A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

I'm discovering lots of amazing songs from this thread and the Spotify playlist 😊

I discovered Matchbox20 when I was in my twenties and have listened since then. Rob Thomas and his band are amazing lyricists.
Hard to choose a favourite but i love When You're Gone....

The line .... 'Feels like your hand is on the door' sums up my relationship at the moment and that line runs through my head almost daily 😔

I also love Sunshine on A Rainy Day by Zoe for making me feel happy.

I second Caledonia by dougie maclean it reduces me to bits every time, especially just now.
I also second I hope you dance, i play this to my girls all the time.
My cringey one would be you're my best friend by Don Williams its the simplest love song and was my grannies party piece!

GabsAlot · 19/01/2021 23:03

@paisley256 my late mums fave singer and what a voice every song gives me goosebumps

AndreaMartel · 19/01/2021 23:07

@PeaceLoveAndCandy Jenni Murray on her last woman's hour talked about Joan Baez singing Diamonds and Rust for her in the studio as a highlight of her career. Quite moving.

PhoebeSnow · 19/01/2021 23:08

Who Knows Where The Time Goes; Sandy Denny’s voice, the words and music are sublime.

In The Ghetto and If I Can Dream . Elvis had such a beautiful voice and those two songs are make me cry.

Northern Sky by the tragic Nick Drake is wonderful and he was a such a pure soul.

Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell. Incredible, prefect song.

The Man With The Child In His Eyes, Under The Ivy , This Woman’s Work , You Want Alchemy all by Kate Bush and Don’t Give Up With Peter Gabriel

God Only Knows by The Beach Boys

nancypineapple · 19/01/2021 23:12

He ain't Heavy by the Hollies

I know its cheesy but I sob my way through Beaches and Bette belting out " Wind beneath My Wings"

PointlessUsername · 19/01/2021 23:12

With You - Caissie Levy

Slipping Through My Fingers - Abba

Kissing you - Des'ree

nancypineapple · 19/01/2021 23:13

Whole? I mean Who!

PhoebeSnow · 19/01/2021 23:13

@Sithee

*OP* I had the same experience with this song a few months ago when I heard it for the first time. Stopped me in my tracks and haunted me for weeks.

A few months before, I was listening to a Desert Island Discs podcast in the car and “Things Behind the Sun” by Nick Drake came on, also mentioned by KaptainKaveman upthread. I’d never heard it before, but it made my hair stand up and I had to pull over immediately to listen to it. Months later, it still takes my breath away every time I hear it.

Have you heard any more Nick Drake’s work? I envy anyone who hasn’t heard his beautiful songs , they have a treat in store.
Sue81 · 19/01/2021 23:15

I can't listen to I will Carry You (Audrey's song) by Selah without going to pieces - listened to it a lot when I miscarried. Sad but beautiful

Clawdy · 19/01/2021 23:16

Carole King - So Far Away. That line "It would be so fine to see your face at my door....." Think we all get a picture of someone in our minds at that line.

LazingOnASundayAfternoon · 19/01/2021 23:18

Coldplay - See you soon

TheLevyEyebrowsFancIub · 19/01/2021 23:19

Lana's latest I found captivating, just achingly beautiful and nostalgic. I know she's not everyone's cuppa Brew but her vocals are just ethereal for me.

Harpydragon · 19/01/2021 23:20

Into the mystic by Van Morrison makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

Smudgefell · 19/01/2021 23:22

Just thought of another one!
U2 and Pavarotti singing Miss Sarajevo. Just the bit where Pav comes in is so emotional and kind of takes my breath away every time.

johnstownflood · 19/01/2021 23:22

Lovin You by Minnie Riperton , especially sad as she died so young

Girlyracer · 19/01/2021 23:24

I love that song OP. Sorry haven't RFT, I'm sure she was singing about Bob Dylan.

I'm definitely musically sensitive, I hear slight key changes, music can be beautiful and make me cry and others look at me and think I'm daft. I don't think they hear what I do.

TheresOnlyOneWayOfLife · 19/01/2021 23:25

@Sillyduckseverywhere

Just Breathe by Pearl Jam Long live the queen by Frank Turner Both make me snot bubble
Both of these! Also Polaroid Picture by Frank Turner Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar makes me cry every time
quince2figs · 19/01/2021 23:25

Yet another vote for This Woman’s Work, Kate Bush. Reminds me of my late gran.

Hurt, Johnny Cash (especially the video. Pain etched on his face)

I can’t make you love me - Bonnie Raitt (although George Michael’s version also sublime)

Pretty much anything by the Carpenters. Her sadness so evident, despite sometimes cheery lyrics/music and the wonderful purity of Karen’s voice.

Again, I will Always Love You sung by Dolly Parton.

Christ, I’m welling up even typing these 😕

Girlyracer · 19/01/2021 23:27

John Williams, John Barry, Ennio Morricone and Hans Zimmer write some breathtaking music.

quince2figs · 19/01/2021 23:29

@peak2021

PhoebeSnow Yes! It led me down a wonderful Nick Drake rabbit hole that I never knew existed. It was a such a treat to discover his music. It makes me wonder what other hidden gems there are out there for me to discover!

Nettleskeins · 19/01/2021 23:33

Coldplay. God Put a Smile on Your Face.

TheProf · 19/01/2021 23:33

Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead makes me cry everytime and for some reason John Lennon - watching the wheels does too.
