I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

The Cranberries - Linger
Elvis Costello - Shipbuilding
Aerosmith - Don't Want To Miss A Thing (but it's mainly because of the Christian the Lion video which makes me cry hysterically and I'm not allowed to watch it any more)
London Grammar - Strong
Roberta Flack - The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face
The Cars - Drive

Gloria Estefan - Anything for you

Joan Armatrading - The weakness in me. It's just sublime my heart aches.

This is one I sent to my eldest dd recently (not really her taste, but I like to think that the sentiment gets through sometimes - #deluded).

It's the acoustic version of Wings by Birdy.

Songs by Birdy constantly come up on my spotify playlist and there's not one that I haven't liked so far. She's only young too!

I was out for a walk and it came up on my list blasting in my ears and it just seemed so apt as I was thinking about her at the time.

Gracious by Ben Howard

'While You Were Sleeping' by Elvis Perkins.

His mother died aboard AA Flight 11 on 9/11.

lovelemoncurd · 20/01/2021 05:56

Art Garfunkel- Disney Girls

Reminds me of my teen years working in a restaurant in the Lake District. The owner used to play the album. It summed up those breezy times.

There goes my heart again - Gordon Haskell

For those who have lost love......

@TheRogueApostrophe

Also I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack. The lyrics are lovely and usually reduce me to tears.
Oh yes - love that one, and another Baez "forever young". I was at uni - around 1976/7 and went back to visit my old school as I was friends with one of my old teachers - she was taking the leavers assembly and played this, it floored me then and still does.

These were the days of our lives by Queen. My mum was a hug Freddie fan and it was played at both my Dad and Mums funeral. I choke up when it’s played.

Michael McDonald - I Can Let Go Now

FuzzyPuffling · 20/01/2021 10:44

Kirsty MacColl, "Wrong again" and Gabrielle "Out of Reach"
Both very relevant to a place I was at the time and still have the power to make me sad.

FuzzyPuffling · 20/01/2021 10:45

And angrymum yes to "At seventeen"

mrswhiplington · 20/01/2021 11:07

"Slipping through my fingers" by Abba. First heard the song in the film Mama Mia, about a young girl growing up. I cry every time, thinking about my DD.

Shikamiri · 20/01/2021 11:42

this from 1972 actually makes my heart hurt. He was 21 when he wrote it

CarrieMoonbeams · 20/01/2021 11:53

Another one here for Adagio for Strings. I first heard it when I was watching the programme about Versace's murder (Sad) and had to pause it to find out what the music was. Just beautiful.

The worst one for me though is Waiting For You, by Nick Cave. So much love and heartbreak in a really simple song. I'm a massive fan of his anyway, but I genuinely can't listen to that song without sobbing.

GabsAlot · 20/01/2021 12:01

oh queen who wants to live forever-of course its to do with the film and he outlives his wife but now i just think of freddie and how he isnt here anymore
