · 20/01/2021 19:42

Who Am I? By Will Young, the words sum up a situation many of us have found ourselves in and it's heartbreaking. I love him anyway but it's my favourite song in the world

TemptingTess · 20/01/2021 19:47

First Man by Camilla Cabelo about her love for her father and how hard it is to leave home when you grow up
