A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Early Morning Rain sung by Eva Cassidy is also a bit of a tear jerker for me!

paisley256 · 19/01/2021 21:12

Carole King - Way over yonder

Melange99 · 19/01/2021 21:14

@FireEngineGirl Can't listen to that Kate Bush song (This Woman's Work) in public. Tears like a fountain. Another one of hers gets me too, Moments of Pleasure.

nuitdesetoiles · 19/01/2021 21:15

The day before you came by "Abba" has a kind of empty bleak feel which is quite moving in a weird way.

Ne me quitte Pas both the Jacques Brel and the Dusty Springfield version... Both beautiful.

Pipandmum · 19/01/2021 21:16

Ferry Across the Mersey. I have no connection to Liverpool amd was a baby when the song was released but it is just such a beautiful piece of music and his voice goes straight to the heart.

nuitdesetoiles · 19/01/2021 21:18

Know it's cheesy but "half a world away" by oasis tugs at the heart strings a bit...

nuitdesetoiles · 19/01/2021 21:20

Plus "he was beautiful" Cleo lane... Song about a love that could never be... My mum used to sing this

Woman in love Barbara Streisand...an ode to bring rapturously giddily in love...cheesy video though with Barry Gibb!

SwanShaped · 19/01/2021 21:22

High Flying Bird by Judy Henske. It’s so sad. And her voice is beautiful.

TankGirl97 · 19/01/2021 21:23

This thread is amazing, I've signed up to Spotify just to get the playlist!
Probably mentioned already but I'd also add The Parting Glass by Cara Dillon.

TriflePudding · 19/01/2021 21:25

MyDcAreMarvel

I felt the same about A Womens Work when they used it in the handmaids tale

I frightened my DH when we watched this because it absolutely broke me, I was just sobbing at it ! It just cut me to the core- the realisation of just how little women and our role in society is valued, and how precarious our freedom is.

My DH has never seen me like that, he didn’t know what to do, I am normally fairly stoical!

Softly as you leave - Matt Monroe.
Had it at my mum’s funeral.
😢
I remember this song from a series on the 80s hosted by Dave Lee Travis. It was called Video Jukebox or something. The idea was old songs (pre-video) had videos made for them. This one was an old couple & he died, she dreamt of them as a young courting couple. I can still remember it so clearly, I well up whenever I hear it.
I also remember the video on this series to " The sun ain't going to shine anymore"

Stop your years by aldous Harding. The BVs on it stopped me in my tracks. I found out who sang them and became a big fan of him too.

Iamblossom · 19/01/2021 21:38

All I want is you - U2

CoodleMoodle · 19/01/2021 21:39

Warren Zevon - Keep Me In Your Heart

It was used in the last episode of House, and I liked it so I looked it up. He started recording the album it came from just after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and it was released just before he died. The song gets me every time.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 19/01/2021 21:43

How could I forget this one, Theme from Harry’s Game by Clannad.

thetinselbadge · 19/01/2021 21:45

Really enjoying the linked playlist and all the beautiful songs. Just had a teary moment to Brandi Carlile 'the mother'.

I'd suggest:
Chopin Nocturne no.2
The Chicks - Lullaby, used to cry happy tears to this holding my newborn
The Grass is Blue - Dolly Parton, love love love this one

Robbybobtail · 19/01/2021 21:45

Also, I’m sure someone must’ve already mentioned but “I will always love you” by Dolly Parton always makes me emotional.
She wrote it for her boss and mentor Porter Waggoner as a farewell song when she wanted to leave the country music show they were on together. He didn’t want her to leave so she went home and wrote the song to try to explain how she felt and why he had to let her go. I actually think the original meaning gives it more poignancy - saying goodbye to someone you love and respect and asking for their blessing.

He was so overcome with emotion (understandably!)he gave her his blessing and they remained great friends and she apparently sang it to him on his deathbed.

www.independent.ie/entertainment/music/scorn-not-his-simplicity-phil-coulter-reveals-the-heartbreak-anger-and-fear-behind-the-song-38566781.html

I am linking this introduction as some of the lyrics might seem offensive now. The man who wrote it, had a son with Down's syndrome. Some of you might have heard of Phil Coulter? The piece I've linked is behind a paywall, but you get the gist from the first few paragraphs - the lyrics are personal to the writer.

In any case, a man called Luke Kelly made it really famous. It never ever ever fails to make me cry as I feel so much for the innocent little child in the playground. The lyrics are so evocative. I hope you like it and don't find it offensive. It's possibly apt for anyone with a child who has additional needs.

I love this live version

This is the recorded version

ChocolateHelps · 19/01/2021 21:50

You do something to me by Paul Weller...sigh...always have to stop what I'm doing and just listen. Love it

OohKittens · 19/01/2021 21:52

The baby by Blake Shelton breaks my heart every time.

PloptheBarnOwl · 19/01/2021 21:54

There has just been released a "new old" song- David Bowie covering "Mother" by John Lennon. I had never really listened to the words before. Heartbreaking.

whataboutbob · 19/01/2021 21:56

@garlictwist

I'm afraid I can't abide Joan Baez. She is just too shrill.
I agree! And so self righteous. But I always felt it would be a bit mean saying it.

Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez took my breath away when I first heard it too. What an amazing woman and song!
