A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Yes to Softly as I leave You by Matt Monroe and in a similar vein, Stardust by Nat King Cole. They played it at my grandad's funeral and I can still see my dad sobbing. I'd never seen him cry before.

Sithee · 19/01/2021 22:13

OP I had the same experience with this song a few months ago when I heard it for the first time. Stopped me in my tracks and haunted me for weeks.

A few months before, I was listening to a Desert Island Discs podcast in the car and “Things Behind the Sun” by Nick Drake came on, also mentioned by KaptainKaveman upthread. I’d never heard it before, but it made my hair stand up and I had to pull over immediately to listen to it. Months later, it still takes my breath away every time I hear it.

Clare de lune - deBussy always makes me well up. My favourite piece of classical music ever, it’s just dreamy.

Aurea · 19/01/2021 22:26

Also love this piece. A haunting violin duet. Ashokan's Farewell.

FartAtTheMaddingCrowd · 19/01/2021 22:30

Lots of mine already men

nuitdesetoiles · 19/01/2021 22:32

Killing me softly. Roberta flack version

LegoAndLolDolls · 19/01/2021 22:32

All of me by John Legend.

I played it non stop during my sons appeal for his ehcp.

The words just fitted exactly how I felt. I had no idea ever that I could feel so strongly about something that basically made me put myself through hell by free choice for someone else. Anyway I won so happy ending.

Van Morrison Into The Mystic. Breaks my heart listening to this.

....already mentioned.
But mine are...
The Rose - Bette Midler
Give My Love To Rose - Johnny Cash
Turn Around - Nanci Griffiths
Flying Away - Eric Bogle

DD is going to uni after the summer and can't get through the last two without sobbing.

FartAtTheMaddingCrowd · 19/01/2021 22:34

Oh and pretty much any version of Danny Boy.

Pebbledashery · 19/01/2021 22:38

I have a bedtime playlist for DD and on it is Gary Barlow, forever love. Literally breaks my heart when I listen to it.

Another vote for Sandy Denny and Who Knows Where The Time Goes. She had a very sad life.

Flowers to all who are going through tough times and having difficult memories stirred up by this thread.

After I lost ds1 I had the most terrifying pregnancy with ds2. I couldn't relax at all. Forever Love came out the week ds2 was born... The day after he was born I lay in my hospital room with him in his crib next to me. I looked at him realised how lucky I was and sobbed. I hated the No 1 when he was born (Fujees Killing Me Softly) and always associate FL with ds2.. 💙 💙 💙

I love Diamonds and Rust! Just my Imagination- The Temptations Spiegel im spiegel - Arvo Part. A piano piece.
Yes to Spiegel im spiegel. This came on when I was listening to Classic FM in the car a few years ago and it stopped me on my tracks. It's a really beautiful piece of music. It takes me to another place when I hear it.
Aspiringmatriarch · 19/01/2021 22:48

I think most of mine have already been mentioned, but:
Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby by Cigarettes After Sex. I heard it when I was going through a difficult time a few years ago, was estranged from my dad at the time, and it made me sob. Although the actual lyrics are not father-daughter themed at all!
Hope There's Someone by Anthony and the Johnsons. What a voice. The words, the piano melody, the depth of it.
This Woman's Work by Kate Bush. Incredible song.

I always get emotional listening to Sinead O'Connor. Her voice is just so full of emotion! I remember listening to Nothing Compares on repeat after breaking up with my first love (such a cliché I know!)

Another one I love is Some Things Last a Long Time by Daniel Johnston. It's a lovely, simple song and he just sounds so vulnerable 😭

TheRogueApostrophe · 19/01/2021 22:51

Also I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack. The lyrics are lovely and usually reduce me to tears.

Badabingbadabum · 19/01/2021 22:53

Yes to Kate Bush, This Woman's Work.

Hurt covered by Johnny Cash. His voice just works with all the song lyrics and even though its not his song you hear how he feels each line he sings.

lachy · 19/01/2021 22:53

@Kbear

Tootie by Hootie and the Blowfish
one of my absolute favorites. I've never ever been tired of hearing it.
SymphonyofShadows · 19/01/2021 22:55

Haven’t read the whole thread but Kate Bush’s Under the Ivy chokes me, also the Johnny Cash version of In My Life. Weirdly, every other version leaves me cold including The Beatles.

The most recent one to kick me in the feels is The Dark is Rising, which I hadn’t heard before.

joystir59 · 19/01/2021 22:55

Sinead O'Connor Theology, the accoustic side, in particular "Something Beautiful" and "I don't know how to love him"

James -Leave a little light on. About his mother dying and its the video that gets me.
I watched it just after I lost my own mother and cried myself inside out.
