A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

"Wild World" by Cat Stevens. A friend of mine's father was lead singer in a local (very popular) band. They played that song, and he dedicated it to her at our graduation party.

Yep! Love Diamonds and Rust. Same thing happened to me with Eblouie Par La Nuit by Zaz. It’s in French but trust me the sound will punch you in the stomach even if you don’t understand a word.

LizzyA123 · 20/01/2021 20:19

I’m going to leave Old Durham Town by Roger Whittaker, my Dad used to play this a lot when I was little.

What a great thread. So many beautiful songs. As well as a few mentioned, I'd like to add the theme from Last of the Mohicans.

‘Hurt’ by Johnny Cash. Omg, the pain and rawness of that song... and the video... makes my heart ache every time...

AnnieKenney · 20/01/2021 20:23

Dory Previn - The lady with the braid - so haunting.

Elvis Costello - Good year for the roses - perfectly captures that period after a previously loving relationship has now ended

Purplealienpuke · 20/01/2021 20:23
I love this version out of all the Hurt versions. I absolutely cannot listen to this anywhere but home. Its on my funeral playlist. As is this, just beautiful. I was lucky enough to see them doing this live. Never to be repeated or forgotten! This song is just beautiful, what a voice. She gives me goosebumps. This song is really poignant in my life. I found Lotte Kentner by happy accident. Just, well , this. As you can probably tell my love life is crap 🙄🤣 Those Damn Crows are awesome 👍 And finally something a little off beat... One of the Rizzle Kicks !! I hope I've shared stuff you might like to add to your catalogue and maybe take you down a rabbit warren of new music 🎶 😉

I find I can’t listen to Dance with My Father Again by Luther Vandross without having to go for a little sit down

Yep, one of the few sogns that makes me teary.

Also when I first heard 'Love Anyway' by Mike Scott (in 1997 when it was released), I cried.

It's THE song about unconditional love, and coming from a man - I cried because I never found a man who could love like that and being young I was still a big romantic while my marriae at the time was crumbling. I still haven't met anyone who could love like that, but I now know it's just very rare, nothing personal - still find the song touching though.

Henio · 20/01/2021 20:25

This song had me in tears when I first heard it
