A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Oh and also Spread your wings and fly by Queen but I cant listen to that song without actually sobbing for hours.

NavyFlask · 20/01/2021 12:50

Nothing Touches by New Model Army
and
Trains by Porcupine Tree

And weirdly The Story of The Blues by The Mighty Way (but just because of what was going on in my life first time I heard it)

George Michael - My mother had a brother.

Queen - Who wants to live forever -my mom had this at her funeral. Still cant listen to it without sobbing

Elvis -Blue Christmas -mom was an Elvis fan, I cant stop crying when I hear it. It came on TV Christmas morning while kids opened presents and the floodgates opened. Kids were looking at me like I had gone nuts!! :))

Tell me there's a heaven by Chris Rea.

fizzybootlace · 20/01/2021 13:27

So many beautiful songs here!!

I dont think it's been mentioned but "Dont worry about me" by Frances is amazing, it came out while my mum was having her cancer treatment and takes me right back. Appropriate for the current situation and ❤ to all those caring for sick loved ones xx

The Luckiest by Ben Folds

Fatarseflanagan09 · 20/01/2021 14:26

Cats in the cradle.
Everybody hurts, it reminds me of my son when he was treated horrible by his ex gf.
Honey, by Bobby Goldsbrough I think.
Don't give up. Kate Bush.

Do you know what strikes me from some of these song choices? I often feel that men don't 'feel' as much as women, or that they don't appear to experience emotions as strongly as women. However, listening to some of these songs, written by male artists, about children, loss and love, it actually disproves my theory. Nice mixture of themes too. Excellent work by the technologically capable poster who compiled the spotify playlist too!

Since I was quite young I've thought this, I think woman tend to get into a mode of practicality and motherhood and men silently get on with getting in touch with their feelings and expressing it in music.

@Weirdfan

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd, had somehow managed to miss them completely (other than Another Brick in the Wall) from my musical education although god knows how as it's pretty extensive otherwise Smile First time I heard it was when they did it at Live 8 and it completely floored me, that's still my favourite version of it and it still stops me in my tracks.
Yep good song.

Dunno if it's already been said but The River - Joni Mitchell.

thenovice · 20/01/2021 17:21

In the Living Years (Mike and the Mechanics).
Since my dad died.

I think a lot of people in Northern Ireland have a particular aversion to Cats in the Cradle.

Little lights by Passenger. Makes me weep...

LushAlice · 20/01/2021 17:26

This happened to me, also with 'Diamonds and Rust' (only about 10 months ago). It had completely passed me by in the 70s. Brought back very real feelings of love long since lost. Still get the 'feeling' when I hear it.

Firstbabyrose · 20/01/2021 17:26

I always cry when I listen to Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 20/01/2021 17:27

Bridge over troubled water - gets me everytime.

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 20/01/2021 17:27

And lots of Kate Bush songs.

numberoneson · 20/01/2021 17:28

For me it was "Jealous of the Angels" sung by Donna Taggart. Heard it first and was blown away, just a few months before my lovely, lovely husband died last May of Covid-19, and played it as the main song at his funeral.

Julia001 · 20/01/2021 17:30

Joanne by Lady Gaga , it was sent to me after my daughter died. Gets me every time.

vestastilly · 20/01/2021 17:31

@PeaceLoveAndCandy this is literally my most favourite song ever. The first time I heard it it made me cry! I play it often and love it dearly.

EngiNerd · 20/01/2021 17:31

Last Kiss - Pearl Jam's remake or the original (J Frank Wilson). I first heard it while on vacation to another state as a teen in the early 2000's. I was in the car with my aunt and cousins and bawled my eyes out. Get's me every time, even today when I just youtube'd it!

Mazzini · 20/01/2021 17:33

Solitaire, sung by Neil Sedaka. My mum loved it in the 1970s and I cry spontaneous tears when I hear it now... It opens with the lyric.. “There was a man, a lonely man, who lost his love through his indifference” You know it’s going to get you...
