A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

February Song by Josh Groban

Shameless place mark so I can look some of these up!

ScrambledSmegs · 20/01/2021 18:00

This Woman's Work - honestly I can hear the intro and be in tears. Same for DH. So much so that when he got a tiny piece of grit in his eye, he put the song on so he could cry it out!

Nickel Creek – The Lighthouse's Tale

this one always gets me :(

mrbreezeet1 · 20/01/2021 18:03

I vaguely remember it, I'll have to Google it......
I do remember the title though, I used to like her a LOT in the 70's

Skyelils · 20/01/2021 18:03

Cherish kook and the gang gets me everytime

restingbitchface30 · 20/01/2021 18:06

Mine is come alive by Foo fighters. Very powerful song and can’t believe I went so many years not hearing it.

shergar · 20/01/2021 18:07

Angel by Eurythmics. When I first heard it in my 20s it made me a bit choked to think one day my mother would die and then it would be unbearable to hear. Mum died of cancer about 20 years later, and now I can’t listen to it Sad

letsdothetimewarpagain · 20/01/2021 18:08

Mother's Pride by George Michael. Used to make me cry every time I heard it, but I haven't been able to listen to it at all since I had my first son, so that'll be 21 years now...

Moneypenny08 · 20/01/2021 18:08

@magicstar1 Thank you for introducing me to this song. My Dad is a big Elvis fan but I've never heard this before. It's beautiful.

Track that always gets me is Songbird by Eva Cassidy..

jigglybits · 20/01/2021 18:10

Kansas- Dust in the wind

RealisticSketch · 20/01/2021 18:12

First time this happened to me, I was a child, it was before motherhood made me a soppy eejit, so the tears were all the more remarkable... It was Mike and the Mechanics, The Living Years.

PigWhisperer · 20/01/2021 18:14

Have we had "Songbird" yet? Fleetwood Mac just edges it over Eva Cassidy for me, but both beautiful.

Carpedimum · 20/01/2021 18:16

‘All That I Bleed’ by Savatage is a hard one for me, and James’ ‘Moving On’ has had me bawling at times. Do watch the video, it is exquisite in its conveyance of letting a loved one go. The lines “leave a little light on” and “see you next time” bring a tear to my eye without the whole song!

KAW23 · 20/01/2021 18:17

A strange one maybe, but Weezer - Say it ain’t So. The lyrics cut me to my core:

Say it ain't so
Your drug is a heart breaker
Say it ain't so
My love is a life taker

It was a song that me and a friend loved, he moved away and cut off all his childhood friends some years ago, I think about him all the time and still miss him.

Gram Parsons’ - Streets of Baltimore - I just find the lyrics so sad. My parents played that album a lot when I was little and it just reminds me of my childhood I too.

PeachMelba78 · 20/01/2021 18:18

Heart for Rent by Caitlyn Scarlett. Also Nightmares by her - she’s great and totally underrated.

Fatredwitch · 20/01/2021 18:19

Diamonds and Rust is beautiful and I love the way it begins, "Well, I'll be damned..." Joan Baez has an incredible voice.

We played Sisters, Now Our Meeting Is Over by Libana at my mum's funeral and I can't listen to it now without crying. It's the same few lines repeated but it's lovely.

I was sitting in a car park when Poor Wayfaring Stranger sung by Rhiannon Giddens came on, and I sat there and wept. I think that it was the line "I'm going home to meet my mother" that got me, and then she's going home to meet her father, and it made me think of my parents who are both long gone.

ChameleonCircuit · 20/01/2021 18:19

My guaranteed sobfests are Garth Brooks The Dance, and Kathy Mattea Where’ve You Been. 🥲

Ljcoolgran · 20/01/2021 18:24

Songbird by Fleetwood Mac
Joni Mitchell (everything she ever wrote)
My daughters chose Days by Kirsty Mcoll and This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush for their dad’s funeral

talesofnottinghill · 20/01/2021 18:29

Joan Baez, beautiful, there are so many great songs from this era that haven't been heard for years...thanks to spotify etc. they can be rediscovered.

Listen to Jeff Buckley 'Lilac Wine', it's from the 90s but his voice is wonderful. On the 70s folk vibe there's also Nick Drake and Vashty Bunyan, her first album is awash with lovely songs...I'm so glad you were moved by the song, that's what they're meant to do, the good ones anyway!

Tirtytreeandaturd · 20/01/2021 18:31

Absolutely. I sob like a baby when I hear this - ridiculous really as it evokes memories of my father who has been dead for 40 years .

cavalier · 20/01/2021 18:32

Time in a Bottle
Song by Jim Croce

It’s beautiful ❤️

talesofnottinghill · 20/01/2021 18:33

'Who Knows Where Does the Time Go' sung by Sandy Denny does it for me too if we're still on a 60s/70s folk trip...
