A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

“ Find Your Love” by Beth Neilson Chapman. It was in the film “ The Calendar Girls” & I loved it then but one day it came on the radio in the car & I had to pull over because I couldn’t see from crying. She has the most beautiful clear voice & the lyrics are so powerful. I lost a dear friend to COVID in May & this song has really brought me comfort.

Adagio for strings - Samuel Barber.

I first heard it played at Last Night of the Proms after 9/11 and I cried.
It was also used for an emotional scene in Outlander.

I’m listening to Spiegel im Spiegel now for the first time and I’ve got tears...how beautiful with that simple melody playing throughout

Ihatefish · 20/01/2021 17:36

Through the barricades -spandau ballet
Tears of the dragon -Bruce Dickinson
Bread and fishes/wind in the willows -Blakemores night version

All for very different reasons

I've recenly heard a repeat of the programme "Inheritance Tracks" on R4 (originally recorded in 2016) where Joan Baez chose it as one of the tracks she loves, despite the fact that its about her relationship with Bob Dylan. Apparently she still sings it regularly on-stage but changes the years in the line about the cuff links to reflect the time that has passed since then.

Benjispruce2 · 20/01/2021 17:37

Yes @Minerbird I agree.

It was 2001 and I was driving just down this road here, and I had the radio playing, when suddenly the most divine version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow came on. It was exquisite. Gone was the bombast of the other versions, but a version that was just ---hopeful? I began crying and had to pull over, hey I'm a male rock drummer I didn't want to have to explain to the police why I'd crashed. It was of course the late and very lamented Eva Cassidy, who could teach a thing or two to these divas, who belt out a song at a million decibels, and trill all over the place on one word. You know who you are Maria! Eva just sang the song although changing around the melody, but with such heart and soul.
Thank you for posting this.

Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
Reminds me of my Dad

Kate bush woman’s work. First heard it in a Kevin bacon film many years ago and cried like a baby. I had an end of life patient ask if I knew it and to sing it to her. I was so chuffed that I did and I obliged very willingly and enthusiastically...she told me to stop after the first verse and made us all laugh so much. Always cry when I hear it. These days it has to be Angel by my side by love for the people. Especially when accompanied by the video, it’s close to home for a lot of us and I imagine I’ll still cry at even the opening bars for the rest of my life

Ihatefish · 20/01/2021 17:47

@BarelyMerry

Disturbed do a phenomenal version of Sound of Silence. Can't get to the end without sobbing
There’s a guy on you tube called Dan Vasc who does an amazing cover of this version
Darkrainbowsquid · 20/01/2021 17:47

Holy night (the Christmas carol) makes me well up everytime

Santiago1 · 20/01/2021 17:47

The original version of Hurt, by Nine Inch Nails makes me bawl. So does Waiting for my Real Life to Begin, by Colin Hurt. Heard it on Scrubs years ago, and it's such a beautiful song 😢

roxanne119 · 20/01/2021 17:47

If your looking for a way by odyssey makes me cry .

Diamonds and Rust is a stunning song isn't it ?
My song is 'Too much love will kill you 'by Brian May

Santiago1 · 20/01/2021 17:49

Colin Hay.....🙄

Pleasethinkbeforebuying · 20/01/2021 17:50

Tripped up by the song or the message?
It's one of many beautiful songs sung by Joan Baez and unusually this is one she wrote - obviously (or should that be maybe) her time with Bob Dylan had some influence

PopMaster34112 · 20/01/2021 17:51

Dance with my father was played at my dads funeral, every time I hear it I am taken back to that day.

nando7777 · 20/01/2021 17:51

Love Diamonds and Rust - I first heard this by Judas Priest and still love that version but sung by Joan Baez it's just perfect, as is anything by Arvot Part.

Mazzini · 20/01/2021 17:54

@Minerbird

Adagio for strings - Samuel Barber.

I first heard it played at Last Night of the Proms after 9/11 and I cried.
It was also used for an emotional scene in Outlander.

That’s a beautiful piece of music that’s been used a lot in films. The first time I heard it was in Platoon, as the haunting accompaniment to very harrowing scenes.
