A song that was written in 1974 just took my breath away, literally

I went out for a long walk and had Spotify making suggestions. This song came up, never heard it before, and it stopped me on my tracks. I had to slow down as I was crying. This song was written in 1974 and I am 50. How have I not come across this song before? The song by the way is Diamonds and Rust by Joan Baez. Has this happened to you and what was the song?

Everybody hurts - REM ( also love Losing my religion)
Take the weather with you - Crowded House. It just reaches into my soul somehow.
This years love - David Grey.
Winter kills - Yazoo. It was the b-side to Only you and I’ve always preferred it.
Say something ( I’m giving up on you) - A great big world.
In my life - The Beatles

Has anyone suggested Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" yet? Written after his son died.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 19/01/2021 20:43

@goldpendant
Not cringe at all.
Beautiful song.

Smudgefell · 19/01/2021 20:44

Cranes In The Sky by Solange also gets me, I’m not sure why!

Agree with PP about Death Cab and have to add that What Sarah Said is a great but sad song.

Also want to add Fade Into You by Mazzy Star and Lie In The Sound by Trespassers William.

I’ve just added Indiscriminate Acts of Kindess by Foy Vance, it makes me crumble every time

The streets of Edinburgh by the Proclaimers. Such a beautiful song about how your home town holds all your memories.

They Pass, They pass
They pass, they pass
The streets of Edinburgh
Hold half the world for me
In scores, in droves
The living and the ghosts
The streets of Edinburgh
Mean most to me

Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I shall still be dreaming
I do not count the time

For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?

Sad deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Oh, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I shall still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I have no thought of time

For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?

The original version of Who knows where the time goes is by the songwriter Sandy Denny.

Beautiful.

Also want to add Fade Into You by Mazzy Star

One of my favourites. I moved to a new place and after a while not having met many people that I had much in common with, I invited one of the mums from the nursery for a coffee. I had that playing and she said it was the moment she knew we would get on. Still best of friends even though we live further away from each other after 15 years. She made me a collection of mazzy star cds for my birthday once. It always makes me think of her and smile at our friendship

Odile13 · 19/01/2021 20:51

Vincent by Don McLean

I heard this as a child and couldn’t listen to it without balling my eyes out.

Smudgefell · 19/01/2021 20:54

Ahhhh @Breathmiller what a lovely memory! It’s such a beautiful song.

MossandRoy · 19/01/2021 20:54

'Ne me quitte pas' by Jacques Brel, heart wrenching
'Ohne Dich' and 'Mutter' both by Rammstein absolutely destroy me!
And 'Lonely Day' by System of a Down, oh my heart!!
They all came into my life at different, difficult times and I love them.

Smudgefell · 19/01/2021 20:56

And thank you so much @PoirotsMissLemon for making this thread into a playlist Smile

Beautiful.

Written when she was 17 ? Stunning how she knew so much so young
WarmSausageTea · 19/01/2021 20:57

Desperado has been mentioned, but try the Linda Ronstadt version, her voice is beautiful.

Ode to Boy by Yazoo.

Dolphins by Tim Buckley. Someone mentioned Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil (gorgeous), which he co-wrote.

Jesus to a Child by George Michael.

Stop Crying Your Heart Out. I loved the recent CIN version, also Leona Lewis performed it on the X Factor way back when, and it was stunning.

Winter by Tori Amos. Oh, and Silent All These Years.

So many more, but most have been mentioned already.

Mercy Now by Mary Gauthier.

SophocIestheFox · 19/01/2021 20:59

There are some proper tear jerking belters on here!

My offerings:

Line of Fire by Junip- for the times where you just have to let things go.

No Children by Mountain Goats, for painful divorces and breakups

Pyramid Song by Radiohead for general purpose mournfulness

The Way We Used to Love by Sivi Jakobsen for wondering why people don’t love you any more

No one will ever love you by Magnetic Fields for disappointment in love

Gawd, I better stop there, I’ve got hundreds I could list and now I’m bawling😭

paisley256 · 19/01/2021 20:59

Tothesea

Your choices are perfect.

PoirotsMissLemon · 19/01/2021 21:01

It’s my pleasure @Smudgefell! I love finding new music

TheVanguardSix · 19/01/2021 21:03

The Only Thing by Sufjan Stevens.

2:35 into the song is just glorious. I'll never forget the first time I heard it. The tears were there before I even realised it.

The song is about his mother, her death, their troubled past, his faith. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

TheVanguardSix · 19/01/2021 21:05

And also...

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. Beautiful.

Smudgefell · 19/01/2021 21:06

@FlemCandango it’s such a gorgeous song, I always thought it was written by Eva Cassidy. Hers is the only version I’d heard (until now!) but I still love it. I just love Eva Cassidy’s voice.

paisley256 · 19/01/2021 21:07

Barbra Streisand and kris Kristofferson - Lost inside of you from A Star is Born. Oh manic get chills just thinking of this one.

Also Barbra Streisand - Evergeeen. Perfection.

TheVanguardSix · 19/01/2021 21:07

And one more...

Dark Child by Marlon Williams.
What a tune. The guy's brilliant.

paisley256 · 19/01/2021 21:08

garlictwist · 19/01/2021 21:08

I'm afraid I can't abide Joan Baez. She is just too shrill.
